Ex Ayrshire shop worker 'not a fit and proper person' after drug supply conviction
A former shop worker from Kilwinning has had his personal licence revoked after being convicted of drugs offences.
Sgt David Markin of Ayrshire Licensing Department in Kilmarnock told Monday's meeting of North Ayrshire Licensing Board that Mandeep Dhaliwal had been convicted under the terms of the Licensing Scotland Act 2005.
The 36-year-old was convicted on February 13 at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 concerning the supply of a controlled drug, cannabis. The disposal at the time was a confiscation order of £7,510 and community payback order of unpaid work of 210 hours to be completed within a year.
At 10.40am on September 19 last year, police attended the accused's address in Kilwinning and were in possession of a search warrant.
Mr Dhaliwal was inside. A search was carried out for a quantity of green herbal material, and a quantity of cannabis weighing 885g and a quantity of cash worth £7510 were recovered along with a set of scales.
Some green herbal material was recovered and was found in preparation of individual deal bags. The value of the material recovered was given as £3,800.
Mr Dhaliwal, who used to work at the Premier store in Kilwinning Main Street, was sentenced on March 14 at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.
He told the Board: 'I regret what happened at that time. I was in a bad place myself. I have already paid for it by doing the community order.'
Cllr Christina Larsen said: "It is a serious offence and being a licence holder comes with responsibility. You have to be a fit and proper person and due to the conviction, I propose we revoke your licence for not being a fit and proper person.'
Her motion was seconded by cllr Ronnie Stalker and unanimously agreed by the board.

West Lothian shopkeeper bravely speaks out as meat cleaver robber is jailed
Abdul Manan, who owns the Premier store in Armadale, says his team are 'getting there' after a difficult few weeks. A West Lothian shop owner says he and his staff have found it 'hard' after an employee was threatened by a thug brandishing a meat cleaver last month. Abdul Manan, who owns the Premier store in Armadale, says his team are 'getting there' after a difficult few weeks in which one of his employees was pushed backwards by Greig Parker, who was holding a meat cleaver and demanding cash from the till. Parker, who was wearing a balaclava, was eventually traced and arrested by police. He pleaded guilty to several charges this week at Livingston Sheriff Court and was jailed for four years. Speaking to Edinburgh Live in wake of the armed robber being put behind bars, Abdul thanked the local community for their help and says people have been coming in to the shop to check on the wellbeing of staff after the terrifying incident. He said: 'It has been hard but we're getting there. I think he maybe should have got longer for what he did but I would say the police have been really good as it has been a quick turnaround. 'They worked on it very quickly and a lot of people tried to help out after it happened, there has been a lot of care. People still come and ask, especially now it has been in the news they have been asking if we're doing okay. 'Since it happened we're being a lot more careful and have been putting more staff on just in case something similar happens again. The staff member who was on is getting there and doing ok but is obviously still a little shaken up. 'Overall I'm happy he's behind bars and happy with the way police acted quickly and the community for helping so much.' Shortly after the attack on June 26, CCTV footage was uploaded to the store's Facebook account as they appealed for witnesses to come forward. A terrified member of staff could be seen opening the till as Parker brandished the bladed weapon and made off with a handful of notes. However, Parker's movements were captured on Ring doorbell footage and he was arrested by police at a friend's house. The 47-year-old admitted carrying out the robbery and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards his former partner before leaving her home in possession of a knife on February 10. He was also sentenced for offences including police assault and two counts of abusing retail staff.

Tragic Rachel Booth's life from husband and kids to confusing last sighting
Rachel Booth, 38, disappeared over the weekend, and after an extensive search, her body was sadly discovered in a lake. She leaves behind her three young children and husband A family has been torn apart and a community left reeling after mum-of-three Rachel Booth went missing and was later found dead in a lake. The 38-year-old vanished without a trace from the Barnton area of Cheshire on Saturday, July 19. Her last reported sighting was at Sandiway Garage on the A556 at 3.50am where she was captured on CCTV buying wine and milk following a 45-minute run. A search into her disappearance was launched, and Cheshire Police said they were "conducting enquiries in the local village of Oakmere, near Delamere Forest, and the surrounding area." Police initially thought she had travelled to Oakmere, Delamere, which is around eight miles away from Barnton. The police deployed underwater divers and sniffer dogs in a desperate bid to track down Rachel. Following extensive appeals and searches in the area for the mum, a body was recovered from a lake in Oakmere yesterday. After formal identification took place, it was tragically confirmed to be the body of Rachel. Her family are being supported by specialist officers from Cheshire Police and have asked "for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time". But what happened in the run-up to such a tragic turn of events? Rachel Booth: Body found in three-day search confirmed as missing mum of three Rachel Booth: Body found in tragic end to search for missing mum What do we know about Rachel Booth? Rachel was last seen by her family in the village of Barnton in Cheshire. On her Facebook page, it states she lives in Northwich, a market town in Cheshire. She is a mum to three boys, and tributes shared by locals say that she has a husband called Carl. She has been described as 5ft 9ins, of a slim build, with blonde hair. On Facebook, Rachel often shared photos with her loving family, from fun days out to time spent at home. In photos with her husband, they can be seen on holiday together, while another shows them on their wedding day, where they were accompanied by their three sons. What have locals said about Rachel? Staff and shoppers at a Premier store in Barnton, close to where Rachel lives, were reportedly shocked and upset by her disappearance. Shop worker Raj Kaur, 30, said: "She is a lovely clever lady - always coming in here for her parcels. She is very active and very nice - we all liked her." A mum in the area added: "I knew her from the school and she was always pleasant - she has three boys at the school." After it was confirmed that Rachel's body had been found in the lake, tributes poured in for the 38-year-old. One shared: "Thinking of the family and the boys at this very difficult time, I use to know Rachel and look after her first two boys in nursery, such a lovely lady, you will be sadly missed Rachel," reports Northwich Guardian. Another wrote: "So sorry for your loss. Rachel was a good friend when she was living in Worcester and I send all my condolences to the family and her boys whom I know she absolutely adored xx." "Heartbreaking news. My heart goes out to her family, especially her beautiful little boys," one more shared. "Not the news we all wanted. So very sad. My thoughts are with her family and particularly her three children," said another. Further tributes have been shared on social media. One wrote: "So so sad. I went to school with Rachel. Thinking of her family at this sad time xx." Another penned: "Beautiful inside and out. Very sad news. My thoughts are with Carl and their boys. Please be respectful and give the family & friends privacy at this devastating "Heartbreaking. I had the pleasure of working with Rachel at the VIN. Such a beautiful, clever young lady. My thoughts go out to her family xx," wrote another. Someone else shared: "Absolutely heartbreaking, I'm so sorry, you were beautiful inside and out Rachel, RIP." What happened to Rachel? There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding Rachel's tragic death, and a file is being prepared for the coroner. The details of what happened to Rachel are yet to be uncovered. However, during her disappearance, a staff member at the Shell petrol station revealed two details about Rachel's last sighting. Issac Carolan, 19, told The Sun: "I spoke to my colleague who had served her on Saturday morning. "She bought milk and wine and jogged from 45 minutes away." He added: "But it didn't seem weird, she didn't seem disturbed or flustered." In posts shared on Facebook, two people claimed they saw Rachel before she went missing. One witness claimed to have seen Rachel between 12:30am and 1:15am walking toward Crewe. The witness said on Facebook: "I did think what she was doing walking along them roads (sic). We even looked for a broken down car incase that was a factor." Another added: "Yeah it seemed quite a random part of the road to be thumbing a lift I wondered about a broken down car too, but didn't spot one anywhere." Someone else also took to Facebook to share their views on Rachel's disappearance, writing: "There are many reasons why she could have been jogging at 3.50am. It certainly doesn't add up that she vanished after purchasing those items after her visit to the garage. It's quite some distance too from her home, someone must have some footage of her jogging in the area that morning."

How one Australian state has responded to a synagogue arson attack
Victoria, Australia, is establishing an anti-hate task force, comprising the premier, police minister, and Melbourne mayor, to address violent protests and a rise in antisemitism. The formation of the task force follows an arson attack on a synagogue in East Melbourne, where 20 worshippers inside escaped unharmed. Police have arrested and charged a 34-year-old man in connection with the synagogue fire and are investigating whether the incident was an act of terrorism. The Victorian government is drafting new legislation to ban face masks, the display of terror symbols, and devices used by protesters to attach themselves to objects. Antisemitic incidents across Australia have escalated since October 2023, prompting the country to pass new anti-hate crime laws in February, including mandatory jail sentences for offences like giving a Nazi salute.
