Midday meal inspection in Ludhiana: Grains, grime and glaring gaps in the lunch line

Ludhiana: A surprise inspection by Punjab State Food Commission member Chetan Prakash Dhaliwal has uncovered hygiene lapses and storage issues at government schools, Anganwadi centres, and ration depots in the city, prompting immediate corrective orders and a renewed focus on food safety. Dhaliwal visited govt primary and high schools in Haibowal Kalan, Anganwadi centres in Joshi Nagar, and ration depots in Santosh Nagar, Pavitar Nagar, and Hakikat Nagar. During his inspection, he tasted meals personally, reviewed storage conditions, checked drinking water quality, and assessed overall cleanliness. At several schools, he found poorly stored food grains and detected excess Total dissolved solids (TDS) in drinking water — an indicator of unsafe consumption levels. He issued on-the-spot instructions to rectify the issues, including installing RO systems where necessary and conducting regular water quality checks. Dhaliwal also directed midday meal staff to wear head and hand coverings while cooking, and strictly follow the prescribed menu to ensure nutritional standards. He called for the inclusion of fresh vegetables and fruits in school meals and mandated biannual health check-ups for both students and midday meal workers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Losing Weight with These Barefoot Shoes – You Won't Believe It! He instructed officials to install complaint boxes and display the Commission's toll-free helpline (9876764545) at schools, Anganwadi centres, and ration shops to enable reporting of food quality issues. Earlier in the day, Dhaliwal chaired a meeting at the district administrative complex to review the implementation of welfare schemes including the Midday Meal Program, School Health Initiative, Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Fair Price Shops, Integrated Child Development Services, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, and the National Food Security Act. He stressed the importance of organic farming and warned of the health dangers associated with excessive pesticide and fertiliser use. Reaffirming the Food Commission's commitment to ensuring food security, he said the state must guarantee safe, nutritious food and clean water as a public health priority. "Strict action will be taken against future violations related to hygiene, storage, or food quality," Dhaliwal said.

Party wants others to get a chance, friends with Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann since 1992: Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal

Chandigarh: Following his resignation from the Punjab cabinet, AAP's Ajnala MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that he promptly submitted his resignation when chief minister called him for a meeting on Thursday morning, citing the party's decision to give others a chance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dhaliwal also asserted his long-standing friendship with Mann, dating back to 1992. Asked about the specific reason for his departure, Dhaliwal indicated, "The party high command can tell you better…I was told that someone else has to be given a chance and I submitted by resignation. My personal view is that Sanjeev Arora will do a better job with the NRI affairs department. I feel that all capable leaders of the party should get a chance to become a minister. I am not after ministerial portfolios. I will continue to be a faithful worker of the party. " Addressing questions about whether his style of functioning contributed to the previous changes in his portfolios before his eventual exit, Dhaliwal said, "The portfolios don't matter. I relentlessly worked for whatever charge was assigned to me. I can continue work for the state even without a cabinet berth. For me, welfare of Punjab is the priority. The party has 95 MLAs and others should also get a chance. The party will give a responsibility elsewhere in the organisation. " He elaborated on the sequence of events, "The chief minister called me on Thursday morning, and he informed me when I met him. The party high command must have taken the decision to give someone else a chance… I am still a close friend of CM Mann and I did not join politics because he is my friend. I joined AAP as it is the best platform to bring about a change. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I have no grouses as I did not come back from the US to become a minister. I did not take a single day off." Dhaliwal also highlighted his achievements during his ministerial tenure, stating, "My family lives in California. I gave up my US citizenship to come back for the sake of Punjab in 2013. The chief minister and the party gave me the opportunity to be a part of the govt for 3.5 years. In just one year, I managed to free 11,000 acres of common land in Punjab's villages, which was worth Rs 2,700 crore. I settled 4,000 disputes of the NRIs. I fought the last Lok Sabha election from Amritsar when the party asked me to do so." BOX Style will remain same: MLA Replaying to a question, AAP's Ajnala MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said, "My style will remain the same. Even an MLA can do a lot for the welfare of people and I will prove it." When further pressed about the reasons for his exit, Dhaliwal said, "The chief minister can tell you better." He also dismissed the notion of his removal being linked to his proximity to the CM, asserting, "I have been close to even Arvind Kejriwal. The CM has to see who is best suited for a cabinet portfolio. " MSID:: 122231009 413 |

‘Sardaar Ji 3' row: BJP backs Diljit, calls him ‘national asset, global ambassador of Indian culture'

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come out in support of singer-cum-actor Diljit Dosanjh, stating that the 'politics of targeting the actor should stop' and that the artist is a 'national asset and a global ambassador of Indian culture' Dosanjh's recent film 'Sardaar Ji 3' landed in controversy over the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding immediate and strict action against the actor, including 'cancellation of Dosanjh's citizenship'. The film released overseas Friday (June 27) but not in India. The film's producer, Gunbir Singh Sidhu, had told media that they decided not to release the film in India after the Pahalgam attack as they didn't want to hurt anyone's sentiments. He added that 40 per cent of the film's revenue is expected to be hit with this decision. Pakistan actress Aamir had also allegedly passed derogatory remarks against India's Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan, which too were condemned by Sidhu. In a series of posts on X, BJP national spokesperson R P Singh backed Dosanjh, calling the actor 'not just a celebrated artist… (but) a national asset and a global ambassador of Indian culture'. 'FWICE's call to revoke his Indian citizenship over an inadvertent and pre-incident film shoot is not only unfair but shockingly disproportionate. The film featuring a Pakistani actress was shot before the Pahalgam attack. If there is anguish, it can be expressed through a boycott or by urging that the film not be screened in India. But attacking Diljit's patriotism and demanding such an extreme step is simply irrational,' Singh said in a post. 'Just days before the Pahalgam incident, the Indian cricket team played a match against Pakistan. Did FWICE or others object then? TV news channels routinely invite Pakistani guests to boost TRPs. Should those anchors now relinquish their citizenship too? Let's not cheapen nationalism or weaponise patriotism. FWICE should reconsider its stance — such targeting of our own talent only weakens our moral standing,' the post added. Reacting to calls for a ban on the film, Punjab BJP's Culture Cell Convenor and Punjabi film actor Hobby Dhaliwal addressed a press conference at Chandigarh and extended full support to Dosanjh on behalf of the party. Dhaliwal said that Dosanjh is not just an artist, but a globally respected face of the Punjabi community. 'At a time of nation's fight against terrorism, attempts are being made to defame him with baseless allegations. This is unfortunate and condemnable,' he said. He clarified that the film in question was shot well before the Pahalgam terror attack incident, when cultural exchanges between both nations were not banned. The shoot was conducted within legal norms and involved several actors, not just Dosanjh. Dhaliwal expressed regret that certain elements are now demanding cancellation of the actor's citizenship and a ban on his films — 'a demand that is not only unjustified but politically motivated and entirely baseless', he said. 'Diljit is the son of this soil. Punjab stands with him — and India too,' Dhaliwal added. He emphasised that every citizen holds patriotic sentiments, but using that as a pretext to target a single artist was completely wrong.

Council supports hail resilience program — but no funding for it

A city-led hail resilience program received council's support on Tuesday, but local lawmakers stopped short of committing any funds toward it for the next four-year budget cycle. Article content The multi-pronged program was put forward earlier this month, in response to a notice of motion last year from Ward 5 Coun. Raj Dhaliwal, asking the city to consider reinstating the Resilient Rooftop Rebate Program that was discontinued in 2022. Article content Article content Article content Dhaliwal's motion came after his northeast ward was pummeled by a series of supercell hailstorms last August. The hail damaged roughly 60,000 homes in Calgary and generated more than $3 billion in insurance claims, making it Canada's costliest weather event of 2024. Article content Article content Administration also proposed conducting a hail equity impact analysis to examine how hail damage has impacted socioeconomic inequity in certain vulnerable neighbourhoods. Article content Article content Article content Nicole Newton, the city's natural environment and adaptation manager, told council the network would foster collaboration between governments and the different sectors that deal with hail, including the insurance, real estate and building industries. Article content '(It's about) bringing those all together and having the right conversations around where does each responsibility start and stop and where does it overlap,' Newton said. Article content 'We would look to other municipalities and try to figure out other areas in North America and see what fits best with all the players at the table, and ensure we're taking the right strides in terms of advocacy, education initiatives and maybe different incentive programs.' Article content The recommendations also included having Mayor Jyoti Gondek pen a letter to the provincial government to implement a provincial grant program to support low-income households with their hail damage-related costs. The letter would also advocate for changes to the Municipal Government Act, allowing for hail protection upgrades to be included in the city's Clean Energy Improvement Program.

Ex Ayrshire shop worker 'not a fit and proper person' after drug supply conviction

The 36-year-old was found with cannabis and cash worth £7510. A former shop worker from Kilwinning has had his personal licence revoked after being convicted of drugs offences. Sgt David Markin of Ayrshire Licensing Department in Kilmarnock told Monday's meeting of North Ayrshire Licensing Board that Mandeep Dhaliwal had been convicted under the terms of the Licensing Scotland Act 2005. ‌ The 36-year-old was convicted on February 13 at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 concerning the supply of a controlled drug, cannabis. The disposal at the time was a confiscation order of £7,510 and community payback order of unpaid work of 210 hours to be completed within a year. ‌ At 10.40am on September 19 last year, police attended the accused's address in Kilwinning and were in possession of a search warrant. Mr Dhaliwal was inside. A search was carried out for a quantity of green herbal material, and a quantity of cannabis weighing 885g and a quantity of cash worth £7510 were recovered along with a set of scales. Some green herbal material was recovered and was found in preparation of individual deal bags. The value of the material recovered was given as £3,800. Mr Dhaliwal, who used to work at the Premier store in Kilwinning Main Street, was sentenced on March 14 at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court. He told the Board: 'I regret what happened at that time. I was in a bad place myself. I have already paid for it by doing the community order.' Cllr Christina Larsen said: "It is a serious offence and being a licence holder comes with responsibility. You have to be a fit and proper person and due to the conviction, I propose we revoke your licence for not being a fit and proper person.' Her motion was seconded by cllr Ronnie Stalker and unanimously agreed by the board.
