Aurora is making its Edinburgh debut this August
This orchestra founded in 2005 by Principal Conductor, Nicholas Collon, memorise whole symphonies – sometimes an hour long and present music with theatrical elements to allow their audiences to get a better understanding of it.
This summer Aurora marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most influential and performed composers of the 20th century, with a deep-dive into his Fifth Symphony – a work born in the shadow of Stalin's regime that reveals music on the edge of life and death by a composer treading a dangerous line between political obedience and artistic defiance.
Aurora will make their long-awaited debut at the Edinburgh International Festival, with two performances, including one in the Festival's Beanbag Concert Series.
Shostakovich Inside Out (Monday 18 August, 2pm) invites audiences to learn more about the Fifth Symphony in a fresh and immersive way, through a conversational presentation led by Nicholas Collon as the orchestra play the symphony by memory, pausing to share insights and delve into its emotional depth and historical context.
Later the same day, Aurora performs the full symphony by memory, as part of a concert that also includes Abel Selacoe's cello concerto Four Spirits, with the composer himself and percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger as soloists (Monday 18 August, 7:30pm).
Made up of a roster of fearless musicians who have developed and grown with the orchestra, Aurora is the pioneer for memorised orchestral performance and has performed entire symphonies from memory at the BBC Proms and beyond for the last 11 years. They will play at BBC Proms on 16 and 17 August ahead of appearing in Edinburgh.
The Artistic Director and Co-Director, Concept and Script for Shostakovich's Fifth by Heart, Jane Mitchell, said: 'Shostakovich's 5th symphony was written under extraordinary circumstances and has been put under a magnifying glass since the moment it was first presented. The stories surrounding the symphony provide a fascinating lens through which to look at the role of artists in a totalitarian state. Our presentation of the 5th symphony will look at these stories alongside an exploration of the score itself, and will take a look at the endless ways in which we can interpret abstract music, throwing light on both the terrifying and farcical nature of a state attempting to control a composer's voice.'

Dua Lipa packs on the PDA with fiancé Callum Turner at BST Hyde Park after confirming their engagement and plans for children
Dua Lipa and her fiancé Callum Turner packed on the PDA as they enjoyed an outing to BST Hyde Park on Friday evening. The Houdini singer, 29, looked happier than ever as she boasted a big smile with actor Callum, 35. Dua and her man were snapped backstage at a VIP area of Hyde Park, as Neil Young was scheduled to perform. Appearing in a playful mood, the pair held hands while walking through the festival before they embraced for a hug. Visibly laughing, Callum could be seen squeezing the singer tightly before they shared a passionate kiss. Sporting a casual, festival-ready look, Dua stayed cool in the hot weather with a pair of denim shorts and a khaki tee. She completed her look with a Chanel handbag which hung off her shoulder. Callum opted for an all-white attire, wearing a white polo and chino trousers, while pairing them with a brown boot. Meanwhile, Dua last month revealed she would 'love' to have children with Callum after announcing their engagement. The singer, who turns 30 in August, publicly shared her excitement for the first time since the actor got down on one knee. The hitmaker posed for the front cover of British Vogue where she looked stunning in a pale pink bra that highlighted her jaw-dropping figure In the interview, Dua disussed her family plans, saying she's concerned how having children will fit in with her career as a pop star. 'I'd love to have kids one day,' she said. 'But it's like the constant question of when would there ever be a good time – how it would fit in with my job and how it would work if I went on tour, and how much time out I'd have to take. 'I think it's just one of those things that's going to happen when it happens. I love kids, but I think there's so much more to raising a child than just loving children.' Confirming their engagement, Dua said: 'Yeah we're engaged. It's very exciting. 'This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever — it's a really special feeling.' Speaking of their wedding plans, Dua said she hopes to finish her tour and Callum to wrap up filming before they tie the knot. While the wedding hasn't been at the forefront of her mind amid her busy schedule touring, she did admit she has started to think about her dress. She said: 'I want to finish my tour, Callum's shooting, so we're just enjoying this period. 'I've never been someone who's really thought about a wedding, or dreamt about what kind of bride I would be. All of a sudden, I'm like: "Oh, what would I wear?"'
