Leon Slater Wants Match With AJ Styles, ‘Had No Clue' About TNA Slammiversary Surprise
Slater won the X Division Championship at TNA Slammiversary. With the win, he also became the youngest title holder in TNA history. Slater spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about what the win meant to him, calling it a childhood dream.
'I've been training since I was nine. And I've always wanted to be X-Division Champion. And it's almost like one of them things, people tell you, 'Oh, when you get kids, you are going to love it. When you get married, it's going to be the best day of your life.' And you know it's going to be amazing. But it feels so far off sometimes that you can't picture it being real,' Slater said.
'But now it's finally here, it doesn't feel real,' he continued. 'Because I've been on the chase and now, I've got it, it's like, 'Oh! Well, where do we go from here?' So, it was… To keep it short and sweet, Slammiversary was the best day of my life. Couple days later, I'm still trying to recoup. I'm still trying to come down off that high. But, it feels great to finally accomplish what I've been striving after.'
Leon Slater reacts to AJ Styles' return to TNA at Slammiversary
Leon Slater was also shocked when AJ Styles made his way to the ring after his title win. Styles was advertised for Slammiversary in advance, but no one knew what he was doing on the show. This includes Slater, who had no clue the Phenomenal One was coming to the ring.
'1000% [AJ Styles appearing after my watch was a surprise to me] bruh. I think if I had known it ahead of time, I would have played it a lot cooler instead of jumping around like a little six-year-old,' Slater joked. 'But yeah, man, I had no clue.'
Slater grew up a TNA kid and AJ Styles was his favorite wrestler. He won the title, had Moose put him over after the match, and didn't think it could get any better. However, Styles' surprise appearance only added to his night.
'[I thought] 'Man, I don't know if it could get any better.' Then, I remember, I was on my knees looking at the belt, I was like, 'We did it, we did it, we did it.' And then, Get Ready to Fly hits, and I hopped onto my feet, and I was jumping around, I am running around, I'm losing my mind, just like everyone else in the building. Looking back on it, I'm really glad I had no clue. Because I think that genuine reaction, topped with what everyone else in the building was feeling. And yeah, AJ coming out was a huge surprise and it's something that I am never going to forget.'
Leon Slater on how much he knew heading into his match at Slammiversary
Slater confirmed that he didn't know anything about AJ Styles' appearance. He knew his family would be involved in the celebration, but he didn't know anything else, including Moose paying him respect and putting the belt around his waist.
'No. So, literally everything like all the… I suppose the drama and antics after the match was completely out there. The only thing that I knew that I was going to do was run to my family. Because obviously, they made the trip over from the UK and I feel like, with the story that we have told, family was a big part of it. So, I knew that the production team would want a shot with me and the fam,' Slater explained. 'So, I definitely knew I was going to run over to them and get that shot. But once we got past that point, I was walking through it blind, man. And it worked out for the best. So, I am super super grateful.'
As for what's next, Slater has a few opponents in mind. That also includes AJ Styles.
'…Any of them boys want to step up, I'm more than happy to take challenges from there,' Slater said. 'Or even if you think you are 'Phenomenal' and you want to step to the boy, I'm here for it too, man.'
During his speech at Slammiversary, Styles mentioned he would 'get back to' talking about another match in TNA once he addressed Slater. Pritchard pointed out that Styles didn't address it again that night, but Slater seemed keen to make it happen.
'Maybe so. Maybe so. I mean, the first X-Division Champion versus the youngest ever, definitely sounds pretty cool to me at least.'
Leon Slater's first official appearance as X Division Champion will take place on TNA's live broadcast of Impact! on Thursday night. TNA will be live from the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island on Thursday, along with a TV taping on Friday night.

Shedeur Sanders remained focused on rookie season with Browns during father's cancer battle
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Shedeur Sanders didn't have time to be sad while his father battled bladder cancer during the spring. Instead, Deion Sanders' message was clear and direct as his son prepared for his first NFL training camp after being drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns. Stay focused mentally. 'Dad, he's one person that he'll handle his, we handle what we've got to do. It was like, 'y'all need to focus on what y'all could focus on. Y'all can't sit here and feel sorry for me, and then that's affecting y'all doing that.' Shedeur Sanders said Monday. 'At the end of the day, you're all able to see and you're all able to understand everything on and off the field that I go through. So then you've got to be some type of human at some point in the way I'm doing everything and how I'm handling everything that's thrown at me. You've got no choice but to applaud that.' Monday marked Sanders' first time talking to reporters since his father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, announced on July 28 that doctors had removed his bladder to ward off an aggressive form of cancer. Shedeur was back on the field after missing Saturday's practice because of arm soreness. To say Shedeur Sanders has had an eventful first eight-plus months of 2025 would be an understatement. There was the hype about him being a possible first-round pick leading up to the NFL draft, followed by a well-publicized drop to the fifth round, where he was taken 144th overall by the Browns. The Browns are bringing along Sanders slowly, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett competing for the starting job. Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel has also received some first-team snaps. So far, Sanders hasn't taken any snaps with the first-team offense. He has faced the first-team defense a couple of times while taking snaps with the second- and third-team offenses. 'I view it as the defense does a great job of mixing players in. So (line)backers, you've got rookies out there. Sometimes DBs, you've got different guys out there,' he said. 'Truthfully, I don't care what O-line I go out there with. It could be ones, twos, threes, whatever the situation is. And I know Friday when the game is, if I'm with twos, if I'm with threes. It don't matter to me. I'm just ready to get down and get to doing what I could.' While Deion Sanders visited Shilo Sanders during the Buccaneers' training camp on July 23, the focus soon shifted to when Coach Prime would appear in Cleveland. Shedeur, however, asked his father to stay away because of the lack of snaps and the attention that would follow. 'I don't want him to come and see me get a couple of reps, and then he's cheering like a good dad. Like, 'nah, you can't be proud of me right now, I got to get to where I'm going,' I know there's a lot I've got to do to get there,' Sanders said. 'I just want everything that I'm doing to be focused on this time, and I don't want distractions. 'We know how everybody would take it, as taking away from the team, with my own dad showing up. It's a gift and a curse at the same time.' Coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees have not outlined how snaps will be divided for Wednesday's joint practice and Friday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Part of this uncertainty comes from Pickett and Gabriel both dealing with hamstring injuries. Both did individual drills on Monday. The recent trend throughout the league is for veteran players to receive most of the snaps in joint workouts, with rookies then playing in the preseason games. For Sanders and Gabriel, the games would be the best indicators to date on how they can adapt to things on the fly. 'You're (quarterback is) obviously not wearing a red jersey, so you're free game in those situations, whereas you're not in practice or a joint practice with another team,' Stefanski said. 'So I think those are all things that we weigh as coaches trying to figure out what our team needs for a given season, for a given week.' College football sleuths theorize which Tennessee QB tossed 'blurred' INT
College football social media teams face one major problem during fall camp. While it's easy to post a highlight of a star quarterback and receiver connecting on a deep touchdown during a scrimmage, posting defensive highlights can be a bit trickier. After all, how do you show off a nice defensive play without making the offense look bad? I don't know the answer to that question, but I do know that the Tennessee Volunteers found the funniest possible solution: If you post a video of a quarterback throwing an interception, just blur the quarterback so nobody knows who did it. And that's exactly what they did on Monday when they highlighted an interception from Colorado transfer defensive back Colton Hood. Tennessee's decision to blur the offending quarterback was especially noteworthy given the three-way quarterback competition the Vols are currently holding between Joey Aguilar, Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre after Nico Iamaleava's post-spring departure. And naturally, sleuthy college football fans immediately set off trying to identify which of the three contenders tossed the interception. So far, it seems no one has been able to arrive at a definitive answer, though On3's JD PicKell did offer an interesting theory: What if it wasn't thrown by a quarterback at all, but rather a graduate assistant or a different player in a non-contact jersey? Of course, fans immediately poked holes in that thesis by questioning why the Vols would have felt the need to blur the elusive passer if it wasn't one of the three players vying for the starting job. Also, as Dawgs Central's Graham Coffey points out, why not just edit the clip down to not include the quarterback? We may never truly get to the bottom of BlurGate, but Tennessee will hope that whoever ultimately wins the job this fall doesn't make a habit of giving the ball to the other team like this. Arion Carter's leadership with Tennessee football detailed
No. 18 Tennessee kicked off fall training camp on July 30. Rankings reflect the US LBM Coaches Poll. Following the Vols' third practice on Aug. 2, linebackers coach William Inge discussed Arion Carter entering his third season at Tennessee in 2025. 'I think that what you see, he's been probably consistent,' Inge said. 'It's still been the same scenario. When you come here in the morning, he'll be the first one here, you come here at night, he'll be the last one leaving, and now, I think from a leadership standpoint, what he's done has really turned into the player-led organization part of the program where he's making sure the rest of the guys are doing some of those same things. 'It's not just him dealing with the linebackers, but him also dealing with the secondary, the d-line, the o-line and just his communication that he has around the guys on the team. That's what you want when you take the next step in leadership. He's also doing the same thing. We talk all the time where, in order for you to be a dominant linebacker or dominant player that is known, it is about leadership and production, and he is producing on the field as well.' The 6-foot-1, 235-pound junior linebacker appeared in 21 games for the Vols from 2023-24. Carter totaled 85 tackles, including 37 solo and 48 assists, 7.5 tackles for a loss, one interception and eight pass deflections.
