Experian & HomeFree-USA Award $40,000 Scholarship to Fisk University Team for Solution to Bridging Credit Education Gap Among Young People

Yahoo05-03-2025
COSTA MESA, Calif., March 05, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A four-student team from Fisk University took the top prize in the #IYKYK Pitch Competition (If You Know, You Know) for their business idea to make financial literacy and credit education a rite of passage for young adults, sponsored by Experian and HomeFree-USA.
Nicknamed Team FinLit, Ansana Regmi, Destiny Marshall, Remilekun Ore and Sovit Lekhak earned a $40,000 scholarship for their proposal, "FinLit HQ." It's a personalized gaming experience for teenagers that helps them develop good financial habits and combat money dysmorphia. As they enter their early twenties, users move onto more advanced app-based credit education via gaming missions for real-world financial scenarios, such as buying books at college, renting an apartment, financing a car, and eventually purchasing a home. Because the proposed app would be integrated with Experian SmartMoney, Experian Boost and Experian Go, users would strengthen their real-life credit score as they play in preparation for making informed financial decisions as young adults.
"We realize there's a knowledge gap within the younger generation about credit. You don't give someone a car and ask them to drive on the road without any practice. You shouldn't push young people into the financial world without any education. One small mistake can impact you for years and that's why FinLitHQ is for users starting as young as 13," said Ansana Remi, a junior computer science major from Fisk University and captain of Team FinLit.
The #IYKYK Pitch Competition, powered by Experian's B.A.L.L. for Life initiative, challenged students to create a solution that makes financial literacy and credit education a rite of passage to young people coming of age, including those who are not part of the credit ecosystem. Credit invisibility – meaning without a credit report or credit score – affects 40% of consumers under 25 years of age. Credit invisibility disproportionately affects people of color: 28% of Black consumers, 26% of Hispanic consumers, compared to 16% of White and Asian consumers.
The competition was the culmination of the Experian Credit Academy created for the Center for Financial Advancement® (CFA). Five hundred students from 16 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) came together in live sessions with Experian credit education experts and self-paced modules. Finalists from Bowie State University and Talladega College also presented their ideas live at Experian's North America headquarters and each team received a $10,000 scholarship.
"We are thrilled to see students fully embrace the pitch competition challenge. Their deep connection bridging the gap in credit education knowledge, and passion for sharing what they're learning with their communities are inspiring. At Experian, our goal is to make credit education not only informative but also fun, exciting, and culturally relevant. Seeing the enthusiasm and dedication from these students reaffirms our commitment to this mission with HomeFree-USA and the Center for Financial Advancement," said Raudy Perez, Senior Director of External Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Partnerships for Experian North America.
"Education is designed for students, yet their voices can sometimes be missing from the process. Experian's #IYKYK Pitch Competition allows students to take what they've learned and apply it to real-life scenarios. Learning by doing is powerful, and in this experience, students deepen their understanding of credit and financial literacy by actively engaging with the material and sharing their knowledge with others," said LuWanna Williams, University Director for the Center of Financial Advancement™.
As part of its mission of financial inclusion and empowerment for all, Experian partners with HomeFree-USA to provide continuing education for its housing counselors and resources for their clients. The company created the Home Preservation Grant, which supported homeowners at risk of losing their homes due to COVID-related hardships with credit education and mortgage relief. The next wave of EV adoption is coming as leases roll off

A tax loophole that encouraged consumers to lease, rather than buy, electric vehicles in recent years means a flood of used EVs will be hitting the market soon. Why it matters: The expected wave of lease trade-ins will help fuel the next phase of EV adoption by giving price-conscious buyers more affordable choices. The big picture: There aren't many crystal balls in the auto industry, but lease returns are rather easy to predict. Since vehicles are typically leased for two or three years, companies already know when those cars will be turned back for resale. It's much harder to predict when customers will trade in cars that they purchased outright or financed. By the numbers: Nearly 1 million EVs were leased from the beginning of 2022 through the first quarter of 2025, according to Experian data analyzed by Cox Automotive. EV lease rates jumped from around 15% in 2022 to 67% by March 2025. Tesla, in particular, saw a spike in lease rates, per Cox. The industry's usual lease rate is about 25%. The surge had everything to do with a wrinkle in how the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act was written. Flashback: The IRA provided a variety of clean energy incentives, including consumer tax credits of up to $7,500 for EV purchases. Few vehicles qualified, however, because of strict sourcing rules designed to exclude cars made with batteries or components from China. A separate tax credit for businesses buying EVs for commercial fleets didn't have those same restrictions. The industry soon found a workaround: Leasing is considered a commercial sale because the vehicle owner is the bank or finance company, not the driver who "rents" the car for two or three years. That became known as the "leasing loophole" under the IRA — the bank received the tax credit from Uncle Sam, but typically passed it on to the consumer to lower their monthly lease payment. As a result, leasing soared in popularity. Fast-forward: Now, the first wave of those vehicles is arriving back at dealerships. Roughly 123,000 leased EVs (and plug-in hybrids) will return to the secondhand market this year, according to Recurrent Auto, a data firm that tracks the EV market. In 2026, the number will more than double to 329,000 EVs. By 2027, 650,000 leased EVs will be turned in. That's more than 1 million used EVs hitting the market in the next three years. Where it stands: Used EV sales — supported by a $4,000 federal tax credit — are projected to surpass 100,000 units in the second quarter, marking a new milestone, per Cox. Yes, but: That used-EV tax credit, like those for new EVs and the leasing loophole for commercial vehicles, is likely going away soon.

Potential Medicaid Cuts Demand Action, Here's How CIOs Can Step Up

WASHINGTON - APRIL 21: U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) (L) and Michigan Governor Jennifer ... More Granholm participate in a forum The Senate's approval of more than $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts over the next decade puts severe pressure on healthcare systems, and CIOs can't afford to stay in the background. With CMS and Medicaid budgets on the line, IT leaders must step up and collaborate with CFOs to streamline operations and maximize every dollar. CIOs must rethink the tech stack in both the front-end and back-end revenue cycle processes, where more innovative technology can deliver a real financial impact. Front End Revenue Cycle Incomplete and incorrect data collection at the front end of the revenue cycle process, such as pre-registration and patient registration, has a significant impact on the finances, leading to claim denials and errors in patient eligibility. According to the Experian State of Claims report, 67% of the patient data gap is in demographic information. CIOs need to automate identity verification, starting with third-party lookup databases or system integrations. While not a complete fix, it's a critical first step to reduce manual effort and improve efficiency. To strengthen the front-end revenue cycle, CIOs must deploy strategic solutions that ensure accurate patient identification and streamline financial workflows to enhance operational efficiency. This includes implementing strong identity verification at registration to prevent fraud and duplicates, automating eligibility checks and prior authorizations, and enabling secure, user-friendly digital payment options. Patients who lose Medicaid coverage often regain eligibility quickly—what disqualifies them this month might change by the next. Life situations change rapidly, and healthcare organizations must keep pace. By utilizing the tech stack to monitor and reassess eligibility in real-time, teams can help patients secure coverage as soon as they qualify again. This approach reduces unnecessary write-offs and recovers reimbursement for care that may become covered in the future. When CIOs prioritize data accuracy and automation from the start of the patient journey, they reduce claim denials, expedite collections, and enhance the patient's financial experience. Back End Revenue Cycle The push for autonomous medical coding has gained traction as a way to speed up claim submissions and reduce AR days. While these solutions support—rather than replace—medical coders, CIOs are also moving forward with Agentic AI to streamline operations and drive greater efficiency across the board. For example, after medical coding is completed, CIOs can implement an AI agent to perform a final review of each claim, checking it against the specific requirements of the insurance payer. If the claim meets all criteria, the agent automatically submits it. After the claim submission, if the payer rejects the claim, the agent identifies the denial reason code, pulls relevant claim and patient data, and corrects the issue. It also analyzes the root cause to prevent repeat errors. Over time, the Agentic AI learns from each interaction, continuously improving the accuracy of claim submissions. By orchestrating these intelligent, self-correcting workflows, CIOs can reduce denials, speed up reimbursements, and build a more resilient revenue cycle. CIOs can transform the healthcare revenue cycle by embedding Agentic AI into workflows that still rely on manual tasks. To ensure success, they must build strong partnerships across internal teams, such as IT and operations, as well as with external vendors. When applied strategically, automation and AI in the revenue cycle deliver measurable ROI and drive lasting efficiencies.
