Mission: Impossible composer Lalo Schifrin dies at 93, media reports say
Argentine musician Lalo Schifrin, composer of the memorable Mission: Impossible theme and the scores for dozens of Hollywood movies and TV shows, has died at age 93, media outlets have reported. Schifrin's son, William, confirmed his father's death, The Hollywood Reporter said. An agent for Schifrin did not immediately respond to an e-mail from Reuters. Born in Buenos Aires, Schifrin became a fan of American jazz in his teens. He was also a pianist and conductor. Schifrin received six Oscar nominations for movie scores that included the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke and The Amityville Horror in 1979. He won four Grammys, including one for the Mission: Impossible theme set to an unconventional 5/4 time signature. The song was written for the CBS television spy drama that debuted in 1966 and became a blockbuster film franchise still running today. Schifrin received an honorary Oscar for his lifetime of work in 2018. Clint Eastwood presented him with the award. Source: Reuters

1980s TV power couple spotted on Aran Islands ferry as iconic stars pose with staff
Today at 04:53 Eighties television royalty have been spotted in Galway this week as they hopped aboard a ferry headed for the Aran Islands. Famous US actors Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl were in the west of Ireland on Tuesday as the pair headed out to Inis Mór via Aran Island Ferries. Patrick, who is best known for his role as Bobby Ewing on iconic TV drama Dallas, and Linda, who gained fame for her part as Fonzie's girlfriend in Happy Days, posed alongside ferry staff who welcomed them onboard. The famous couple, who have been together since 2020, looked delighted to be there despite the grey skies as they beamed alongside staff. Sharing a snap of the moment on social media, starstruck staff captioned the photo, 'Welcome to Inis Mór Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl!' Patrick and Linda's love story began under lockdown over four years ago. Duffy was married to ballet dancer Carlyn Rosser from 1974 until her death in 2017. After Rosser's death, the actor wasn't sure he would find love again — until he reconnected with Purl. Purl and Duffy were casual friends years ago but subsequently lost touch. However, it was the COVID-19 pandemic that brought them back together after being in the same group text chain. Their love blossomed over subsequent video calls. Duffy would read poems to Purl over Zoom and one night he professed his love to the actress as they said their goodbyes. He explained, 'One night, as we were signing off, I said, 'Sleep tight, I love you.' I pushed the off button and went, 'Oh my god. I said the L-word!'' The couple have since collaborated to create their very own sourdough starter company, Duffy's Dough, born out of the same wild Alaskan sourdough starter that's been part of Patrick's family for generations. Patrick, whose grandfather emigrated from Ireland to America in the 1920s, visited Ireland in the summer of 2022 with Linda, to trace his own Irish roots in Kilmovee, Co Mayo. Fittingly, Patrick was born on the global day of Irish celebration on March 17, and throughout his life he has always maintained a deep pride and interest in his Irish heritage. Born in Townsend, Montana, in 1949, the son of tavern owners Marie and Terence Duffy, Patrick got his big break in 'Man From Atlantis' before achieving global success playing Bobby Ewing in the much-loved CBS prime time American soap opera Dallas. In 2023 he had the honour of being the grand marshal at Dublin's St Patrick's Day parade. Speaking at the time, Patrick Duffy said: 'Nothing gives me more pride than being asked to be guest of honour at this year's St Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin. 'I can feel my grandfather's joy in my returning to his homeland to represent the Duffys and express our gratitude for all this great country has given us. I feel like I am returning home and want to meet my extended family.'

Everything you need to know ahead of Dua Lipa's Aviva show
Dua Lipa is bringing her Radical Optimism tour to Dublin, as she plays a sold-out show in the Aviva Stadium. The English/Albanian singer will be heading to the Aviva on Friday (June 27) to kick off a huge weekend of concerts at the stadium, with over 50,000 people expected to attend. Doors to the show open at 5pm, with the support acts set to come on from around 6pm. The DART will be the easiest way to get to the Aviva, with a stop just minutes from the stadium. Pic: Sam Boal / There are several ways to get to the Aviva Stadium for the gig, with organisers saying that traffic and parking delays are inevitable — meaning that it's important that you plan accordingly. DART: The DART is the easiest way to get straight to the Aviva, with Landsdowne Road train station being less than a minute's walk from the stadium's southern end. Large crowds will be expected, though, so plan accordingly. There are also extra DART services running on the night of the show. LUAS: The LUAS is another way to get there, with the green line serving south Dublin. However, it's a tidy step from most of the stops on the green line. Speaking from experience, you'll get there in about 30-40 minutes if you get off at Charlemont, so it's best to bring the walking shoes if you're heading via LUAS. BUS: The following Dublin Bus routes will be operating a full service near the Aviva stadium: 4, 7, 7a, 39a, 145 and 155. CAR: If you really want to drive, there will be no car parking at the stadium for security reasons. There are car parks around the city, such as Q-Park, but spaces will be limited. Dua will be performing from her new album as well as the classics. Pic: David Fisher/Shutterstock Going off her previous tracks on earlier shows, this is Dua Lipa's expected setlist (SPOILERS!)
