Village Roadshow's $417.5 Million Stalking Horse Deal Approved

Bloomberg22-04-2025
Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, the bankrupt production house behind The Matrix trilogy, won court approval to sell the rights to its film library to Alcon Media Group for $417.5 million, a deal that's still subject to better offers at a potential auction next month.
Judge Thomas M. Horan approved the bankrupt company's stalking horse deal with Alcon, which will set a price for Village Roadshow's film library, according to a filing Tuesday. Alcon bested an earlier offer from Los Angeles-based investment firm Content Partners, though Content could still bid on the film library.

Romance or fauxmance: Are these cozy movie co-stars actually dating?

Is it true love — or simply a fauxmance? Rumored Hollywood relationships between co-stars have tantalized fans and juiced up the box office for decades. From Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney going on fake 'dates' in the 1940s (photo ops set up by p.r.) to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt hitting it off on the set of 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' (the very real start of a future disaster), the question of whether on screen chemistry is real or just acting is a staple of Tinseltown. In 2025, celebs are still fueling rampant speculation about their status — whether legit or choreographed. They're being touchy on red carpets, flirting during interviews and getting caught by paparazzi at cozy dinners. But which are the genuine article and which are fake? Pamela Anderson & Liam Neeson Their movie: '' Evidence for: Nobody saw this one coming. The 58-year-old star of 'Baywatch' and the 73-year-old Oscar-nominated actor from 'Schindler's List' have been giggling like schoolgirls on every headline-making step of their film's press tour. Neeson got tongues wagging when he said he's 'madly in love' with his co-star in a fall interview with People. At the film's premiere, Anderson gave him a big kiss on the cheek, and they sweetly posed together with their respective sons. When asked on the 'Today' show if they're an item, Anderson coyly shot back: 'I don't understand the question.' Multiple outlets have said they are, indeed. 'What is happening? Even they may not know,' a source told Page Six. 'They are figuring things out along the way. It's fun to watch.' Evidence against: Since Neeson's wife, actress Natasha Richardson, died in 2009, he's only been in one reported relationship — with p.r. exec Freya St. Johnston. That ended in 2012. And in October of last year, the Irish actor went so far as to close the book on ever dating again. 'No, in a word,' he told People. 'I'm past all that.' But, hey, one interview is not a binding contract. Ana de Armas & Tom Cruise Their movie: 'Deeper,' out next year Evidence for: Getting together with co-stars comes as naturally to Cruise, 63, as hanging onto a midair biplane or scaling the Burj Khalifa. Here's a sample of his resume: Rebecca De Mornay ('Risky Business'), Nicole Kidman ('Days of Thunder') and Penélope Cruz ('Vanilla Sky'). Could de Armas be next? Earlier this year, Cruise was seen having dinner with the 'Blonde' Oscar nominee in London, and he took her on a helicopter flight. 'Their romance is definitely on the down low,' a source told Us Weekly. They took in an Oasis concert and this week the duo was photographed holding hands in Vermont, where de Armas owns a house. Sounds like somebody's getting ready to jump on Oprah's couch. Evidence against: Rumors swirled in November that de Armas was getting close to Manuel Anido Cuesta, the stepson of the president of Cuba, after they were seen together in Madrid. And, of course, there is that pesky 21-year age gap. But that's far from an impossible mission for ageless Agent Ethan Hunt. Pedro Pascal & Vanessa Kirby Their movie: '' Evidence for: Reed Richards and Sue Storm have been all over each other. The Invisible Woman was hardly transparent when she stroked Mr. Fantastic's face during a TV interview. And onstage, Pascal, 50, stretched to grab the arm of Kirby, 37. The British actress from 'Mission: Impossible' and 'The Crown' says the handsiness, which has confused some onlookers, is a result of actorly worries. 'What happened is we were both incredibly nervous going out in front of thousands of people who love this comic,' she told Vanity Fair of their Comic-Con appearance. 'He wanted me to know that we were in this together, and I found it a lovely gesture and was very glad to squeeze his hand back.' Evidence against: While the baby in 'First Steps' is a fictional character, Kirby is actually pregnant. She's engaged to her American partner Paul Rabil, president of the Premier Lacrosse League. Scarlett Johansson & Jonathan Bailey Their movie: '' Evidence for: In June, the British 'Wicked' heartthrob, 37, and 'Black Widow' star, 40, gave each other smooches on the lips in full view of flashing cameras at the New York and London premieres of their dino blockbuster. The PDAs drove fans wilder than if they'd spotted a T. Rex. 'We're friendly people,' Johansson told 'Today.' 'I've got a lot of love to give. What can I say?' And Bailey defended the mouth-to-mouth salutation to 'Access Hollywood.' 'Life's too short not to be able to show your friends the true love,' the 'Bridgerton' star said. 'Embrace kissing the friends, I say!' Evidence against: Well, Bailey is openly gay, which could make this theory go quickly extinct. And Johansson is married to 'SNL' actor Colin Jost, with whom she has a son. That's another comet headed toward our fan fantasy. However, as Jeff Goldblum's Dr. Ian Malcolm once said, 'Life finds a way.' Glen Powell & Sydney Sweeney Their movie: 'Anyone But You' Evidence for: This duo is about as old-Hollywood as it gets. Back in 2023, Sweeney and Powell were at the peak of their powers. During the rollout of the spicy rom-com 'Anyone But You,' Powell had already emerged as one of the hottest new movie stars after the mega-hit 'Top Gun: Maverick' and the well-received 'Hit Man.' And Sweeney's fame had also exploded in the wake of HBO's 'Euphoria' and 'The White Lotus.' Then, shirtless and bikini-clad snaps from the tropical set caused cheating rumors, which both denied. But the flames were fanned further when Powell's girlfriend Gigi Paris broke up with him over the fracas. 'I was shattered,' she later told the 'Too Much' podcast, calling it 'a p.r. scheme at the expense of our relationship.' And Sweeney, 27, who was engaged to producer Jonathan Davino, played it up. 'It's a rom-com. That's what people want! Glen and I don't really care,' she said to Variety. The storm died down, and then this spring a newly single Sweeney heated chatter up again when she attended Powell's sister's wedding in Texas. 'Anyone But You' grossed $220 million. Hollywood pros have been jonesing for a similar dream situation to fuel their own films, sources told The Post. Evidence against: Sweeney and Powell have always maintained that their on-screen chemistry comes from their great platonic friendship. And last week, Sweeney was spotted vacationing at a lake in Idaho, and riding a Jet Ski with an unidentified smiling hunk. Zoe Kravitz & Austin Butler Their movie: 'Caught Stealing,' out in August Evidence for: Not only do Kravitz, 36, and Butler, 33, play love interests in a new thriller set in New York — they've both had recent breakups. Kravitz split from fiancé Channing Tatum and the 'Elvis' star called it quits with Kaia Gerber. The whispers began after they were photographed filming a kissing scene. Could they have been overcome by a hunka hunka burning love? A source told the Sun, 'Austin and Zoe have been spending time together over the past few weeks.' And this month, Page Six reported the duo took in the show 'Violet's Room' in Hudson Yards with director Darren Aronofsky and were seen 'heading out into the night afterward.' Evidence against: Sources told TMZ Kravitz and Butler won't be 'Caught' in a relationship with each other. And back in March, Kravitz had dinner with 'To All The Boys I Loved Before' actor Noah Centineo. Solve the daily Crossword

Jimmy Kimmel Stands Up for Stephen Colbert with an Emmys Billboard Ad

"I'm voting Stephen," the billboard read in reference to the ongoing Emmy votingNEED TO KNOW Jimmy Kimmel is sticking up for Stephen Colbert amid Paramount/CBS' decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Jon Stewart, Seth Meyers, and more have previously come to Colbert's defense The network is facing allegations of political censorship due to Colbert's criticisms of President Trump's administrationJimmy Kimmel is standing up for Stephen Colbert amid the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Kimmel, 57, appeared on a billboard ad in Los Angeles encouraging Emmy voters to vote for Colbert, 61. The billboard features a headshot of Kimmel beside an announcement of his own Emmy nomination for Outstanding Talk Series. In large white text below, the billboard read, "I'm voting Stephen." Variety was first to report the news. The billboard comes amid Paramount's decision to cancel Colbert after 10 seasons. In a statement from CBS previously shared with PEOPLE, the network said, "This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount." Colbert took over the show in September 2015 following David Letterman's departure. The cancellation came days after Colbert openly criticized the network's parent company for its sizable settlement with President Donald Trump. Following the network's announcement to cancel the popular program on July 17, several late-night hosts have shown solidarity for Colbert, including Kimmel and Jon Stewart, who hosts The Daily Show. Immediately following the cancellation news, Kimmel shared a clip of Colbert from the July 17 broadcast. "Love you Stephen," Kimmel wrote. He also called out the network behind the decision. "F--- you and all your Sheldons CBS," Kimmel added. In a fiery statement on July 22, Stewart, 62, said, 'If you're trying to figure out why Stephen's show is ending, I don't think the answer can be found in some smoking gun email or phone call from Trump to CBS executives or in CBS' QuickBooks spreadsheets on the financial health of late night." He continued, "I think the answer is in the fear and pre-compliance that is gripping all of America's institutions at this very moment, institutions that have chosen not to fight the vengeful and vindictive actions of our pubic hair doodling Commander in Chief. This is not the moment to give in." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Seth Meyers weighed in too. 'For as great a comedian and host he is, Stephen Colbert is an even better person,' he wrote in a post on his Instagram Stories. 'I'm going to miss having him on TV every night but I'm excited he can no longer use the excuse that he's 'too busy to hang out' with me.' Members of the Television Academy have until Aug. 27 to cast their votes. Read the original article on People

How Sixteen Candles ' Jami Gertz Became the Richest Woman in Hollywood

Originally appeared on E! Online Few can hold a candle to Jami Gertz's evolution."I get it," the Sixteen Candles alum told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. "It's not your everyday Hollywood actress tale."It's a tale that saw Gertz transition from an '80s film and television star to the owner of an NBA team she purchased with her billionaire husband Tony actress was discovered at age 16 when she attended a talent search and landed a role on the early '80s sitcom Square Pegs costarring Sarah Jessica Parker."I was found at a search, thrown right in, that was it," the 59-year-old recalled on a 2024 episode of Resilience with Richard Cabral, "and I never looked back. It was an usual path."Unusual, but lucrative. "When I was 16, I made more money than my dad," she continued. "That changes the dynamic. That changes a lot of things in your life." More from E! And her personal life did too when she crossed paths with Ressler in Gertz recalled to The Hollywood Reporter, the two were introduced through her publicist and hung out at a dinner party at Ressler's L.A. apartment. And while the businessman didn't know Gertz from her roles, he did know that he wanted to get to spend more time with her."Everyone thinks I married a rich guy," Gertz continued. "But I made more money—way more money—than Tony when I met him. I paid for our first house. I paid for our first vacation. I married him because I fell in love with him." They wed in 1989 and continued to make power moves throughout the '90s and early 2000s. For Gertz, this included starring in movies like Jersey Girl, Twister and Gilda Radner: It's Always Something as well as TV shows like Sibs, Still Standing and Ally McBeal—earning an Emmy nomination for her guest role in the latter. As for Ressler, he cofounded Apollo Management in 1990 before launching Ares Management seven years later. Forbes' latest estimates place his net worth around $13.8 these weren't their only new ventures. The couple also entered parenthood—they're mom and dad to sons Oliver, Nicholas and Theo—and Gertz opened her own production company Lime Orchard Productions in 2007. Though the company achieved success through the release of its movie A Better Life—a film that earned Demián Bichir an Oscar nomination in 2012—Gertz has admitted it wasn't a profitable business. Fast-forward to 2015 and Gertz and Ressler entered a new arena—literally—by becoming the owners of the NBA team the Atlanta Hawks, a purchase that, per The Hollywood Reporter, cost $720 million."I was walking in and out of the closet,' Gertz recalled to the publication, noting the space was where Ressler negotiated the deal. "And he looked at me, and I looked at him, and he's like, 'Jami, are we going to do this?' I'm like, 'I don't know. I'm so scared.' And he's like, 'It would be so much fun!' And then we were jumping and screaming, 'Oh my God — we just bought a basketball team!'"While her role as team owner has kept her plenty busy, Gertz has still made time for acting—though her most recent roles including parts in 2017's Difficult People and 2022's I Want You Back. However, she seems content living a more private life.'It just seemed like a natural moment for me to take a break from acting,' Gertz told The Hollywood Reporter. 'It's hard to even say it out loud because I love what I do. It's given me so many beautiful things in my life, taught me so many things about myself and the world around me.'To see more child stars then and now, keep reading.
