11-day K-culture festival to be held in Kuala Lumpur
Co-hosted by the Korean Embassy in Malaysia and Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the 11-day event is a celebration of Korea's expanding cultural presence, curated under the theme 'Feel the Vibes, Savor the Flavors, and Explore with Style!'
First launched in Terengganu last year, the festival returns with expanded programming that reflects Korea's deepening ties with Malaysia following the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Tuesday.
The lineup includes a halal hanwoo cooking show with Michelin-starred chef Son Jong-won, a Korea tourism roadshow from Wednesday to Sunday involving over 100 travel agencies, and K-beauty classes hosted by leading makeup artists from June 17 to 19. Performances by choreographer Lia Kim and The Painters, along with cultural booths at major malls, will further engage local audiences.
On June 21, a Korean speech contest hosted by the Korean Education Center invites Korean language learners of all ages to showcase their skills, while the grand finale, the 2025 ROUND in Malaysia, will present musicians from 10 Asian countries including Paul Kim, Touched, Dragon Pony and Malaysian girl group DOLLA from June 21 to 22.
The festival also sets the stage for the opening of the Korean Cultural Center in Malaysia in 2026, underscoring Korea's commitment to long-term cultural diplomacy in the ASEAN region, the Culture Ministry said.

Black comedy becomes first Korean title in Golden Lion race since 2012's 'Pieta' Director Park Chan-wook's upcoming feature "No Other Choice" has been selected for the main competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, festival organizers announced Tuesday evening during a livestream unveiling the official lineup. An adaptation of Donald Westlake's 1996 novel "The Ax," "No Other Choice" follows a laid-off middle-aged man who begins eliminating rival job candidates to secure employment and support his family. Lee Byung-hun stars alongside Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, Cha Seung-won and Yoo Yeon-seok. The film marks the first Korean entry to compete for the Golden Lion since Kim Ki-duk's "Pieta" won the top prize in 2012. It is produced by CJ ENM and is set for domestic release in September. Park last appeared in the Venice competition with "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" in 2005. The director had reportedly spent 17 years developing the screenplay for "No Other Choice" before wrapping production in January. Also in this year's competition is Yorgos Lanthimos's "Bugonia," an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 cult classic, "Save the Green Planet." The genre hybrid stars Emma Stone and is co-produced by CJ ENM. The 2025 Venice Film Festival runs Aug. 27-Sept. 6. Other titles in the competition include Kathryn Bigelow's "A House of Dynamite," Noah Baumbach's "Jay Kelly" starring George Clooney, and Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" with Oscar Isaac.

Two Korean titles join Toronto film fest lineup
Yeon Sang-ho's 'The Ugly,' Lee Hwan's 'Project Y,' starring Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo, bring total number of Korean films at Toronto to three South Korean films "The Ugly" and "Project Y" have been selected for the Special Presentations section at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, distributor Plus M Entertainment said Tuesday. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho ("Train to Busan," "Hellbound"), "The Ugly" is adapted from Yeon's 2018 graphic novel of the same name. The mystery thriller follows a blind seal engraving artisan and his son as they investigate the disappearance of their wife and mother. Kwon Hae-hyo plays the blind craftsman, while Park Jung-min takes on dual roles as both the younger version of the father and the son. The film is set to make its world premiere in Toronto ahead of its theatrical release in Korea, set for September. "Project Y," directed by Lee Hwan ("Young Adult Matters," "Park Hwa-young"), will also debut at the festival. The film centers on two women ― played by Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo ― who plot a heist in a bid to escape their circumstances. A domestic release is planned following the premiere, though a specific date has yet to be announced. These selections bring the total number of Korean films at this year's festival to three. Netflix's "Good News," directed by Byun Sung-hyun ("Kingmaker," "Kill Boksoon"), was earlier announced as part of the Special Presentations lineup. Set in the 1970s, the film follows a covert mission to land a hijacked airplane and stars Sul Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung and Ryoo Seung-bum. TIFF's Special Presentations section showcases anticipated titles that blend artistic vision with broad commercial appeal. Previous Korean entries included "Decision to Leave," "The Handmaiden" and "The Age of Shadows." Running Sept. 4-14, this year's festival will open with Colin Hanks' documentary "John Candy: I Like Me" and close with Canadian director Anne Emond's "Peak Everything." Other world premieres include works from Aziz Ansari, Guillermo del Toro, Rian Johnson and Scarlett Johansson, who is making her directorial debut with "Eleanor the Great."

SM's virtual artist Naevis to drop new track
11 months after debut track 'Done,' Naevis returns with new track K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment's first virtual artist Naevis is gearing up for a return. Naevis will release her second single 'Sensitive' on Aug. 7 at noon. The new track comes approximately 11 months after her debut song 'Done,' which was released in September. According to SM Entertainment, 'Sensitive' is a pop dance track featuring a groovy, funk-infused bassline and soft, rhythmic vocals with a diverse structure and dynamic sound. The lyrics convey Naevis' emotional journey as she moves from the digital world to the real world for the first time. Naevis was first introduced as a central character of labelmate aespa's concept. While aespa members travel back and forth between the real and virtual worlds, Naevis supports both the real-life aespa members and their avatars, ae-aespa. Naevis performed "Done" ahead of its release during aespa's second world tour "Synk: Parallel Line" in June 2024. Her upcoming release 'Sensitive' was also prereleased during SM's joint concert 'The Culture, The Live' in January.
