
Fatal Xiaomi SU7 crash doesn't slow China's smart driving battle for car market supremacy
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) help with tasks ranging from cruise control to parking and collision avoidance, with the ultimate aim being a fully self-driving car.
Automakers are pouring investment into their development, especially in the world's biggest car market China, which skews young and tech-savvy.
'Ten years ago, only 15 per cent of customers said they would change car because of an intelligent cockpit — today it's 54 per cent,' Giovanni Lanfranchi of EV firm Zeekr said.
Almost 60 per cent of cars sold in China last year had level-two ADAS features — where the driver is still in control but there is continuous assistance — or above, according to an AlixPartners report released last week.
The features 'are emerging as a key competitive tool', said the consultancy's Yvette Zhang.
Some firms use their own proprietary technology, like start-up Xpeng and consumer electronics-turned-car company Xiaomi, while others are cooperating with tech giants such as Huawei.
Such software is being developed in Europe and North America too.
But in a survey of hundreds of global auto executives surveyed by AlixPartners, two-thirds said they believed China led the world in the field.
'The collection and processing of data, and the availability of software and machine-learning talent' is difficult to replicate, the report said.
The technology is not immune from the price wars that are a key feature of the Chinese market.
In February, domestic EV giant BYD announced it would release its 'God's Eye' driving system on nearly all its cars, including on some models priced below US$10,000 (RM43,704).

Over-promising?
Then came a fatal accident in March involving a Xiaomi SU7 that had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed.
The accident, in which three college students died, raised concerns over safety and the advertising of cars as being capable of 'autonomous driving'.
The issue is an industry-wide one — Tesla's US-released 'Full Self-Driving' capability, for example, is still meant to be used under driver supervision.
'The price war has just been so brutal, companies are desperate to find any way to set themselves apart,' said Tom Nunlist, associate director for tech and data policy at Trivium China.
'So the question is have they been over-promising on features and releasing things as quickly as possible, for the purposes of fighting this commercial battle.'
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology seems to share those concerns.
After the crash, it held a meeting with leading automakers and other key players in which it made clear that safety rules would be more tightly enforced.
It warned automakers to test systems rigorously, 'define system functional boundaries... and refrain from exaggerated or false advertising'.
Reports said it will also crack down on the practice of improving ADAS via remote software updates.

'Sharp U-turn'
As the massive industry show Auto Shanghai kicked off last week, the shift in gear was obvious.
'In a sharp U-turn from just two months ago, carmakers have taken a low profile in terms of autonomous driving functions, but are emphasising safety instead,' said UBS' Paul Gong in a note.
'Safety is the ultimate premium of new energy vehicles,' a sign at BYD's booth read.
At the bustling Xiaomi booth, information boards touted the SU7's colour choices, chassis and hardware — but AFP saw no mention of ADAS at all.
'The autonomous driving function marketing race seems to have halted, at least temporarily,' wrote Gong.
Zhang Yu, managing director of Shanghai-based consultancy Automotive Foresight, told AFP that he thought the crash was 'only a setback in marketing terms, which is helpful for a healthy development' of the area.
'This accident was not related to tech or the system itself, it more concerns the ignorance of ADAS and boundary of autonomous driving,' he added.
The technology itself continues to progress.
'That's why this is becoming a pressing issue because car companies are going to be wanting to release these features,' Trivium's Nunlist said.
However, a truly autonomous car — level five on the scale — is 'certainly not imminent', he added, predicting 'very hard last-mile problems'. — AFP

'Because of that, our muruku is suitable for those on a vegetarian diet,' she told Bernama. She said that when they first started the business, she was seven months pregnant. 'As a result, we only made small batches. We had little capital, but I still gave it a try by taking orders from friends. 'We started at home and gradually expanded our business. Nine years ago, we opened a shop in Kubang Semang. 'We reinvested our profits and the business gradually grew,' she said. Fatimah said over 85% of their customers are from the Chinese community, with Chinese New Year being the peak season every year. 'We once received an order from Taiwan but had to turn it down due to high shipping costs. However, the customer came here personally and bought a large quantity to bring back,' she said. Fatimah said they currently use two frying machines, although only one operates on normal days with a production capacity of 150kg per day. During festive seasons, output can reach up to 200kg daily. Meanwhile, Idris shared that their family business is now supported by their son and daughter-in-law. Speaking about the challenges faced as entrepreneurs, he said limited operating space remains the main issue in meeting high demand, which has even led them to decline offers to place their product in a convenience store chain. Nevertheless, the couple is determined to expand the business in the future, with hopes of passing it on to their only child. 'My advice to young entrepreneurs is to first identify your product and your target customers. Patience is essential in the business world. 'Most importantly, as Muslims, we must always give charity and pay zakat. That is the key to sustained blessings, not just in terms of income, but also health,' Idris said.

Grow the US economy? Not with these immigration rules

Reaching that goal, however, will be made far more difficult by a provision they see as central to the law: the US$150bil-plus it adds to immigration enforcement. The administration's agenda of sharply lower immigration and mass deportations is bad for growth. Unauthorised immigrants – persons who entered the country illegally or received a temporary, humanitarian status at entry – are the administration's primary focus as it restricts entry into the United States, revokes humanitarian visas and deports those already in the country without authorisation. To bolster those efforts, the new law includes US$70bil to increase border security and US$75bil for interior enforcement operations. It raises fees for applying for humanitarian visas and work authorisations and imposes a 1% excise tax on remittance transfers. The result will be a smaller population and labour force, and the adverse effects on growth are likely to be substantial. After a surge from 2021 to 2024, unauthorised immigration is expected to fall sharply this year Researchers at the US Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas estimate that a near halt in unauthorised immigration would reduce gross domestic product (GDP) growth by 0.8 of a percentage point this year. For context, average annual US GDP growth for the last decade is about 2.5%. If the US administration is able to reach its goal of one million deportations a year, then the drag on growth would intensify – subtracting 1.5 percentage points from GDP growth in 2027. This level of deportation had previously been viewed as unattainable, mostly because the enforcement agencies lacked the resources to carry it out. This law could change that, making Immigration and Customs Enforcement the best-funded of all federal law-enforcement agencies. The disruptions in the labour market from less immigration would be compounded by the fact that the US economy is currently close to full employment. The unemployment rate among US-born workers was 4% in 2024, compared to 4.2% for foreign-born workers. The White House argues that reducing immigration and increasing deportations would free up jobs for US-born workers, but the types of jobs that unauthorised immigrants most commonly hold are much less likely to be held by US-born workers. Unauthorised immigrants are eight times more likely than US-born workers to be cleaners, for example, and more than twice as likely as authorised immigrants. The most common jobs for unauthorised immigrants also tend to offer lower pay and be more physically demanding. The stark occupational differences make it less likely that deporting unauthorised immigrants will create job opportunities for US-born workers. In fact, mass deportations might even harm US-born workers. Research has found that an immigration enforcement programme from 2008 to 2013 reduced the employment and wages of US-born workers. While US-born and unauthorised immigrants may not be competing for the same job, their jobs can often be complementary. For example, a reduction in the supply of construction labourers could lead to a decrease in the demand for construction-site managers. Also, deportations would reduce the contributions of unauthorised immigrants to the local demand for goods and services, which could weigh on the local labour market. And automation and artificial intelligence (AI) won't be able to immediately fill the gap left by fewer unauthorised immigrants. As with US-born workers, there is an occupational mismatch. For example, AI can currently replace tasks of data analysis in professional and clerical jobs, opposed to manual work that unauthorised immigrants often perform. Advances in robotics could fill more of that gap – but at additional cost. Mass deportations and tighter immigration controls could also have a chilling effect on authorised immigration, including workers and students in technical fields, which could slow the development of new technologies. These immigrants tend to make their peak contributions to productivity several years after arrival.
