You can play ping pong in the middle of Times Square for free all summer
That's because SPIN Midtown, the legendary ping pong social club known for mixing paddles with party vibes, is setting up shop right in the center of the city, offering free outdoor ping pong every Friday from 4 to 7 pm all summer long. And yes, everything's included: paddles, balls, tables, and a neon-soaked, skyscraper-lined backdrop that's hard to beat.
The pop-up takes place smack in the middle of the Times Square pedestrian plaza, between 46th and 50th Streets, transforming the tourist crossroads into a full-on ping pong playground. New Yorkers, office escapees and brave tourists alike are welcome to jump in for a quick rally, whether you're looking to casually volley with friends or test your mettle against one of SPIN's pro players.
No need to BYOP (bring your own paddle)—just show up, step in and start swinging.
If the outdoor energy gets you in the mood for more serious spins, SPIN Midtown is sweetening the deal. Lucky participants may score free 30-minute table reservations at their indoor club just around the corner at Broadway and 50th Street. That means you can continue the ping pong party indoors, with air conditioning, cocktails and snacks to fuel your post-work play.
'Only in New York can you find yourself smashing ping pong balls beneath a billboard and then sipping a cocktail 10 minutes later,' said no one in particular, but it feels true.
The weekly series runs through Friday, August 29, making this one of the summer's easiest, breeziest ways to get a little active and a lot of fun, right in the heart of midtown.

Shakira, The Weeknd to headline free Global Citizen Festival concert in Central Park this fall
Shakira might still be on her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour, but that doesn't mean high-priced concert tickets are your only chance to see her performing live this summer. In fact, you can see her totally free on Saturday, September 27, when she and The Weeknd headline the 2025 Global Citizen Festival, once again held at Central Park's Great Lawn. An annual NYC event since 2012, Global Citizen Festival effectively turns the Great Lawn into a massive open-air concert as a reward for doing good in the community. The concert blends superstar performances (past headliners include Beyoncé, Lizzo, and Metallica) with calls for global change, from promoting climate action to ending extreme poverty. This year's event will be hosted for the 11th time by Hugh Jackman, a Global Citizen Ambassador. The concert will also see appearances from Tyla, Ayra Starr and Mariah the Scientist, with more performers to be announced in the coming weeks. "I'm honored to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September,' Shakira said in a statement. 'Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action," Shakira said. Tickets are technically free; you don't have to pay for them, but you do have to earn them. Luckily, you'll simultaneously earn karma. Anyone interested in scoring tickets for the event can do so by downloading the Global Citizen app or going to its website and signing up to be a Global Citizen. Then you just have to participate in simple advocacy efforts like signing petitions, sharing awareness videos, or finding volunteer opportunities, each of which earns points that can be used to enter ticket lotteries for the festival. For 2025, the campaign is focused on three major global goals: providing energy access to 1 million people across Africa; mobilizing $200 million to protect 30 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest; and giving 30,000 children around the world access to quality education, in partnership with FIFA. There's also a strong local focus this year. The initiative is working to support nonprofits throughout all five boroughs and aims to register 40,000 New Yorkers for volunteer opportunities, including youth mentorship, resume coaching and neighborhood revitalization projects.

Can't snag Shakespeare in the Park tix this summer? PBS will air Twelfth Night starring Lupita Nyong'o, Peter Dinklage
Shakespeare in the Park is one of the most storied cultural events in New York City, but good luck snagging tickets. Even if you live in one of the buildings along Central Park (in which case, don't hog the free tickets from the rest of us, OK?), the process of getting seats is a long and physically arduous one, entailing a box office line that forms at dawn the day of performance. (There is, thankfully, the digital lottery now as well, but you know what lotteries can be like.) This year is a particularly buzzy one, as the Delacorte Theater reopens with Twelfth Night after a two-year renovation. And to make it even more special, PBS announced that it will air the production this fall as part of its Great Performances series, giving not just disappointed New Yorkers but the entire country the chance to see Lupita Nyong'o, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Peter Dinklage, and Sandra Oh star in William Shakespeare's cross-dressing comedy classic. Twelfth Night will premiere on PBS at 9pm ET on Friday, November 14. Trimmed down to a delightful 90 minutes by director Sahem Ali, the production's cast also includes Daphne Rubin-Vega, Junior Nyong'o, b, Khris Davis, John Ellison Conlee, Ariyan Kassam, Valentino Musumeci, Moses Sumney, Kapil Talwalker and Joe Tapper. PBS's Great Performances series this year also includes several more offerings that should thrill theater lovers. The series premieres October 3 with the documentary The Magic of Grace Bumbry, about the first Black opera singer to perform at the White House, followed November 7 by The Tiler Peck Story: Suspending Time, about the ballerina (most recently seen on Prime Video's series Etoile). A live capture of the Carnegie Hall concert The Great War and The Great Gatsby will premiere on November 11, Veterans' Day, a fitting choice for a concert that uses The Great Gatsby to explore World War I. And Dick Van Dyke takes center stage December 12 with Starring Dick Van Dyke, an American Masters episode celebrating the beloved entertainer's 100th birthday, featuring rare footage. And December 16 sees the premiere of the English National Ballet's production of The Nutcracker.

Love Island fans slam Harrison's ‘scripted' apology as he reunites with Lauren on Aftersun after quitting villa
LOVE Island fans have slammed Harrison Solomon's apology on tonight's spin-off show Aftersun after he reunited with Lauren Wood. Harrison quit the villa on Friday in shock scenes just 24 hours after Lauren was dumped from the show. 4 4 4 It followed his love triangle with her and Toni Laites, which drew criticism from charity Women's Aid. Aftersun host Maya Jama grilled Harrison over his behaviour in the villa after viewers watched him swap between the two girls with little consideration for their feelings. He even pleaded with Toni to pick him in a recoupling hours after having sex with Lauren. When Toni did choose him, Lauren was left in floods of tears and felt humiliated. Speaking tonight, Harrison said the point his romancing both girls had gone too far was after he'd slept with Lauren. "I think maybe when we did bits," he said. "Probably took it a little bit too far talking to Toni after that. "I obviously regret that massively and I apologise to both the girls but, yeah, it wasn't good for me." He then said if he had his time again he would have had up front conversations with Toni and Lauren earlier to save them getting upset. It followed his return to social medi a earlier in the day in which he said: "Back on home turf and carrying every lesson with me. What a whirlwind, confusing, raw, beautiful in parts, and deeply humbling. I entered with the intention not to hurt anyone. "Truthfully, although I didn't manage that, I leave with a heart more open, and a soul willing to learn. Life isn't always easy, it's felt, it's flawed, it's full of growth. Thank you to those who saw the good in me even when I struggled to see it myself. This is just the beginning," Love Island fans stunned as girl is brutally dumped after arrival of latest bombshell Angel But viewers weren't buying his latest apology, with one writing on X: "Harrison has CLEARLY wrote a speech and memorised it this is not genuine." Another said: "Harrison has gotten away with what he's done way too easily." A third posted: "Harrison's not sorry for sh*t." A fourth said: "Is anyone buying this with Harrison?" "Im glad no one clapped at Harrison's poor excuse of an apology." Prior to his villa exit, Women's Aid responded to the difficult scenes in the villa, criticising the ITV reality show for perpetuating misogyny and sexism. Jessye Werner, Communications Manager at the charity, acknowledged the efforts production companies have made to highlight toxic behaviours but stressed that more progress is necessary. She told The Tab: "Despite these positive steps, we still see unhealthy patterns of behaviour on these shows, showing just how steeped in misogyny and sexism our society still is. 'Women are often lied to, slut-shamed and manipulated, as well as laughed at behind their backs. Misogyny and sexism lay the foundation for the tolerance of abuse and violence – it reinforces a culture that excuses and trivialises violence against women and girls. 'More must be done to educate contestants on sexism and misogyny, and it is a great credit to viewers who take to social media, continuing to call out these behaviours as soon as they see them.'
