Punjab Health Minister issues strict directives for uninterrupted oxygen supply in all critical care units
The directives came in the wake of the death of three patients at the civil hospital in Jalandhar on Sunday, with the kin of the deceased blaming a technical fault in the oxygen supply at the trauma centre for the deaths.
Chandigarh, Jul 29 (PTI) Punjab's Health Minister Balbir Singh on Tuesday issued strict directives to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply and power backup in all critical care units, including ICUs, Operation Theatres (OTs) and emergency wards across all government health facilities in the state.
Balbir Singh said that approximately one thousand new doctors will be joining in the coming months, as the recruitment process is near completion, which will considerably improve the quality of health services.
The Health Minister also issued stringent directives regarding medicine supply, instructing civil surgeons to maintain at least one month's buffer stock of all 368 types of essential medicines and warned against any shortage of essential medicines.
'No patient should be prescribed any medicines from outside the hospital,' he said, while reiterating that the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led government's commitment to ensure free and accessible healthcare.
He said that Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) have been empowered to purchase any non-essential medicine as per their requirement, warning that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any non-complying medical officer.
To bolster the medicine dispensing system and overall patient experience, civil surgeons and SMOs were also directed to visit OPDs daily and collect patient feedback.
To further enhance patient satisfaction, Balbir Singh directed civil surgeons to ensure that Outpatient Department (OPD) services are delivered within an hour of registration.
In another move to enhance critical care capabilities, the minister announced that every doctor and paramedic, including staff nurses, will undergo training in critical care and advanced life support.
He also tasked each civil surgeon to submit their district's health status in comparison to the Millennium Development Goals, enabling the department to set targets for better progress. PTI SUN RT RT

Kolkata, Jul 30 (PTI) President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday asserted that doctors have played an important role in the nation's development, citing the eradication of many diseases, an increase in life expectancy and progress in the field of vaccination. Murmu, while speaking at the first convocation of AIIMS-Kalyani in Nadia district of West Bengal, also hailed the contributions of the state's second chief minister, Dr B C Roy, who was a medical practitioner himself. 'Doctors, conscious of their social responsibilities, have played an important role in the development of the nation. The average life expectancy, which was only 32 years at the time of Independence, has now more than doubled to about 70 years. There has been extraordinary progress in the field of vaccination in the last few years," she said. 'Many diseases have been eradicated. For example, India was declared trachoma-free last year. But there are still many challenges in which young doctors will play a decisive role. Doctors have a bigger role than the government and other stakeholders in controlling health problems such as diabetes, heart ailments and obesity," she emphasised. Highlighting the new changes taking place in the field of medical science every day, the President advised students to be lifelong learners and stay updated on new research and medical methods. The President noted that the foundation stone of the planned city of Kalyani was laid by Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, who, during his long tenure as the chief minister of West Bengal, continued to serve patients free of cost. She urged doctors to follow the example of Dr Roy of providing free medical services to the poor and the deprived. Murmu urged the students, teachers and administrators of AIIMS-Kalyani to make a resolution to make it an institute of national pride. The President told doctors to adopt such a healthy lifestyle which could be an example for common people to follow. The convocation marked the graduation of the first MBBS batch of the institute, admitted in 2019, along with Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) scholars. With this first convocation ceremony, the first chapter in the history of your institution is being completed. Aster DM Healthcare Q1 net up 22 pc at Rs 90 cr
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) Aster DM Healthcare on Wednesday said its profit after tax increased by 22 per cent year-on-year to Rs 90 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2025. The healthcare service provider reported a net profit of Rs 74 crore in the April-June quarter of last year. Revenue increased to Rs 1,078 crore in the June quarter as compared with Rs 1,002 crore in the year-ago period, Aster DM Healthcare said in a statement. The company announced a Rs 580 crore investment to set up its fifth hospital in Bengaluru—a 500-bed facility at Yeshwanthpur—expanding citywide capacity to 2,580 beds. Medical Colleges Rose From 387 In 2014 To 780 Now: Health Ministry To Rajya Sabha
Last Updated: Health Minister J P Nadda noted that public health is a state subject, and state govts are responsible for engaging available medical professionals in various healthcare setups. Since 2014, the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 780, undergraduate seats have risen from 51,348 to 1,15,900, and postgraduate seats have grown from 31,185 to 74,306, as Union Health Minister J P Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Answering a question, Nadda mentioned the government's efforts to increase the number of medical colleges and both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats, reported PTI. Currently, there are 13,86,157 registered allopathic doctors and 7,51,768 registered practitioners in the AYUSH system of medicine. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a doctor-to-population ratio of 1:1000. 'Assuming that 80 percent of registered practitioners in both the allopathic and AYUSH systems are available, the estimated doctor-population ratio in the country is 1:811," Nadda said. Nadda noted that public health is a state subject, and state governments are responsible for engaging available medical professionals in various healthcare setups, the PTI report added. To bridge healthcare delivery gaps, the government supports states and UTs through various central sector and centrally sponsored schemes/programmes. This support includes financial assistance, capacity building, provision of essential medicines, diagnostics, teleconsultation services, etc., to ensure effective and accessible primary healthcare. The Family Adoption Programme (FAP) has been integrated into the MBBS curriculum to provide equitable healthcare access to rural populations. The FAP involves medical colleges adopting villages and MBBS students adopting families within these villages. This enables regular follow-ups for vaccination, growth monitoring, menstrual hygiene, Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation, healthy lifestyle practices, nutrition, vector control, and medication adherence, according to the minister. It also helps educate families about ongoing government health programmes. Additionally, the District Residency Programme (DRP), notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC), mandates a compulsory three-month posting and training of PG medical students at district hospitals as part of the course curriculum. The DRP strengthens healthcare delivery in rural and underserved areas. Since its launch in 2018, 1,78,154 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) have been established as of July 15 by transforming existing Sub-Health Centres (SHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) to provide comprehensive primary healthcare closer to people's homes. Services have expanded from basic maternal and child care to twelve comprehensive healthcare packages. With these reforms, annual footfall increased from 13.49 crore in the financial year 2019-20 to 128.08 crore in 2024-25. Over 117 crore individuals have been screened for hypertension, diabetes, oral, breast, and cervical cancers. The availability of medicines at AAMs and teleconsultations with specialists have enhanced accessibility, reduced costs, and addressed provider shortages, Nadda stated.
