Elon Musk's X accused of hosting child pornography content; must face revived lawsuit over negligence

Time of India2 days ago
A federal appeals court has revived part of a lawsuit accusing
Elon Musk
's social media platform,
X
(formerly Twitter), of negligence in its response to
child pornography content
. While X benefits from broad immunity under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the platform must still face claims that it failed to act promptly after learning of a sexually explicit video involving two underage boys. The court's decision highlights growing concerns over how social media platforms handle
child exploitation online
.
Elon Musk's platform under fire despite legal protections
Although Elon Musk was not personally named in the lawsuit and the case predates his acquisition of Twitter in 2022, X remains legally vulnerable due to how it handled the content once it had 'actual knowledge.' Court documents state the platform took nine days to remove and report a video involving explicit images of minors—after it had been viewed over 167,000 times. Judge Danielle Forrest clarified that the statutory obligation to report child pornography overrides Section 230 protections once a platform becomes aware of such material.

The plaintiffs—referred to as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2—were 13 and 14 years old when a predator, posing as a peer on Snapchat, coerced them into sending explicit content. That material was later posted to Twitter, where it remained despite multiple user reports and a complaint from one of the boy's mothers. The court also revived a separate claim asserting that X's infrastructure made it unnecessarily difficult for users to report child sexual abuse material, suggesting flaws in platform design and moderation workflows.
Broader concerns about CSAM handling on X persist
Although some claims were dismissed—such as those alleging X profited from sex trafficking or designed features that "amplify" abuse—the lawsuit adds to existing criticism of the platform's response to child sexual abuse material. Nonprofits like Thorn have severed ties with X over payment disputes and policy concerns, and watchdogs report that illicit hashtags and spam accounts still circulate CSAM. While X has announced improvements in detection technology, critics say progress remains insufficient amid persistent issues.

Prohibitory orders likely ahead of PUCSC polls amid rising student violence

1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: With Panjab University likely to hold its PU Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) elections on Sept 4 or 5, the administration has started security preparations much earlier than usual. A meeting between the university and police officials, including the senior superintendent of police, is scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the imposition of prohibitory orders around Aug 15 — a first for PU student elections. The move comes amid concerns over rising student violence on and off campus. Nearly 100 police personnel have already been deployed for security, with three permanent checkpoints established near the Administrative Block, Ankur School, and University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS). Police are checking vehicles, enforcing barricading, and monitoring student movement to restrict entry of outsiders. "This time, deployment is not symbolic. We are actively checking for weapons and other suspicious items, especially during evening hours," said a senior police officer posted on campus. The strict measures follow a series of violent clashes involving student groups in PU and other city colleges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Just a few days back, two FIRs were registered after rival groups clashed at GGDSD College in Sector 32. On April 28, SOPU factions fought at the PU Student Centre. On April 8, the Dalal camp and Joint Action Committee (JAC) clashed outside Boys Hostel No. 4. On March 28, PU student Aditya Thakur was murdered during a fest on the Sector 25 campus. In another case, on March 22, PUCSC joint secretary and others were booked following an ABVP-related brawl in Sector 15. Vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig confirmed that the university has called the police meeting to finalise steps for ensuring peace. "Various student organisations have multiple factions and hence infighting. The past six months have seen many student groups clashing with each other," she said. PU authorities have also scheduled a meeting with all student parties for Tuesday. Dean student welfare Prof Amit Chauhan said the administration will also meet student leaders. "The aim is to ensure a peaceful environment during elections. We are concerned about outsider involvement and are considering all options, including prohibitory orders, though the matter is yet to be finalised," he said. Sources said the university is also planning stricter controls on vehicle entry and increased surveillance over the next few weeks. Security staff have been instructed to assist police in enforcing discipline across the campus. Police officials said that some student groups are being monitored for alleged connections to gangsters. "We are keeping tabs on movement, contacts, and past involvement of some leaders with criminal elements. This time we are taking proactive steps," said a police officer. With campaigning expected to begin in mid-August, university authorities say maintaining order is the top priority and students will have to operate within strict boundaries. Infopark Phase III: GCDA to pool 1,000 acres, to issue notification soon

Kochi: Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) initiated procedures to publish the notification for land pooling for the much-awaited Phase III of Infopark GCDA is planning to pool nearly 1,000 acres to establish the new campus across 300 acres in Kizhakkambalam and Kunnathunadu villages of the district. The project will be the first land-pooling project in Kerala. Govt tasked GCDA with land pooling through an order last year. Following this, GCDA engaged in discussions with Infopark at various stages, conducted site inspections and began efforts to identify suitable land. However, GCDA faced technical hurdles as the identified lands were outside GCDA's jurisdiction. The authority approached govt, which subsequently issued an order last month assigning GCDA a special task for land pooling in the area. The first step for land pooling is issuing an initial notification by determining the suitable land. The area intended for pooling, along with details including survey numbers, will be published with the help of a boundary map. Subsequently, a meeting of landowners in the area will be convened to present the project details. If 75% of total landowners agree to pooling, GCDA will proceed with the project. Following this, a draft project document will be prepared for govt approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo After gathering public opinions and necessary changes, the final project document will be prepared before commencing work. After implementing projects on the pooled land, a specified percentage of land will be returned to landowners. If 75% of landowners do not consent, steps will be initiated to identify other suitable land, said GCDA authorities. A press note issued by GCDA on Monday said Phase III campus will feature six key components: carbon neutrality, self-sufficiency in water resources, a complete waste management system, road, rail and airport connectivity, an inclusive IT park and a maintenance system that doesn't disrupt the functioning of IT companies. Besides IT companies, there will be residential facilities, commercial establishments, sports and cultural facilities, recreational areas, hospitals and educational institutions, it said.

Gold jewellery worth Rs 8.5 lakh missing from locked safe

Mangaluru: A theft case was reported at Barke police station limits after a woman alleged that gold jewellery weighing around 171g and valued at approximately Rs 8.5 lakh was stolen from her home.
