Brazil to reopen National Museum destroyed by fire in 2018
Journalists and special guests previewed the renovated museum in Rio de Janeiro, where they could also see a large part of its 20-million-artifact collection.
Brazil's Education Minister Camilo Santana told journalists the museum's complete renovation is slated for completion by the end of 2027. He added that the reconstruction budget of almost 517 million Brazilian reais ($95 million) is being split between public and private companies.
The building was once a royal palace that served as the seat of the united Portuguese and Brazilian empire before the museum's collection was transferred there in 1892.
Visitors will be welcomed at the main entrance by a symbol of the institution's resilience: the Bendego meteorite, which weighs 5.6 tons and was found 241 years ago in the countryside of the state of Bahia.
Brazil's Federal Police ruled out criminal offense in the 2020 fire, stating that the blaze in the former palace likely started with an air conditioning unit inside an auditorium near the front entrance. Arson was ruled out.
Some artifacts have been recovered, notably most fragments of a skull belonging to a woman dubbed Luzia. It is one of the oldest human fossils ever found in the Americas, and was a top museum treasure.
Recovery efforts were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plant of Coca-Cola maker suspended for potential contamination in Brazil
BRASILIA, June 4 (Reuters) - A plant owned by Brazilian soft drink firm Solar, which produces for Coca-Cola (KO.N), opens new tab, had a fault in its cooling system detected, leading production and bottling to be suspended as a precautionary measure, Brazil's government said on Wednesday. Production was halted after authorities established a liquid used in the cooling process had come in contact with products being manufactured, Brazil's agriculture ministry said, in reference to an on-site inspection of the plant in Ceara state. The liquid in question contains food-grade alcohol that does not pose a high health risk and does not contain toxic substances, the ministry added in a statement. All of the products that may have been compromised remain in the company's inventory, Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro told a press conference in Brasilia, adding that there was no risk that the affected products could have reached supermarkets. According to the ministry, the production suspension will be maintained until Solar enforces the necessary corrections and proves the elimination of all risks in the production process, which may occur as early as today. Samples from about 9 million liters of soft drinks await laboratory analysis, which should be concluded in five days, the ministry said. Solar and Coca-Cola did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

British journalist Charlotte Alice Peet was finally found on Monday following a four month search by Brazilian authorities. Ms Peet, 32, who has worked for The Independent, went missing in February after she flew to Brazil in November. She had previously lived and worked in Brazil. After her disappearance was flagged by friends and family, Brazilian authorities spent four months tracking her down before she was found in the major eastern city of Sao Paulo. Ms Peet informed authorities that she had voluntarily disappeared, and did not want to contact her family. Here is the full story of Charlotte Alice Peet's disappearance and how Brazilian authorities tracked her down. Who is Charlotte Alice Peet? Ms Peet had nine years of experience as a journalist including four years of reporting abroad. She worked for a host of British publications, including The Independent. She worked as a freelance journalist in London after a stint as a foreign correspondent in Brazil, reporting for publications including Al Jazeera, The Times and the Evening Standard, according to her LinkedIn profile. Ms Peet also described herself as fluent in Portuguese. What happened when she went missing? Ms Peet was declared missing in February after being seen boarding a bus in Sao Paulo. The journalist, 32, is said to have told a friend she was planning to go to Rio de Janeiro on 8 February before she disappeared. Days later, the family contacted her friend to say they had lost contact. Ms Peet had also not told her family that she had flown to Brazil back in November. A missing person report was initially lodged at Rio de Janeiro's Tourist Attention Centre on 17 February before being passed on to Sao Paulo, where Ms Peet was supposed to have been before she disappeared. Local authorities launched an investigation to find the reporter on 17 February. How did the search play out? The Rio de Janeiro Whereabouts Discovery Unit (DDPA) initially said they believed that Ms Peet stayed at a hostel in Copacabana. Police believe she remained until 17 February, before moving to another hostel in Botafogo where she stayed until 24 February. On at least two occasions, she visited bars in Copacabana and Leme.
