
Young Europeans face rising threat from misinformation as social media becomes main news source
According to the latest European Parliament Youth Survey, 42% of Europeans aged 16 to 30 rely mainly on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to access news about politics and social issues. This shift reflects changing attitudes toward news consumption – speeding toward a fast-paced, easily accessible model – and puts younger generations at an increasing risk of disinformation.
The younger the respondent, the more likely they were to depend on social media. The report revealed that teens between the ages of 16 and 18 trust TikTok and Instagram more than any other platform. Meanwhile, those aged 25 to 30 rely significantly less on TikTok (29% compared to 51% of 16-18 year-olds) and Instagram (41% compared to 52%). Instead, they prefer Facebook, which is twice as popular among them (36%) compared to the youngest group (17%). However, respondents aged 25 to 30 are ultimately still more inclined to get their news from online press platforms (30%) and radio (19%), compared to just 21% and 13% among 16-18 year-olds, respectively.
This is cause for concern: another investigation, the 2024 Reuters Institute Digital News Report, revealed that TikTok is a blatant source of misinformation, with 27% of users finding it difficult to identify deceitful content. Meanwhile, Instagram's parent company, Meta, recently decided to relax its fact-checking system by implementing community notes instead – which, as demonstrated by Elon Musk's X, are often unreliable.
Trusting the feeds over the institutions
Europeans are aware of the risks and recognize the dangers plaguing their feeds. 76% percent of those surveyed had encountered fake or deceitful news in just the past week; among them, 15% faced disinformation "often", and 32% 'sometimes'. Still, they remain loyal to bite-sized news sources, with Instagram being the most popular (47% favoured it), followed by TikTok and YouTube. Facebook and X are lagging behind among the younger generations, while WhatsApp was the main news source for 16% of young users.
The social media news cycle is driven by influencers and alternative media, rather than traditional news outlets. This makes it harder for users to verify facts, while also diminishing their faith in mainstream journalism. It also, as highlighted by the report, decreases their trust in political institutions: 21% of the young people surveyed expressed scepticism toward the EU, and 15% admitted they skipped the 2024 EU vote due to a lack of information.
In parallel, they are becoming increasingly reliant on their social media platforms as vehicles for activism, as opposed to just voting or participating in protests and petitions.
When it comes to politics, fake news and altered content (including images and videos created using Artificial Intelligence) has been used to influence public opinion to the point of manipulating elections and polarizing society. A 2016 fabricated statement claimed that Pope Francis had publicly endorsed Donald Trump during his first presidential campaign, while a similar 2018 story said Shakira was boycotting Israel during her world tour.
But the problem is also psychological: constant exposure to false information, which is often alarming and sensationalistic, can increase anxiety, confusion, and mistrust of traditional media. This is overwhelming many young social media users, pushing them to avoid news altogether and fostering ignorance.

After the Tuesday upgrade, Grok praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in the posts on social media platform X, and suggested that people with Jewish surnames were more likely to spread online hate. X deleted some of those posts several hours later, amid growing outrage. "We deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced," the company posted on X Saturday, adding that it had modified the system "to prevent further abuse." The company said the change occurred after the chatbot was prompted to "reply to the post just like a human" as well as "tell like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct." As a result, Grok became susceptible to users' "extremist views," which made it produce "responses containing unethical or controversial opinions to engage the user." Grok, which Musk promised would be an "edgy" truthteller following its launch in 2023, has been mired in controversy. In March, xAI acquired X in a $33 billion deal that allowed the company to integrate the platform's data resources with the chatbot's development. In May, Grok ignited controversy by generating posts with unbacked right-wing propaganda about purported oppression of white South Africans that it termed "white genocide." Ukraine and EU launch €100 million military innovation partnership
Ukraine and the EU announced a €100 million fund on Friday to accelerate defence innovation by building on battlefield-tested innovations from Ukraine. The BraveTech EU initiative, unveiled at the fourth annual Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) in Rome, was announced by Ukraine's Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and the EU's Defence Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius. BraveTech EU is the first major tech alliance between Ukraine and Europe on equal terms, with each side set to invest €50 million in the programme. The initiative will focus on small and medium-sized businesses and start-ups in both Ukraine and Europe. The alliance will see both sides exchange regulatory experience, develop innovations and procure new defence technologies. "European colleagues will receive results from the battlefield," Fedorov said at a press conference in Rome. Other European countries may also join in to fund the initiative, he added. "The EU and its member states have an industrial capacity that can help Ukraine develop new defence systems and increase European resilience," Kubilius said in a statement. The programme is set to be rolled out in two phases, starting with hackathons for Ukrainian and European defence companies in autumn, Fedorov said in a post on his Telegram page. In 2026, the plan is to expand the programme with larger grants and investment in the most promising projects. The BraveTech EU initiative will integrate Ukraine's defence industry into European mechanisms, connecting Ukraine's BRAVE1 defence technology platform with EU platforms such as the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the EU Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS). Zelenskyy has long called on Ukraine's western allies to provide more military support as the country's forces continue to battle Russia's forces since the 2022 full-scale invasion. Patriots for Ukraine The BraveTech EU programme was announced on the same day that US President Donald Trump said that Washington will send weapons, including Patriot air defence systems, to Ukraine via NATO. "We're going to be sending Patriots to NATO and then NATO will distribute that," Trump told US TV channel CBS News, adding that the alliance would pay for the systems. The Patriot missile system can detect and intercept a wide range of oncoming air targets, high-end ballistic missiles in particular, and is regarded as one of the world's best, at a time when Moscow is increasing its nightly missile and drone attacks amid its all-out war against Ukraine, now well into its fourth year. Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome on Thursday, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Germany would pay for two of the systems, while Norway has agreed to supply one. After repeated Russian drone and missile onslaughts on Kyiv, authorities also announced on Friday that they are establishing a comprehensive drone interception system under a project called Clear Sky. The project includes a 260-million-hryvnia (approximately €5.3 million) investment in interceptor drones, operator training, and new mobile response units, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv military administration. Zelenskyy appealed to foreign partners to help Ukraine accelerate the production of the newly developed interceptor drones, which have proven successful against Iranian-made Shahed drones and their Russian variant, the Geran-2. "We found a solution, as a country, scientists and engineers found a solution. That's the key," he said. "We need financing. And then, we will intercept."

France probes X over algorithm enabling 'foreign interference', says prosecutor
Investigators would be examining actions of the company, and its senior managers, after two complaints were filed in January, prosecutor Laure Beccuau said, without specifically mentioning X owner Elon Musk. The two complaints made on January 12th reported "the supposed use of the X algorithm for purposes of foreign interference", her office said, without elaborating. The first complaint was filed by a centrist member of parliament Eric Bothorel, who has looked into cybersecurity. Advertisement Bothorel warned against "recent changes to the X algorithm, as well as apparent interferences in its management since Elon Musk acquired" the company in 2022. He highlighted a "reduction in the diversity of voices and options" that went against guaranteeing a secure, respectful environment on the social media platform. He pointed to "a lack of clarity in criteria that led to algorithm changes and moderation decisions", and to "personal interventions from Elon Musk in the management on his platform". All this presented a "real danger and a threat for our democracies", he said. French investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaîné in February reported that the second complaint had come from a cybersecurity director in public office. He reported a "major modification in the algorithm used by the X platform, which today offers a huge amount of political content that is hateful, racist, anti-LGBTQ (or) homophobic, and aims to skew democratic debate in France", it said. The prosecutor said on Friday that the investigation had been opened after "verification and contributions by French researchers" and further "elements contributed by different political institutions". Laurent Buanec, France director of X, on January 22nd said X had "strict, clear and public rules to protect the platform from hateful discourse" and fight disinformation. He said the algorithm was "built in a way to avoid offering you hateful content".
