Reds score two in ninth to rally past Padres 3-2
With the Reds trailing 2-1 entering the ninth against Padres closer Robert Suarez (2-4), Elly De La Cruz reached on third-baseman Tyler Wade's fielding error, before Suarez got Austin Hays to fly out. Gavin Lux walked, leading to Spencer Steer's game-tying single to center.
Jose Trevino singled to load the bases, setting up Benson's game-winner to help the Reds take the weekend series for their fifth victory in the past seven games.
Nick Lodolo allowed one run on seven hits across 5 1/3 innings for Cincinnati, striking out five and walking two. Emilio Pagan (1-2) threw a scoreless top of the ninth for the Reds and Benson went 3-for-4 in the victory.
Stephen Kolek allowed one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Padres, while striking out five and walking one. Xander Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with a solo home run for San Diego, which has dropped two of three after a 4-2 homestand.
San Diego struck first as Bogaerts led off the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season to give the Padres a 1-0 edge.
San Diego's Gavin Sheets and Jose Iglesias each singled to begin the sixth before Jake Cronenworth's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Scott Barlow replaced Lodolo and retired Elias Diaz before he walked Luis Arraez to load the bases. Manny Machado popped out to end the threat.
Benson began the sixth for the Reds with a single and Matt McLain reached on a two-out infield single to chase Kolek from the game. The Padres' Adrian Morejon allowed De La Cruz's game-tying single on his first pitch.
Lyon Richardson pitched the seventh for the Reds, surrendering Fernando Tatis Jr.'s one-out walk and Bogaerts subsequent double. Sheets was walked intentionally for incoming reliever Tony Santillan, who allowed Iglesias' run-scoring groundout to give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
Benson doubled and reached third in the eighth, but reliever Jason Adam struck out McLain to preserve the Padres' one-run lead.

In fact, his ERA over his 41 career games is an even-better 1.99 Skenes is making $875,000 this year, though that number is expected to balloon once he negotiates his first long-term contract. Previously, ESPN's MLB insider Jeff Passan claimed there was a 'real argument' for the Pirates to trade Skenes at the deadline this year. 'The truth is, there will be teams that ask about Paul Skenes at the deadline this year, and I don't anticipate that he's going to be moved,' Passan began on the Pat McAfee Show. 'But there's a real argument to be made that the best thing for the Pittsburgh Pirates would be to move Paul Skenes while he has the most value.' With social media becoming evermore a breeding ground for hate filled messages and comments, one PGA Tour star has opened up about his need to take a step back from one website in particular. A 2023 study from the Anti-Defamation League reports that 52 percent of Americans have experienced harassment on social media. Sports stars and celebrities see it all the time. Among those on the receiving end of the vitriol is Max Homa, the six-time PGA Tour winner who built a social media following for roasting amateur golfers' swings at the users' own request. But now, he says that the inundation of hate has become too much. Talking to reporters ahead of the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities region of Illinois and Iowa, Homa opened up about the abuse he's received on the platform and why he felt the need to step away from it. 'The reason for that was just the vitriol you read online. It has become a safe haven for people who are, I think, angry themselves,' Homa explained. 'It is quite absurd how comfortable people feel writing awful things. Diego Luna double fires US past Guatemala and into Gold Cup final
Diego Luna scored twice in the first 15 minutes and the US men's national team held on for a 2-1 victory over Guatemala in St Louis on Wednesday to advance to the final of the Concacaf Gold Cup. Luna tallied in the fourth and 15th minutes before Olger Escobar made it 2-1 in the 80th minute. American goalkeeper Matt Freese made four saves, including a diving stop at the left post on Joes Morales in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. The US will play Mexico for the title on Sunday in Houston after El Tri beat Honduras 1-0 in the late semi-final on Wednesday. Luna, a 5ft 8in Real Salt Lake midfielder, scored his first US goal on Sunday against Costa Rica and leads the team in goal contributions in 2025 with seven (three goals, four assists). At this time a year ago, he was miffed that he was not selected of the US Olympic team for the Paris Games. Now, he is a mainstay, at least for this iteration of a team that does not include most of the European-based players. Still, Luna appears to be playing his way onto the roster for the 2026 World Cup. He opened the scoring with his quick reaction to rebound of a long shot by Luca de la Torre. Goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro fumbled the ball straight to Luna, who brought it down with his right foot before delivering a left-footed strike. Luna silenced the pro-Guatemala even further with his laser from 22 yards after taking a pass from Malik Tillman. The desperate Guatemalans dominated the rest of the half, outshooting the US 12-2 over the final 20 minutes. Navarro was the story early in the second half as the US looked for a third goal. First, he parried a header by Patrick Agyemang in the 62nd minute, then two minutes later Agyemang broke free but couldn't get the ball past the keeper. The saves proved huge when Escobar dribbled to the top of the box and slipped a shot through several Americans. This was the nations' first-ever meeting in a Gold Cup knockout round and Guatemala's first appearance in a Gold Cup semi-final since 1996.
