Max Homa calls X 'a safe haven for a**holes' as he reveals why he walked away from it
A 2023 study from the Anti-Defamation League reports that 52 percent of Americans have experienced harassment on social media. Sports stars and celebrities see it all the time.
Among those on the receiving end of the vitriol is Max Homa, the six-time PGA Tour winner who built a social media following for roasting amateur golfers' swings at the users' own request. But now, he says that the inundation of hate has become too much.
Talking to reporters ahead of the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities region of Illinois and Iowa, Homa opened up about the abuse he's received on the platform and why he felt the need to step away from it.
'The reason for that was just the vitriol you read online. It has become a safe haven for people who are, I think, angry themselves,' Homa explained.
'It is quite absurd how comfortable people feel writing awful things. I step away a lot also from Instagram, but I feel like that's been a a bit less crazy, although it's still not great.

'So I take my breaks from that. But if you wouldn't choose to sit around a table with somebody who's being that mean, I don't know. You would always get up. If you were right there and someone was being rude to you, you'd either ask them to leave or you would leave.
'Twitter or X or whatever is an awful, awful place. It took me a while to catch on to how impactful that can be and how much of a waste of energy.
'I missed the connection with the fans, but nothing comes without just so much hate and anger. There's a lot of love in there, too, but unfortunately, it really does get overwhelmed with the... You have one really bad one, but I don't know if it's a gambling world or whatnot.
'I'm happy they can do it because it seems fun as hell in golf. But you get people... People say some bad things. You get people telling you should die on the Internet.
'Has nothing to do with not connecting. I'd love to keep connecting with people, but I try to do it in person a bit more because I have yet to meet somebody in person who has said anything even remotely mean.
'It's a safe haven for a**holes, for lack of a better term. Sorry, PGA Tour.'
Homa has had a tough 2025 - having fallen from 41st in the Official World Golf Ranking at the end of 2024 to a current ranking of 99th.
His best finish of the year so far has been a tie for 12th at The Masters, while he's also missed seven cuts in 16 tournament appearances - including a cut at last week's Rocket Classic.

I was so obsessed with doodling I drew all over my £1.35m mansion - but after 36 hours without sleep I thought my mum was Nigel Farage and I had to be sectioned
A world-renowned artist who doodled all over his £1.35million mansion has revealed how he went from earning huge sums to being sectioned on a psychiatric ward. Sam Cox, also known as Mr Doodle, rose to fame in 2017 when a video of him using a marker pen to draw all over a shop was viewed 46 million times in one week on social media. Soon after, his doodles were selling for one million dollars each and he was being commissioned by big name brands such as Adidas. And in 2019, the 31-year-old's dream came true when he purchased a property in the quaint town of Tenterden, Kent for £1.35 million. He planned to draw all over the house, starting in the main bedroom with dream-themed doodles. The compulsive artist started working for 36 hours straight to finish the project, which he now thinks sparked a mental breakdown. Sam began to think that his mother was Nigel Farage and that President Donald Trump had asked him to graffiti his 'big, beautiful wall' between the US and Mexico. In a new Channel 4 documentary 'The Trouble With Mr Doodle', he reveals that he had to be restrained by six nurses after he was sectioned in February 2020. Sam told The Sun: 'I felt like I was in a game. You think health professionals and even family and friends are trying to hurt you. 'Donald Trump or other celebrities took the place of other patients in the hospital for me. 'I remember thinking my mum was like Nigel Farage.' Sam, who grew up in Kent, spent six weeks in hospital and has now fully recovered. Speaking about his 'Doodle House' project back in 2022, Sam said he was determined to finished it on his own. He told The Sunday Times: 'It's the longest project I've done. I wanted to say I'd done it all myself.' Sam left no surface untouched, with every wall and ceiling and all amenities - including the television, hob and bath - covered in monochromatic doodles. Despite admitting he did not plan any of his drawings, Sam gave every room its own theme. For example, the hallway was covered with Noah's Ark creations, while the stairs were decorated with Heaven and Hell drawings. Sam said: 'I had a rough idea of the theme but the individual doodles are spontaneous. 'My main inspiration still goes back to when I was kid watching Tom and Jerry, Wacky Races and SpongeBob SquarePants, and video games like Crash Bandicoot. I always wanted to draw characters for video games.' For the indoor doodles, the 31-year-old explained that he used black acrylic paint and a bingo marker-pen in four different sizes. Sam and his wife Alena previously planned to make the living artwork their permanent home in the coming weeks. The couple met on Instagram after Alena commented on one of Sam's videos prompting them to meet up in person in Berlin in 2018. Alena, who moved to the UK from Kharkiv, Ukraine in 2020, said she finds the monochromatic doodles 'calming' and even drives a doodled Tesla.

Cole Palmer is looking forward to linking up with Estevao Willian after seeing the teenage talent close up in Chelsea's Club World Cup defeat of Palmeiras. The highly rated 18-year-old winger scored a superb goal to cancel out Palmer's opener as Palmeiras pegged the Londoners back in an absorbing quarter-final encounter in Philadelphia. Chelsea eventually prevailed 2-1 – and set up a last-four clash with another Brazilian side in Fluminense – after Malo Gusto forced a late own goal but the impression made by Estevao was strong. Palmer, who spoke to and swapped shirts with his soon-to-be team-mate after the game, said: 'I just said we look forward to seeing you but he didn't understand that word I said! 'But, yes, he's a top player. Obviously, he's only young as well. When he comes to England, people need to give him time to adapt to the culture, the language. 'He's still only 18 or 19 but you can see he's got amazing quality and we look forward to seeing him.' Chelsea controlled much of the first half at Lincoln Financial Field and took the lead after a nice turn and finish from Palmer after 16 minutes. It was the 23-year-old's first goal for club or country in nine appearances and he ran to the touchline to celebrate with defender Tosin Adarabioyo, who was among the substitutes. 'That's my boy,' said Palmer of his fellow Manchester City academy graduate. 'Obviously, I've had a difficult time these past whatever months on and off the pitch, but he's always been there for me and he's helped me a lot. I just thought I'd go over to him.' Estevao levelled after 53 minutes with a superb strike from a tight angle but Chelsea snatched victory seven minutes from time when Gusto's cross took deflections off Agustin Giay and goalkeeper Weverton ended up in the net. Palmer felt the introduction of new signing Joao Pedro, who came off the bench to make his debut in the 54th minute, proved crucial. Palmer said of the £60million recruit from Brighton: 'I think he did very well. 'Obviously, he's been on holiday in Brazil and we didn't know what to expect from him (in terms of) match sharpness but I think he changed the game.' Despite being on the losing side, Estevao was named player of the match and his coach Abel Ferreira believes Chelsea have made a brilliant signing. The Portuguese said: 'I spoke with (Chelsea manager) Maresca (and told him), 'you bought an amazing player but, more than this, you bought an amazing person. You need to take care of him'. 'He is a player who can win a game alone with the dribbling, the shot. With new players and a new coach he will grow as a player and a person. 'In England the sun appears two or three times a year and the nights come early but Chelsea have the conditions to support him.'
