Umno postpones general assembly to November to focus on Sabah election

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: The 2025 Umno General Assembly, originally scheduled for August, has been postponed to Nov 26-29 in view of preparations for the upcoming Sabah state election. Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, in a statement, said the decision was made during the Umno Supreme Council (MT) meeting held at Menara Dato' Onn, World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur on Monday (June 30) night. The meeting chaired by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and was also attended by vice presidents Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, along with other supreme council members. In March, the Umno supreme council had initially set this year's General Assembly for Aug 20 to 23. The five-year term of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly is scheduled to expire automatically on Nov 11 this year, paving the way for the 17th Sabah state election. Additionally, Asyraf Wajdi said Umno will conduct a mid-term review of the effectiveness and performance of the Malaysian unity government, including the achievements of the Umno leadership within the administration, and in government-linked and affiliated agencies. Meanwhile, he said Umno sees no justification for parties in the unity government to absorb members from other component parties, in order to prevent misunderstandings and disharmony within the government. He added that the meeting also decided that the supreme council may consider any appeal submitted by members subjected to disciplinary action, in line with Clause 20.12 of the Umno Constitution. PM directs embassy to assist stranded Malaysian in Milan
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested the Malaysian Embassy in Italy to immediately assist Dalila Zaidi, a Malaysian citizen stranded in Milan after her passport was stolen. He said the Foreign Ministry has also been alerted to ensure appropriate action is taken to resolve the matter. Anwar was responding to a post by Dalila on X, in which she appealed for help after losing her passport. 55 vetted for free Rumah Kasih Johor homes
JOHOR BAHRU: A total of 55 candidates from various districts in Johor have been vetted to receive free homes under the Rumah Kasih Johor (RKJ) programme. Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Shukor said that 36 candidates would be supported, 18 rejected, and the remaining one would be suspended pending further evaluation. He said that candidates were selected during an RKJ selection committee meeting that he chaired today, with presentations by seven district offices – Batu Pahat, Mersing, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, Pontian, Johor Bahru, and Kluang. "The meeting is a manifestation of the state government's determination to ensure that selection is fair and based on the true needs of the public. "We cannot only view it from the administrative aspect, but view it with empathy and integrity so that the homes given can really be a ray of hope to those who have been neglected," he said, adding that the decision was made through consensus and based on strict criteria. Machap, Kota Iskandar, Johor Jaya, Tiram, Mahkota, Mengkibol, Paloh, Tenggaroh, Semarang, Seri Medan, Pekan Nenas, Panti, Pasir Raja, Johor Lama, Layang-Layang, Kahang, Penawar, and Kukup were among the state constituencies involved in the programme, and Kota Iskandar assemblyman Datuk Pandak Ahmad and Penawar assemblyman Fauziah Misri were also present at the meeting. The Johor government allocated RM67 million for the building of 500 free units under the RKJ programme, while in 2023, 50 units worth RM6.5 million were completed and handed to recipients, Mohd Jafni said. "This year, 165 units worth RM22 million are in the process of technical investigation and site visits, with the first building phase starting on May 15," he added.— BERNAMA

The youth wing's chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden argued that such a project represents a misplaced priority at a time when Malaysia is grappling with subsidy reductions and a worsening fiscal deficit. The initial phase of development, spanning 41.28 hectares in Precinct 19, is slated to commence in September 2025 and is projected for completion by the end of 2027. - Bernama photo Afnan cautioned the government against pursuing what he termed "vanity symbols" for the Prime Minister, urging fiscal prudence instead of new commitments. He highlighted concerns that the project, despite an estimated cost of RM4 billion, could incur a substantially higher financial burden if funded through a private finance initiative (PFI). The PFI model, he noted, has historically drawn criticism for potentially masking a government's true debt obligations in official records. Afnan called on the administration to disclose the precise cost of the project, including annual commitments stretching over the next 20 to 25 years. "What tangible benefits can the people expect, especially the younger generation who will inherit the weight of this debt? "Why is such a extravagant project being prioritised when funding for education, healthcare, food security and social welfare continues to diminish?" Afnan questioned in a statement today. The Alor Setar MP also raised objections to the involvement of Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petronas, as the project's primary driver. He pointed out that this comes at a time when the national oil and gas corporation faces declining profits, workforce reductions and increasing investment pressures across various sectors. "The government should be safeguarding Petronas, not transforming the company into a 'political ATM' to finance elitist projects that do not offer equitable commercial returns," Afnan added. Calling for an immediate halt to the Putrajaya government quarters project, Afnan demanded that a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis be presented in Parliament. "If the government insists on proceeding, it will become evident that the true purpose behind Kota Madani is not national advancement, but rather the pursuit of political ambition and the legacy of a particular individual," he concluded. On June 26, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the Kota Madani project, conceived as a smart city initiative designed to be people-centric and environmentally sustainable. Reports indicate the project will operate on a build, lease, maintain and transfer model, meaning the government will not directly bear maintenance costs but will pay through a long-term lease arrangement. The initial phase of development, spanning 41.28 hectares in Precinct 19, is slated to commence in September 2025 and is projected for completion by the end of 2027. This phase will comprise 10,000 high-density vertical residential units, designed to accommodate over 30,000 residents.
