Hodge finally takes over at West Virginia after leading North Texas into NIT semifinals

For a week after he was hired at West Virginia, new men's basketball coach Ross Hodge wore two hats.
Hodge stayed on as the coach at North Texas to get the Mean Green prepared to play in the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament, where they lost on Tuesday night to UC Irvine in Indianapolis.
With the transfer portal already open, Hodge also spent considerable time since his March 26 hiring getting familiar with the Mountaineers while working the phones to contact potential recruits. And while campus visits by prospective players along with in-person contact with them stops on Friday during the NCAA's one-week 'dead period,' Hodge said he will 'hit the ground running' after April 10.
'This is a blessing and this is an opportunity that I certainly don't take lightly,' Hodge said during his introduction at West Virginia on Thursday.
It was a more intimate welcome held in a small auditorium compared to predecessor Darian DeVries, who walked out to a much larger crowd at the team's basketball arena that included the school's pep band and cheerleaders when he arrived from Drake a year ago for his only season. DeVries was hired at Indiana last month.
Hodge did attend West Virginia's home baseball game against archrival Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. He got to see firsthand West Virginia's PG-rated rendition of Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline," which involves a not-so-nice chant aimed at the Panthers.
Hodge mentioned his no-cursing rule in practice because there are other ways to motivate people and said he enforces five pushups upon anyone who does.
"The Hodge household was doing about 500 pushups when we were listening to the Mountaineer version of 'Sweet Caroline,'' he said.
Then, less than six hours before Thursday's news conference, tornado warning sirens blared around Morgantown. Hodge said it reminded him of an analogy from his wife, Shelly, that he borrows as an approach to coaching. Shelly Hodge is a Maryland native and an instructor in yoga and Pilates, a series of exercises that in part helps improve flexibility.
'It's the flexible trees that survive storms,' Hodge said. 'The stiff, rigid trees, they break under storms. So you've got to have some flexibility. You've got to be able to evolve. And you can't be so stubborn in a certain way that 'this is how we're going to do things' outside of you are going to play extremely hard, we are going to play together. We're going to play for each other, and there's going to be a connectivity amongst the group.'
Hodge went 46-24 in two seasons as coach of the Mean Green, including 27-9 this season. While Hodge has no NCAA Tournament experience as a head coach, he's been part of staffs that went to three of them, including an upset of Purdue as a No. 13 seed in 2021. Hodge is credited as the architect of the North Texas defense, which had the nation's No. 1 scoring defense in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
This wasn't the first time Hodge had stepped on West Virginia's campus. He was with North Texas when it played at West Virginia's home opener in the 2020-21 season. The Mean Green couldn't hold onto an eight-point halftime lead.
On the day he took the West Virginia job, North Texas barely beat Oklahoma State in the NIT quarterfinals. There was an angst from West Virginia fans who had to wait another week for Hodge to arrive on campus, while also narrowly avoiding the disappointment from Mean Green supporters to the end of a season.
'I thought there for a second I was going to be the only coach in the country to get simultaneously crushed by two fanbases at the same time," Hodge said.
West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker was the AD from 2016 to 2022 at North Texas, where Hodge was an assistant for six seasons under Grant McCasland, now at Texas Tech. Baker said he was given rave reviews about Hodge both from McCasland and Michigan coach Dusty May, and that Hodge was clear in his desire to 'plant roots and embrace West Virginia.'
Now, he'll guide the Mountaineers through its third straight season of roster makeovers.
'He has great experience in rebuilding, retooling and reloading rosters,' Baker said. 'I'm pleased we found a coach that checked all of our boxes.'

How Marlins trolled Yankees just before sweeping them

Just when the Yankees' weekend from hell seemed like it couldn't get any worse, the Marlins' in-stadium DJ managed to pile on with one final jab. With Miami on the verge of sweeping the Yankees in the ninth inning of Sunday's game, the speakers at loanDepot Park blasted 'Sweet Caroline,' the Neil Diamond hit that is famously played at Fenway Park during each Red Sox home game. The Marlins sealed a 7-3 win shortly thereafter, marking the team's first sweep of the Yankees in franchise history. The clever troll job was perhaps also poking at the fact that the Yankees have now fallen 1 ½ games behind the arch-rival Red Sox in the American League East standings, with Boston surging behind its young core of talent. A clip of the scene went viral on social media, with Red Sox fans loving every bit of it. 3 The Marlins mascot brought out the brooms after Miami swept the Yankees. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'YEAH I LOVE THE MARLINS NOW,' one Boston fan wrote on X with a series of laughing emojis. 'Greatest thing I've ever heard in my life,' said another. 'Marlins fan base hasn't been this excited in 22 years!' added a Miami fan. After the game ended, the Marlins' social media team kept with the theme by posting on X: 'SWEEP CAROLINE! BA BA BAAA' 3 The Yankees have dropped into third place in the AL East. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect The Marlins, who have not been a serious contender in MLB for years, have become known for having a lackluster fan atmosphere at the cavernous loanDepot Park, which opened in 2012. But fans packed the stadium for Miami's sweep this weekend, with the team setting a series attendance record with a total of 101,545 fans at the ballpark across the three games. 3 The Marlins were all smiles during their sweep of the Yankees over the weekend. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect There were 34,601 fans in attendance for the 'Sweet Caroline' troll at Sunday's game — a blend of elated Marlins fans and disappointed Yankees fans. The Marlins took Game 1 of the series in absurd fashion with a shocking 13-12 win Friday night, and went on to a 2-0 triumph Saturday before Sunday's victory. The sweep moved the surging Marlins to .500 at 55-55 and six games back in the NL wild-card race.

Chunk Of Gold Sparkles In Gate-To-Wire West Virginia Derby Romp

Chunk Of Gold Sparkles In Gate-To-Wire West Virginia Derby Romp originally appeared on Paulick Report. Chunk of Gold, wearing blinkers for the first time, capitalized on a poor start by heavily favored East Avenue, both starters in the Kentucky Derby (G1) this spring, and led from start to finish in the Sunday's $400,000 West Virginia Derby (G3) at Mountaineer Casino, Resort and Races. Trained by Ethan West for owner Terry Stephens, Chunk of Gold won for the second time in his seven-race career after collecting three second-place finishes in graded stakes. He was the second choice at 2-1 in a field of eight in the 1 1/8-mile test for 3-year-olds. 'Winning this race means a lot,' said Jareth Loveberry, who has ridden the Preservationist colt in his last five starts. 'I rode at Mountaineer from 2009-2014. I met Ethan (West) here and we've known each other for 12 years. It's also my birthday today, which makes it extra meaningful. 'He's a very honest horse that tries every time. I was planning to be close early in the race, but when East Avenue didn't make the lead, we took his spot.' Chunk of Gold nursed a one-length lead over McAfee and Just a Fair Shake for more than six furlongs, then opened his lead turning for home to win by 4¼ lengths in 1:50.97 on a fast track. McAfee captured second, while Brotha Keny rallied well for third. East Avenue was fifth. The winner paid $6.80. 'It was fantastic,' West said of the colt's performance. 'All the credit goes to Jareth. He rode a great race. We had hoped to be close early, so we added blinkers to get him to be more responsive. But after the start, Jareth basically walked the dog.' 'It's exciting,' said Stephens, who had a large group on hand for the race. "He has run very well in graded stakes and it's nice to see him win one. I'm happy for the horse, the trainer and all the connections. I'm very proud.' Chunk of Gold was bred in Kentucky by late former Kentucky Governor Brereton C. was produced by the Cairo Prince mare Play for Gold. He was ninth, just behind eighth-place finisher East Avenue, in the Kentucky Derby after a trio of seconds in Derby preps: the Leonatus Jan. 18 at Turfway Park, the Risen Star (G2) Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds, and the Louisiana Derby (G2) March 22 at the New Orleans track. He entered Sunday's race off a runner-up finish in the Ohio Derby (G2) at Thistledown. The $246,400 winner's share of the West Virginia Derby purse elevated his career earnings to $695,218.
