NW OKC mall thriving with nearly full occupancy and new plans for pickleball courts
Pickleball and a family-focused restaurant and pub are set to bring the Shoppes at Northpark close to full occupancy at a time when enclosed malls are struggling with empty storefronts.
Restaurateur Matt Glenn said the new venue, Northpark Pickleball, will feature six courts inside that was once home to Northpark Cinema and six outdoor courts, including new green space, where surface parking now exists along the less visible east side of the mall.
The plans include a restaurant and bar that will be built out in space previously home to B.C. Clark Jewelers. Glenn is hoping to feature Roman style pizzas that can be ordered by the slice from anywhere in the courts. Wristbands will allow people to buy a range of mixed drinks and beers by the ounce.
'I went to Chicago and saw a lot of that. It's not something we really have here. This is all something we could really use here. I think this will up the game for the whole area.'

Kevyn Colburn, vice president of mall owner Tom Morris Enterprises, said the pickleball venue is being built out in the space that was the city's oldest movie theater when it closed in 2019.
'We talked to theater operators from across the country who had these grandiose ideas,' Colburn said. 'We got plans from a couple of different architects and theater guys and we were told it could cost $10 million to do what they recommended.'
Those estimates coincided with a a collapse in the movie theater industry during the COVID-19 pandemic — a downturn that has yet to fully end. The odds went up against reopening the theater, which started showing films in 1973.
The pickleball venue will bring life back to the center of the mall facing the east parking lot and will also include the space formerly home to B.C. Clark Jewelers until the store relocated to a more visible location facing May Avenue.
The inspiration for Northpark Pickleball started with Glenn looking for an indoor space to build indoor tennis courts.
'It's a crazy story,' Glenn said. 'My son plays tennis for Memorial High School. He has a coach who coaches outside and he didn't really have an inside court. I was walking around Northpark and thought I could just put it in one of these empty spaces. I told my wife and she said what that place needs is a pickleball court.'
Two years later, seats are being pulled from the former theaters and construction is getting started.
Colburn said the expansion of the pickleball courts, restaurant and bar onto surface parking being turned into green space on the east side of the mall is much easier to envision thanks to the success of The Hamilton, a restaurant operated by the same group that owns Cafe 7.
Previously, the west side of Northpark fronting May Avenue was far more visible with the majority of visitors chosing that side to enter the mall.

'The Hamilton changed everything on that,' Colburn said. 'When J. Mays (operator of Hamilton) called me, he said he was interested in the space that was S.J. Haggard because of the 'H' on the gate and that it could be done as a speakeasy. That's what sold him and it's been unbelievable. It's been a huge success.'
Mays said The Hamilton has not just survived along the less visible east side of the mall, but has thrived even after scraping by during the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic.
'We had a ton of support from the neighborhood,' Mays said. 'We opened in August of 2019, roughly four months before the world shut down. I feel like our location helped us during the pandemic because we're so close to the neighborhoods with the delivery scheme.'
Mays said he looks forward to the pickleball courts opening near the east side entrance to The Hamilton and the beautification that will come to that part of the property.
Mays' next venure at Northpark, meanwhile, is expected to bring occupancy up to 96% when it opens along with Northpark Pickleball.
Mays is looking to start renovations on the space last leased to Rococo on the north end of the mall to make way for Bush League Sports Tavern. The venue will include golf simulators and a patio.
'It will be a family-centered sports experience,' Mays said. 'Family-friendly food and drink, games, all the things that would make a family to come out and eat. There aren't a lot of places that cater to families, just places that have a kid's menu.'
Mays said after dealing with issues with financing the past couple of years, he is hoping to start construction this month with an opening later this year.
With Bush League, Mays envisions customers including high school teams who can make noise that won't bother others due to televisions playing an array of games. He is working with Smart Spaces to create eight zones of audio for different games to be broadcast with sound throughout the restaurant and bar.
'You might come out and find there is an OU game being place in one space and OSU in another,' Mays said. 'The hardest part is to pick which games to play and which ones not to play. I'm hoping to have an online calendar of games so people can plan out their visits.'

Aldrich Potgieter wins Rocket Classic on 5th playoff hole, outlasting Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk
DETROIT (AP) — Aldrich Potgieter ended the protracted Rocket Classic, making an 18-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to outlast Max Greyserman for his first PGA Tour title on Sunday. 'I finally got one to the hole,' Potgieter said after missed opportunities on the green by three players led to the longest playoff of the season on the tour. He celebrated by embracing his caddie and shaking hands with Greyserman and his caddie before giving his father, Heinrich, a hug. The 20-year-old Potgieter is the youngest player on the tour and its biggest hitter, averaging 326-plus yards off the tee. He became the ninth player to win for the first time this season. Potgieter was born in South Africa, moved to Australia when he was 8 and returned to South Africa at age 17 because the COVID-19 pandemic limited his opportunities to compete. 'We had to give up a lot, moving to Australia, moving back,' he said. 'Emigrating is definitely not the easiest thing. Coming alone at the start of my career to the States and giving it a grind, and having my dad here has helped so much.' Potgieter won the British Amateur at the age of 17 and became the youngest Korn Ferry Tour winner last year, paving the way for him to become the second-youngest player to earn a PGA Tour card through the minor league just after his 20th birthday. The youngest was Jason Day, who was 19 in 2007. Chris Kirk was eliminated after missing a 4-foot putt on the second playoff hole — that after pushing a 9-foot putt past the cup on the first extra hole with a chance to win. Greyserman and Potgieter each had opportunities to win end it on the 72nd hole at Detroit Golf Club, but couldn't convert on birdie opportunities to break a tie at 22 under with Kirk. 'This one's going to sting for a little bit,' Greyserman said. Potgieter, two strokes ahead entering the round, closed with a 3-under 69, and Greyserman and Kirk each shot 67. Greyserman missed a 12-foot putt and Potgieter came up short on an uphill, 42-foot putt. That set up Kirk with an opportunity to win it, but he couldn't take advantage. After Greyserman two-putted from 39 feet for par and Potgieter did the same from 20 feet, Kirk had a chance to win it with a 9-foot putt only to push it to the right of the cup to extend the playoff. The trio then went to the par-3, 158-yard 15th and Greyserman was the only one who was accurate off the tee and didn't take advantage. The trend continued on the par-4 16th, where both Greyserman and Potgieter missed 16-foot putts with a chance to win. At the par-5 14th, Greyserman hit is drive 361 yards — his longest of the week — and was just 2 yards behind Potgieter's blast. Potgieter hit his approach from 195 yards to 19 feet and he pulled his putt. Greyserman two-putted from from 29 feet for birdie. Back at No. 15 for a second time in the playoff, Greyserman two-putted from 34 feet and then Potgieter finally ended it. 'Just wasn't my time,' said Greyserman, who finished second for the fourth time after coming up short for his first PGA Tour victory. Collin Morikawa, meanwhile, is still waiting to end his drought. He shot a 68 to finish 19 under and in an eighth-place tie. The two-time major winner, who was the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 5 in the world, has not won the PGA Tour since October 2023 at the Zozo Championship in Japan. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, who rose to No. 7 in the world after winning the Travelers Championship last week, closed with 67 to tie for 41st at 12 under.

A's reliever Tyler Ferguson allows homer to Aaron Judge after saying he wanted to strike out slugger
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Tyler Ferguson graduated from Clovis West High School in Fresno when Aaron Judge batted .308 as a sophomore at Fresno State in 2012. Toward the end of last season after making his debut with the Athletics following nine seasons in the minor leagues, Tyler Ferguson said to a local TV station he wanted to strike out Judge about a month before the Yankees' final trip to Oakland. He finally had his chance Sunday. Ferguson was one strike away in his first matchup with Judge. Instead, Ferguson became the 260th pitcher to allow a homer to the slugger, who hit a two-run drive in the seventh inning of the Yankees' 12-5 win. 'I don't remember much honestly, unfortunately' said Ferguson, the only active player born in Fresno. 'I didn't go to a lot of Fresno State games, but I just remember him being a highly touted prospect and obviously a large human being very recognizable but it's impressive how he's continued to just get better and better as he's gotten older.' Ferguson got ahead in the count 1-2 with a sweeper before Judge fouled off a sinker and a four-seam fastball. After throwing a sinker and a sweeper out of the strike zone to get a full count, Judge hit the 31-year-old right-hander's 95.5 mph four-seam fastball into the A's bullpen in left-center. 'First time facing him, best hitter in the league,' Ferguson said. 'So I was looking forward to that at-bat. I was able to get ahead and then wasn't able to execute a couple of pitches and he was able to get it back to 3-2 and I didn't get the ball quite as high as I would have liked and he made a good swing on it.' "I didn't (know that),' Judge said of Ferguson's comment. 'I'm learning that as you told me.' Ferguson turned around and watched the 426-foot drive as YES Network play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco proclaimed: 'The King of Fresno." 'That's why you don't talk in public,' YES Network analyst and former reliever Jeff Nelson said on the telecast. 'You don't make a comment that I want to strike out Judge in public. You keep it to yourself.' Judge reached 30 homers for the fifth straight season and fourth time before All-Star break. He also became the sixth player in team history with six 30-homer seasons and the joined Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio as the third Yankee with six 30-homer seasons within the first 10 years of his career. Ferguson debuted with the A's May 7, 2024, but had made two scoreless appearances against the Yankees before Judge homered. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the sixth round in 2015 out of Vanderbilt, Ferguson never advanced above Single-A with Texas and spent 2019 playing independent baseball in Quebec. After being released by the Dodgers in 2020 when the minor league season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ferguson joined the Braves following a brief stint with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association of Professional Baseball. Ferguson reached Triple-A with the Braves, signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks after the 2022 season and spent 2023 with the Reno Aces. The A's signed him to a minor league contract in Nov. 2023 and called him up after 14 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. 'It was about nine, 10 years in the minors between when I got drafted to when I made my debut last year,' Ferguson said. 'So it was a long ride, but happy to be here and just trying to get better and trying not to give up (home runs) and make better pitches.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

CBS Sports ranks Harbaugh-Day feud among top coaching rivalries in the past 25 years
Everyone knows all about the great rivalries in sports -- Yankees-Red Sox, Lakers-Celtics, Texas-Oklahoma. But perhaps the greatest is Michigan football vs. Ohio State. While The Game had been a somewhat respectful affair, dating back to the Bo vs. Woody days, it's become increasingly hostile as of late. And the heat really turned up once Ryan Day took over the Buckeyes program from Urban Meyer -- who had gone 7-0 in his tenure against hte Wolverines. Day followed suit, winning in his first year, 2019. The two teams didn't play in 2020 due to COVID-19 hampering the maize and blue. But in 2021, when OSU considered it to still be its birthright to win The Game, Michigan upset the mighty Buckeyes and took away everything they thought they deserved that year. And the next. And the next. And the next. Well, Ohio State did win the national championship this year, but it cannot boast that it did so while having beaten its rival. CBS Sports put together a list of the greatest rivalries among coaches over the past 25 years, and Jim Harbaugh vs. Ryan Day made the cut -- mostly for obvious reasons. Ohio State beat Michigan 56-27 in Day's first year as coach, which propelled it to a Big Ten title and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. In Aug. 2020, during a private Big Ten coaches teleconference, Harbaugh reportedly interrupted Day while he was speaking to accuse Day of violating NCAA rules against early on-field instruction and drills during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a team meeting later that day, Day told Ohio State's players and coaches that the Big Ten better have a mercy rule because the Buckeyes were going to "hang 100" on Michigan in their next game. Ohio State and Michigan did not meet in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, and in 2021 Michigan cruised to a 42-27 victory, its first win in the series since 2011. After the game, Harbaugh was asked about Ohio State throwing shots at Michigan during its winning streak. "Let's move on with humble hearts. Take the high road," Harbaugh said. "But there's definitely stuff that people said that spurred us on even more. Sometimes people that are standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't." Ahead of 2022's installment of "The Game," Harbaugh told the Stoney & Jansen with Heather Show that his "third base" comment was in response to Day saying Ohio State was going to "hang 100" on Michigan. The Wolverines won in 2022, and again in 2023, before capping that 2023 season with their first national championship since the BCS era began. Those wins weren't without controversy, though. News broke in Oct. 2023 that the Big Ten was investigating Michigan for an alleged impermissible sign-stealing operation constructed by former staffer Connor Stalions. Initial rumors swirled that Ohio State tipped the NCAA off, and Day had private investigators looking into the issue. Day refuted his involvement. The NCAA later confirmed that neither Ohio State nor anyone associated with the Buckeyes are involved in its investigation. Harbaugh is actually on the list twice, as he also appeared on it for his rivalry with then-USC head coach Pete Carroll during his time at Stanford. Of course, this past win for the maize and blue over the scarlet and gray came under new head coach Sherrone Moore -- who also beat Day and the Buckeyes in 2023 with Harbaugh having been suspended due to the alleged advanced scouting scandal. Will the coaching rivalry carry over between Moore and Day? Moore is a bit more genteel than Harbaugh, but it kind of feels like that will still be the case.
