‘Address local issues before initiating new developments at Colva beach'
The Small and Medium Hotels Association has urged govt to address the long-standing issues faced by local businesses and the fishing community before initiating any new development projects at Colva beach.
'Colva beach, once known for its pristine charm that attracted people from all corners of Salcete, now lies in a state of neglect. This has led to a sharp decline in foreign tourist arrivals, particularly among the hippie crowd that once put Goa on the global tourism map,' Small and Medium Hotels Association vice president Dixon Vaz.
Vaz, who is also Cavelossim sarpanch, said govt's recent announcement to develop Colva beach under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme must be preceded by consultations with local stakeholders.
He said the local fishing community's concerns — especially regarding spaces for unloading and drying their daily catch — must be resolved first, with permanent solutions.
He said govt should discuss the proposed developmental plans with key stakeholders, including restaurant and shack owners, taxi drivers, water sports operators, the public and the local panchayat.
Vaz said he will also request the chief minister and the tourism minister to look into their grievances before proceeding with development initiatives.

Supplementary budget pegged under Rs 5,000 cr as govt adopts zero-based approach
Bhopal: The govt would present the first supplementary budget in the monsoon session of the state assembly to commence from July 28. First supplementary budget of the current financial year would be of less than Rs 5,000 cr. The supplementary budget this time would be lesser in comparison to previous year's supplementary budget. Reason for it was the govt, in this financial year, came up with zero based budgeting -- a budgeting technique wherein all expenses need to be justified for a new period or year starting from zero. The supplementary budgets presented for the financial year 2024-25 were of Rs 22,000 cr and Rs 19,000 cr respectively, which was much higher in comparison to the first supplementary budget of around Rs 5,000 cr likely to be presented next week. The finance dept stated the budget for the financial year 2025-26 was prepared based on the Zero-Based Budgeting (ZBB) approach, involving a comprehensive review of all expenditures. Outstanding liabilities from previous years were appropriately addressed and minimized through budgetary provisions in the preceding financial year. The depts have been directed to submit proposals for inclusion in the first supplementary budget within the set parameters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Butterworth: Beautiful New Senior Apartments with Two Bedrooms - Check Them Out! Heads for which financial assistance or central share has been approved by the govt of India or other agencies, which cannot be accommodated within existing allocations, and for which additional funding cannot be arranged by re-appropriating savings from other ongoing schemes. The finance dept made it clear that new heads that involve additional financial burden on the state will not be considered in the supplementary budget. Proposals for the purchase of vehicles will also not be entertained. Under the special capital assistance scheme, proposals sent or to be sent to the govt of India, which require the creation of a separate budget line. In cases where works approved under the special capital assistance scheme by the govt of India require additional budgetary allocation and such funds cannot be met from savings in other schemes, were the directives to all depts to submit proposals for inclusion in the first supplementary budget. These were underlined as few reasons by the officials why supplementary budget was expected to be lesser this time. The govt presented the state budget of Rs 4.21 lakh crore in March this year. The total debt on the MP govt has already crossed the state's yearly budget. MP govt has a loan of around 4.31 lakh cr. The govt is trying to adopt measures to streamline its finances, considering the state's financial health.
