Crime Branch team records statement of woman who was illegally detained by Peroorkada police

The Hindu03-06-2025
The Crime Branch on Tuesday commenced its probe in a case involving the illegal detention and alleged custodial harassment of a Dalit woman by the Peroorkada police following a false charge of stealing a gold necklace.
A team led by Pathanamthitta District Crime Branch DySP K.A. Vidyadharan recorded the statement of the complainant, Bindu R., at her house in Nedumangad. Expressing hope that the truth would emerge through the ongoing investigation, she demanded the probe be extended to the house owner, Kowdiar native Omana Daniel, who had filed the theft complaint against her.
Reiterated accusations
In her statement, Ms. Bindu is learnt to have reiterated her accusations against suspended sub-inspector Prasad S.G. and grade assistant sub-inspector Prasannakumar of subjecting her to unlawful custody and mental harassment. She added that she was held in custody at the Peroorkada police station for over 20 hours.
The Crime Branch will also collect statements from the house owner as well as the police officers who had investigated the case in its initial stages. CCTV footage from the Peroorkada police station will be thoroughly examined as part of the inquiry. Besides the suspension of the two officers, the Station House Officer was suspended after the issue had come to light.
Mr. Vidyadharan has been entrusted with the probe based on a directive issued by the Kerala State Human Rights Commission. The panel had instructed the Kerala Police to hand over the investigation to a police officer of the rank of DySP or above from outside the Thiruvananthapuram district for an impartial probe. The team has been instructed to submit its report by July 7.

Dalits will never believe BRS: AICC secretary Sampath Kumar

AICC secretary Sampath Kumar hit out at BRS MLA T. Harish Rao alleging that his statements on Kaleshwaram and water release by the government were incoherent indicating his frustration more than anything else. Speaking to reporters at Gandhi Bhavan on Saturday, Mr. Sampath Kumar said the government releases water based on need, in stages. It's a continuous, planned process. He asked Mr. Harish Rao not to play to the gallery by warning that he would go and release water from the projects if the government doesn't do so. 'When water is released based on the needs, Mr. Rao will claim credit, saying it happened because of him. This is political opportunism and nothing to do with reality,' he said. Targeting BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, Mr. Sampath Kumar wondered whether Dalits would believe the BRS party. 'Don't use Dalits as political tools. After 10 years in power, you have nothing to show except dismissing Dalit Deputy Chief Minister T Rajaiah overnight and using third-degree methods on Dalits protesting illegal sand mining,' he said. Unlike the BRS government, the Revanth Reddy government has four Dalit ministers, he said while accusing the BRS of diverting SC sub-plan funds. 'We have allocated ₹30,000 crore for Dalit welfare. That is the real difference.'

Parole Jumper In Shocking Double Murder Case Of His Daughters Captured After 4 Year Manhunt

Hamidullah, who had been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the murder of his two younger daughters and an attempt to murder the eldest, was apprehended on July 25 after evading arrest for four years. He had absconded after being granted parole, never returning to prison. The arrest was made under the close supervision of ACP Ramesh Chandra Lamba and the leadership of Inspector Satender Poonia. The operation was executed by a team including Inspector Sohan Lal Bijarniya, Sub Inspector Mukesh, ASI Vinay, and Constable Amit, following weeks of technical surveillance, manual tracking, and secret informant inputs. The horrifying crime occurred on the night of July 29, 1999, in Delhi's Old Mustafabad area. After the death of his wife, Hamidullah was living alone with his three daughters, while two older daughters were married. That night, he gave each of the girls capsules, claiming it was for stomach pain. The eldest daughter grew suspicious and faked swallowing the pill. Minutes later, her younger sisters began frothing and gasping for air. She ran for help, but both girls were declared dead at the hospital. Hamidullah had fled the scene but was arrested the next day. Convicted under Sections 302, 307, and 328 of the IPC, Hamidullah was serving his sentence when he vanished during parole. He had since been hiding in Loni, Ghaziabad, frequently changing locations to evade arrest. The Crime Branch's persistence finally led to his capture, ensuring justice catches up, no matter how long it takes.

Rahul Gandhi ‘can be second Ambedkar': Congress Dalit leader Udit Raj's appeal to OBCs gets ‘insult' retort from BJP

Congress leader Udit Raj's assertion that Rahul Gandhi could be 'the second Ambedkar' for OBCs has invited allegations from the BJP that he as insulted BR Ambedkar and the Dalit community. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, holds up a picture of BR Ambedkar during a recent event in Darbhanga, Bihar.(ANI File Photo) A prominent Dalit leader and a former MP from Delhi, Udit Raj in a post on X on Saturday appealed to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) to 'think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again'. He urged them to 'follow and support' Rahul Gandhi's recent assertions at a function at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium on Friday. "If they (OBCs) do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Udit Raj's post read. BR Ambedkar, apart from being a globally respected constitutionalist, is widely seen as a catalyst for positive change for the Dalit community into which he was born. Also read | My mistake we couldn't get caste census done earlier, says Rahul Gandhi What was Udit Raj talking about? Udit Raj, in his X post, was purportedly referring to Rahul Gandhi's commitment to a caste census, and his admission of not understanding OBC issues earlier. 'I didn't protect the OBC community the way I should have,' Rahul Gandhi said at the function. The OBCs are widely estimated to be the largest group in India, though caste data has not been collected or revealed since the 1931 census. Rahul Gandhi has been pushing for it in recent years, and the government has committed to counting castes in the Covid-delayed census now scheduled to begin next year. Insulting Dalits and BR Ambedkar, says BJP But the BJP took exception to Udit Raj's mention of Dalit icon and globally renowned constitutionalist Ambedkar. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said as per an NDTV report: 'Insulting Dalits and BR Ambedkar has become the Congress' identity... Who insulted the 'original' Ambedkar? Who did not bestow the Bharat Ratna on him? Who did not let his Constitution be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir? Who spoke about Muslim reservation? Who said reservation is bad... Jawaharlal Nehru.' He was further quoted as saying, 'They want to become a second Ambedkar, not Nehru or Indira Gandhi? This means the Gandhi family is admitting Nehru and Indira Gandhi were on the wrong path.' Rahul Gandhi in his Friday speech had claimed, 'As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work.' He listed the Land Acquisition Bill, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and Right to Food, and some others as 'things I did well'. 'But one shortcoming remained in the Congress party and my work: I didn't protect the OBC community the way I should have,' news agency ANI quoted him as saying. 'The reason is that I did not deeply understand the OBC issues at that time. Ten to 15 years ago, I understood the difficulties faced by Dalits. Their issues are visible, they are easily understood, but the problems of OBCs remain hidden,' he said. 'If I had known about your issues and problems at that time, I would have conducted a caste-based census right then. That was my mistake, which I am going to correct,' he promised.
