BELURAN: Villagers on Pulau Keniogan are one step closer to enjoying 24-hour electricity, as Sabah Electricity ramps up efforts to improve power supply on the remote island. The community, made up of some 200 households, currently receives electricity for 18 hours a day — an upgrade from the previous 12-hour schedule — following the installation of a new, more efficient diesel generator.
Advertisement Sabah Electricity Chief Operating Officer Ir. Ts. Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said the move was part of the utility's commitment to ensure equitable access to electricity for all, including rural and island communities. 'We've sent a new, more efficient generator to Pulau Keniogan to ensure a more dependable power supply,' he said. 'We are working towards 24-hour electricity. Our goal is to make sure that every Sabahan gets the best service and electricity supply possible.' Pulau Keniogan, located off the coast of Sandakan and accessible only by boat, is home to a Bajau-majority fishing community that has long depended on candlelight, kerosene lamps and small private generators to get through the night. Local development officer (UPPM) Lokman Madlis said the longer electricity hours had already improved daily life for many residents. 'Alhamdulillah, it now feels like we're not so isolated anymore,' he said. 'People here have freezers, some even have air-conditioning and Astro. With longer electricity hours, we can store our catch properly and send it to the mainland for sale the next day. This really helps our income, especially for those who depend entirely on fishing.' Community representative Kamarzaman Marof echoed similar sentiments, saying full-day electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity. 'We really need 24-hour supply because ice is crucial for the fishermen,' he said. 'Without it, it's hard to keep our catch fresh. Some of us go out to sea in the morning and only return late in the day. If the ice melts or there's not enough, the fish will spoil and we lose money.' He pointed out that many elderly villagers rely on fans or cooling appliances due to the heat, adding that 24-hour power would improve their comfort and health. Sabah Electricity is currently working with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) to complete a solar hybrid project on the island. Once completed, it is expected to provide long-term, clean and reliable energy to the village. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RANAU: Civil servants should be good at assessing and not simply implement instructions if they are not in line with the regulations, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Abidin Madingkir. 'My principle is that all instructions from superiors or the Minister will be implemented if the instructions are in line with regulations. But on the contrary, if they contradict regulations, of course, we will not implement them. 'I believe this is one of the cores of Malaysia Madani. 'Therefore, I call on all civil servants in Ranau district to be good at adapting to the situation and take an approach to accommodate the people in accordance with our position as a famous eco-tourism centre in the State of Sabah,' he said. SST is another blow for Sabah SMEs: FSI

Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) expressed concern over the recently announced Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope expansion effective July 1, cautioning that the move will further burden Sabah's SMEs and increase inflationary pressures within the state. FSI Treasurer Sylvester Chua Yong Pheng said Sabah businesses are already operating in a high-cost environment compared to Peninsular Malaysia, grappling with elevated logistics, operational, and infrastructure costs. The introduction of additional SST coverage at this point is expected to escalate the cost of doing business and ultimately be passed down to consumers. 'We welcome the Prime Minister's recent announcement to exempt apples and oranges from Sales Tax, which is a positive move for consumers. However, Sabahan businesses need more time to improve their operational cost structures before additional tax measures are imposed,' said Chua, in a statement, Saturday. Chua added that the situation is further complicated by the upcoming implementation of the two per cent Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions for foreign workers effective October 2025. While recognising it as a good initiative for worker welfare, he warned that it would immediately impact the manufacturing sector's cost management and cash flow position. 'The issue lies in the timing. Sales Tax is liable for payment upon the issuance of invoices, and October and November are critical cash flow months for manufacturers. 'Implementing SST with no delay alongside new EPF obligations will place serious financial strain on Sabah manufacturers. It's a good initiative but the timing is wrong,' Chua said. In view of these challenges, FSI urged the government to consider postponing the implementation of the SST scope expansion to Jan 1 2026, allowing businesses time to adjust and manage their operations more sustainably. Additionally, FSI appealed for Sales Tax exemption on the importation of essential raw materials such as plastic resins to ease manufacturing costs and reduce extra compliance obligations for SMEs in Sabah. 'We sincerely hope the government will take into account Sabah's unique economic challenges and extend fair transitional measures that support local industries in remaining competitive while adjusting to new tax and labour policies,' Chua said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MSMEs risk global supply chain exclusion without ESG

Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: Ewon listening to a participant at one of the booths. Kota Kinabalu: Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Malaysia must adopt environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices or risk being excluded from global supply chains, said Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said large corporations, including government-linked companies and multinationals, are increasingly making ESG compliance a key criterion in procurement and investment decisions. 'ESG is not just a trend, it is the future. It's not solely about protecting the environment, but also about responsible business conduct towards workers and society, along with transparent and ethical governance. 'Although ESG compliance is not yet mandatory, it is becoming increasingly urgent, particularly across both domestic and international supply chains,' he said. Ewon was speaking at the opening of the ESG Awareness Seminar for MSMEs in Kota Kinabalu, Saturday. Also in attendance were Universiti Malaysia Sabah vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor, SME Corp Malaysia Chairman Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok, and SME Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Rizal Nainy. Ewon said the seminar was timely in strengthening MSMEs' understanding of ESG and their readiness to implement it in day-to-day operations. He said the initiative also reflects the ministry's ongoing commitment, through its agencies, to foster ESG awareness and adoption among MSMEs. 'This is particularly important to enable MSMEs to integrate into the supply chains of GLCs and multinational firms, as well as to access international markets where ESG practices are increasingly a basic requirement,' he said. Ewon added that SME Corp Malaysia introduced ESG Guidelines for MSMEs early last year as part of efforts to raise awareness and build capacity among local entrepreneurs. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
