The stampede occurred around 3 am on Saturday at the Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgaon village, which is roughly 40 km from Panaji. The chaos broke out when thousands of devotees packed into the narrow lanes leading to the temple for the annual festival, overwhelming the area and triggering panic.
Lairai Devi temple President, Dinanath Gaonkar, hinted that chaos ensued after one devotee touched a light bulb with his cane stick, got an electric shock, and fell onto others nearby, according to a news agency ANI report.
'People in the crowd were pushing each other to get ahead in the crowd... Many of us villagers tried to stop them and resolve the issue. But these people were just not ready to listen to us. During this, some people went to a shop here, during which one person's beth (cane stick) touched a bulb, and he suffered an electric shock. He fell on other people, and that's how the stampede started,' ANI quoted Gaonkar as saying.
Six persons including two women were killed and more than 70 sustained injuries after the stampede. Five of them were on ventilator support, while the remaining were in a specially-created emergency ward at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). Among the injured, ten patients are reported to be in critical condition and are under observation at Goa Medical College near Panaji. (PTI)
Approximately 50,000 to 70,000 devotees, or Dhonds (followers of Lairai Devi goddess) had gathered for the procession, Lairai Devi temple President told PTI.
Director General of Police Alok Kumar, said that the devotees were standing on a slope, and 50 people fell on it, confining the stampede to that spot.
Earlier in the day, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said a magisterial inquiry will be instituted to investigate the incident.
The Goa government transferred District Collector Sneha Gitte, Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Bicholim) Jivba Dalvi, Deputy Collector (Bicholim) Bhimnath Khorjuvekar and Police Inspector Dinesh Gadekar with immediate effect, hours after the stampede.

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a second consecutive arrest in the case of killing of three Meitei women and three children in Manipur's Jiribam district in November 2024. The NIA arrested Lalrosang Hmar alias Rosang from Mizoram's capital Aizawl on Thursday, the NIA said. He is a resident of Assam's Cachar district, neighbouring Jiribam. The first accused, Thanglienlal Hmar, was also arrested yesterday from Aizawl by a joint NIA-Assam Police team. Lalrosang was an active conspirator in the crime; the NIA recovered a mobile phone and a SIM card from him, which will be examined, the NIA said. The arrest comes three weeks after the Manipur High Court ordered the NIA to give a report on the case, and three days after it ordered the NIA to file a chargesheet within a month. The members of the Meitei community who were kidnapped from Jiribam, a district bordering Assam, and whose mutilated bodies were found floating in a river days later, were Yumrembam Rani Devi (60), Telem Thoibi Devi (31) and her daughter Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8), Laishram Heithoibi Devi (25) and her two children Laishram Chingkheinganba Singh (2.5 years old) and Laishram Lamnganba Singh (10 months old). At that time, the Manipur cabinet in a resolution had called the suspects "Kuki militants". The arrested suspect, however, belongs to the Hmar tribe, a distinct tribe and not part of the Kuki nomenclature. The Kukis in Manipur along with the Zomi and Hmar tribes have been rallying behind the banner of "Kuki-Zo" since ethnic violence with the Meiteis began in May 2023. The women and children were kidnapped from Jiribam's Bokobera neighbourhood while another group of militants were engaged in a gunfight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Ten of the militants were shot dead in the encounter.

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis appeals for peace after communal tension erupts over objectionable post
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperation after communal tensions flared up in Pune district due to an objectionable social media post shared by an outsider. "We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace and no one should take the law into their own hands," Fadnavis said.(ANI) The remark came after a tense situation had arisen in Yavat village at Daund Taluka of Pune District following an alleged objectionable social media post by a local youth. Villagers took to the streets and a few youngsters attempted to vandalise a structure. A heavy deployment of Police personnel was made in the area. Police said that the incident occurred in the village a week ago, so the situation was already tense. Speaking to the media persons, CM Fadnavis said, "We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace and no one should take the law into their own hands. If anyone does so, the police will take strict action against them," he warned. The CM assured that the situation had been brought under control and peace was restored in the area. CM Fadnavis said, "I have just gathered information about the matter. According to it, a person from outside had posted an objectionable status, which led to tensions. People came out onto the streets, and in order to control the crowd, a lathi-charge had to be carried out. The situation is now under control. People from both communities are sitting together, talking, and trying to resolve the tension." "Some people deliberately post such statuses to create tension, but strict action will definitely be taken against them. Just because a gathering or event took place, does that give anyone the freedom to post such provocative statuses? No one has the right to make offensive remarks against any religion in this manner," he said. He dismissed the claims that the unrest was linked to a recent public gathering, saying, "So, to say that the tension arose because of a public gathering is completely incorrect. Someone said that this bakery belongs to Muslims. But the bakery belongs to us, and they (workers) are here on rent. Encounters breaks out in J&K's Kulgam
Security forces on Friday (August 1, 2025) evening engaged a group of hiding terrorists in a firefight in the jungles of south Kashmir's Kulgam. 'An encounter has started at Akhal area of Kulgam (in south Kashmir). The police's Special Operations Group (SOG), Army and CRPF are on job,' a police spokesman said. The number of terrorists hiding at the encounter site could not be immediately confirmed. The encounter comes just days after the security forces killed all the three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack in an encounter at Srinagar's Dachigam area. Friday's encounter also took place on a day when Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat and Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, V.K. Birdi, visited Kulgam. A police spokesman said the top brass visited the district 'to assess the security situation' They held an operational review with GOC Victor Force and other officers of J&K Police and Army. During the review, the DGP directed the officers to analyse and reassess the existing strategies and recalibrate the offensive operations to neutralise Pakistani terrorists. DGP Prabhat toured areas like D.H. Pora, Devsar and Kund during the tour. Meanwhile, three suspects were held along with arms and ammunition in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. Officials said a joint team of police, Army's 19 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF's 96 Battalion during routine checking at Krad Uttersoo stopped a Alto car. 'During searches, three suspects were arrested after one pistol, grenade and 41 rounds of AK-47 were recovered from their possession,' the police said. The police identified the suspects as Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat of Koel, Pulwama; Ishan Akram of Medora, Awantipora, and Waseem Rehman Sheikh, a resident of Medora Awantipora.
