Key suspect in Kim Kardashian Paris robbery 'dies suddenly' before trial
Baum-Gertner died aged 72 on March 6, according to Mail Online, in Paris' 10th arrondissement.
A cause of death has not yet been announced, but a source told the publication that his death was 'sudden.'
'Mr Baum-Gertner had been released on bail following his arrest over the Kim Kardashian robbery eight years ago and was living in Paris while regularly reporting to police,' the insider said.
'His name was on the defendants' list for the trial, and he was very enthusiastic about clearing his name in court.
'This was until he died suddenly in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on March 6.'
'He was suspected of liaising with mafia gangs from across the world over the Kardashian jewellery, and criminals are known to have issued threats against him following widespread publicity connected to the case.'
Nicknamed 'Rough Nose', he was part of a group of 12 people set to go on trial at the Paris Assizes court on April 28 for kidnapping and armed robbery, nine years after the crime took place.
In the early hours of October 3, 2016, while she was attending Paris Fashion Week, Kim was attacked in her room at the Hôtel de Pourtalès.
The terrifying attack was led by five armed men, posing as police officers, who tied up the socialite and locked her in the bathroom, along with the concierge.
They reportedly stole a jewellery box worth $6.7 million (£5.2million) and a ring worth $4.5 million (£3.4million)—both are believed to be her personal items. She also lost her smartphone during the attack.
Baum-Gertner was alleged to have worked with the gang that committed the robbery as a fence, responsible for finding buyers for the stolen goods.
Kardashian is set to attend the trial in Paris to face her attackers during the long-awaited trial.
In January 2017, 17 people, including Baum-Gertner, were arrested in connection with the robbery. Twelve people are currently on remand and set to face trial.
She recalled the experience on an episode of E! True Hollywood Story, which aired in 2019, saying the attack 'changed her whole life.'
'Right as I was about to fall asleep, I heard guys running up the stairs,' the mum-of-four explained. 'They wanted my ring and my jewellery, so I didn't fight back.
'I just gave them everything, and they tied me up.
'They wrapped duct tape over my eyes and my mouth. It was the scariest thing I've ever been through in my entire life, just thinking, you know, you're about to die.
'You're just kind of bracing yourself for the moment that they're going to shoot and kill you.'
Appearing on The Alec Baldwin Show in 2018, she said she was 'grateful' for the incident.
'I was never depressed, but I wasn't motivated to get up and work like I used to. It shook me,' she explained.
In 2021, Kim opened up to her sister Khloe about experiencing agoraphobia following the robbery. More Trending
Coming out of lockdown during the pandemic brought back the fears she had then, as she felt unsafe being outside and tried to avoid fans who approached her and estranged husband Kanye West in the street.
She continued: 'People were trying to come up to Kanye and talk to him. People were trying to come up to me and ask for photos and I was like, 'Absolutely not.' I would stop people and be like, 'Get away, this is my first time out. I'm not comfortable with you coming a step closer'
'I feel like I had agoraphobia, definitely, after my robbery in Paris. Definitely would stay in, hated to go out, I didn't want anyone to know where I was or be seen. I just had such anxiety.'
'Then I feel I was just getting back into it, we'd just gone to Paris, we just started travelling again, and then quarantine happened and I'm such a freak all over again and I never wanna leave.'

Fourth person found dead at beneath beauty spot cliff in just four days
A fourth person has been found dead beneath cliffs near Whitby Abbey in just four days. Emergency services were called to the iconic beach 11.01am today after reports a woman's body had been found found at Sandsend near Whitby Abbey. Officers later discovered the body behind the main cark park, below the cliffs. It comes after three other people have been found dead beneath the cliffs this week. A man and woman, believed to be in their 40s, fell to their deaths from 200ft cliffs behind Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening. Brian Vickers, 63, camping nearby, told MailOnline the path was 'extremely busy with walkers and dog walkers'. He said: 'I was told the couple who died were walking along the path. Another couple were coming the other way. 'The next thing we know is they jumped. It was absolutely horrific to see. The poor souls did not stand a chance. They fell straight onto the rocks below. 'The coastguard helicopter arrived in an hour and we witnessed the horrific scene of them being winched from the beach to waiting ambulances on the cliff top.' A woman aged in her 60s was also found dead by the cliffs near Whitby Pavilion on Thursday. North Yorkshire Police said: 'It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. 'Officers are supporting the woman's family at this difficult time. 'The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.' The force added: 'There are no connections between this sudden death, the sudden deaths of a man and woman below Whitby Abbey on Wednesday 30 July or the woman below Whitby Abbey on Thursday 31 July.' COPS are urgently hunting for the driver of a Kia after a 14-year-old boy was killed in a horror crash. Jacob Calland was riding an e-scooter which collided with a car in Wythenshawe, Manchester, back in March. The teenager spent eight days in intensive care before he succumbed to his injuries. Cops are urgently looking to speak to the driver of the car – a white 2015 onward Kia Venga - in relation to the incident. The driver is not a suspect in the investigation and officers only wish to speak to them to support their ongoing work, said Greater Manchester Police. Detective Constable Steve Pennington from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "This was a truly tragic incident that has devastated a young boy's family. "Our thoughts remain with Jacob's loved ones, and we continue to support his family as they navigate this unimaginable loss. An injured Ukrainian soldier was stuck behind enemy lines for days. He escaped on an e-bike airdropped by a drone
An injured Ukrainian soldier stuck behind enemy lines for days was rescued after being delivered an e-bike by a drone. A video of the dramatic rescue showed a UAV drone airdropping the 40kg bike down to the wounded man, who was surrounded by Russian forces, before he cycles away. The soldier's Rubizh brigade said three men were killed by enemy fire during a skirmish in Siversk, northern Ukraine, leaving the soldier on his own for five days. In a video the soldier, call sign 'Tanker', said: 'Our drones covered us from above as best as they could. Then they threw two gas cylinders straight into our hole and a lighter. We caught fire. 'Every day, I was surrounded, from all sides. I fought back as best I could.' Brigade commander Mykola Hrytsenko explained the challenges they faced in trying to rescue their stranded comrade. 'The enemy was in front, behind, and on both flanks, completely surrounded,' the commander said. 'It was impossible to drive up with equipment because the enemy was everywhere. He couldn't get out on his own either, because he had to walk 1.5km to the nearest position. 'In his condition, with his injuries, he simply wouldn't have made it.' The brigade then came up with the bold plan to deliver a vehicle to him by drone. The first two attempts to fly the bike in failed, with Russian forces shooting the first out of the sky and the second crashing. They managed to get the bike to the soldier on the third attempt - but his ordeal was not over yet. After fleeing 400m he hit a remote mine. Tank limped a further 200m with a leg injury before he was rescued. A second e-bike was then delivered, which he rode for 15 minutes to an evacuation point. 'To carry out this operation, they had to calculate the right time of day, the right weather conditions that would allow him to do it,' Cmndr Hrytsenko added. Reports of the rescue effort emerged after Vladimir Putin's forces launched a wave of missile attacks on the capital Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday, killing 16 people, including a six-year-old boy and his mother. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky urged his allies to bring about "regime change" in Russia following the attack. 'If the world doesn't aim to change the regime in Russia, that means even after the war ends, Moscow will still try to destabilise neighbouring countries," he said. "Today the world has once again seen Russia's response to our desire for peace ... Therefore, peace without strength is impossible," the Ukrainian president added.
