Andhra Govt Faces Heat Over 10-Hour Workday For Private Employees
The Andhra Pradesh government has raised the maximum working hours from nine to ten per day.
The Andhra Pradesh government, now under the TDP-led NDA alliance, has announced a controversial change in labour regulations, raising the daily work-hour limit from nine to ten hours. The policy now allows private companies and factories to extend employee workdays by an additional hour. The move has triggered widespread criticism and backlash on social media, with many questioning the impact on worker welfare and demanding a rollback of the decision.
According to a PTI report, Andhra Pradesh's Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Minister K Parthasarathy said the government decided to amend labour laws to make them more 'favourable' for both workers and investors.
However, people on social media expressed confusion and frustration, questioning how longer workdays could benefit them. The decision has also led to strong criticism from trade unions, who argue the policy prioritised corporate interests over employee well-being.

On social media, the response to Andhra Pradesh's decision to increase working hours has been overwhelmingly negative. Many users pointed out that the move seems to benefit business owners while burdening employees.
There were concerns that private companies might soon enforce the 10-hour schedule as a mandatory norm, severely impacting work-life balance.
'Good for financial growth. What about mental health? 10 hrs work, 2 hrs travelling, 8 hrs sleep — you have to do everything else in the remaining 4 hours," a user posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The sentiment was echoed widely, with many highlighting the toll on family life and mental well-being.
'Nine hours was already a stretch, and now they've added one more. Overworking employees has long-term consequences — people will have no time for family. AP's fertility rate is already declining, and this discourages people from having or raising children," another user warned.
Others on social media pointed out that working hours in many parts of India already exceed the global average of eight hours per day, and increasing them further only worsens the situation.
'The government is hand in glove with corrupt corporations that want to exploit cheap labour," a user alleged, echoing a common sentiment that the new policy serves the interests of big businesses rather than workers.
Many also questioned whether the extended workday would be accompanied by a proportional increase in wages. Dozens of users expressed scepticism, suggesting that employees would end up working longer hours for the same pay, effectively reducing their hourly earnings and adding to workplace exploitation.

CPI flays govt for sidelining people's issues
Alur (Kurnool district): Addressinga massive public gathering on Friday during the 12th State conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Alur constituency, CPI State Secretary K Ramakrishna strongly criticised the ruling dispensation for sidelining people's basic needs in pursuit of political gains. He lamented that several key irrigation projects in the region, such as Vedavathi, Nagaradam reservoir and Gundrevula remain incomplete, causing severe drinking and irrigation water shortages. Despite these pressing issues, the administration continues to focus on power politics, he said. Highlighting the deteriorating infrastructure, Ramakrishna pointed out the pathetic condition of roads in Madugula that get damaged even after a minor rainfall. He demanded lasting solutions to such civic problems. He also criticised the much-hyped 'Super Six' welfare schemes, calling them mere publicity stunts with major lapses in execution. Referring to the neglect of essential initiatives like the Jinkala Park wildlife project, he stated that the government's priorities were misplaced. He condemned the infighting within the TDP and the ruling party's failure to address people's issues, warning that the BJP-led government's support for corporate giants like Ambani and Adani poses a serious threat to democracy. Speaking at the same event, CPI-affiliated Ryuthu Sangham (Farmers' Association) State president Ramachandraiah and district secretary Giddaiah expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of farmers. They stated that the commercialisation of agriculture has pushed the farming community into a dark future. Due to lack of fair prices for their produce, mounting debts and insufficient access to fertilisers, seeds and irrigation, many farmers are forced into committing suicide, they said. They also pointed out the government's failure to ensure proper implementation of Minimum Support Prices (MSPs), which further adds to the financial stress on farmers. The leaders emphasised that farmers were being pushed into a debt trap as input costs continue to rise while yields remain low and market prices plummet. Instead of supporting farmers, they alleged, the government was backing corporate interests, which is deeply distressing. Criticising the BJP government for allegedly trying to privatise the agricultural sector for the benefit of Ambani and Adani, they called it a dangerous ploy against the rural economy. The leaders urged farmer unions to engage in intellectual resistance and continue their movements in support of farmers' rights.

'Unconstitutional tactics': US federal judge blocks ICE raids in California counties; Trump admin accused of racial profiling

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Attorneys general from 18 Democratic-led states supported the court orders, which came after a similar ruling in April that barred warrantless arrests by border agents in parts of eastern California. The ruling, issued Friday by Judge Maame E Frimpong, came after immigrant advocacy groups filed a lawsuit accusing US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) of detaining brown-skinned individuals. The lawsuit names three detained immigrants and two US citizens, one of whom was held despite showing valid identification. Plaintiffs claim agents targeted individuals who 'looked Hispanic' or wore construction work clothes. ACLU attorney Mohammad Tajsar pointed to a car wash raid where all but two white workers were detained. The lawsuit names three detained immigrants and two US citizens, one of whom was held despite showing valid identification. The department of homeland security denied the claims, calling them 'categorically FALSE.' Judge Frimpong's order also requires ICE to grant attorneys access to detainees, addressing concerns over denied legal representation. The decision comes amid growing protests in Southern California, where immigration raids have taken place at car washes, swap meets, and parking lots. Trump says he's ordered department of homeland security secretary Kristi Noem and White House border czar Tom Homan to direct ICE agents to use 'whatever means is necessary' to arrest protesters who assault them in the future.
