Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield Praises Rookie WR Emeka Egbuka's 'Ownership of the Offense'
After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first day of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, the players had a chance to answer questions from the media.

It's the first time many of the players have had a chance to work out with the rookies and the newcomers to One Buc Place.
While it's just one day, and chemistry and relationships still need to be manifested, quarterback Baker Mayfield says he's impressed with first-round draft pick Emeka Egbuka.
Mayfield was so impressed with Egbuka ahead of mandatory minicamp that he texted general manager Jason Licht to congratulate him on the pick.
He also spoke highly of Egbuka after Day 1 of Bucs' mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
"At this point, it's the physical tools, obviously, at this level, you have to have talent, and he has that, being a first-round draft pick," Mayfield said via JP Peterson of Fan Stream Sports - Tampa Bay. "The thing that sticks out is how cerebral he is. He's so smart. Right now, I think we could probably put him in any receiver spot. I think he understands the offense that well. He's not a rookie; he doesn't act like it, at least. It's been really good to see him take that ownership; he takes it extremely serious.

He's in constant communication. He always wants to be sure he's in the right spot at the right time. ... It's a nice luxury to have."
Egbuka could be thrust into a meaningful role in the offense sooner than expected if Chris Godwin hasn't fully recovered from his gruesome ankle injury suffered in Week 10 last year against Baltimore.
Godwin looks like he won't be ready to play the beginning of the year, and the combination of second-year wideout Jalen McMillan and Egbuka could help pick up the slack in his absence.

Coach Deion Sanders returns to Colorado after recovering from health issue
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has returned to Boulder after recovering from an undisclosed health issue at his ranch in east Texas this summer. Sanders, 57, announced it on social media July 25, just a couple of days before his team is due to report for preseason training camp. A school spokesman confirmed he is in Boulder. He also is scheduled to hold a news conference with his medical team in Boulder on Monday. 'Back and Feeling Great!' he said on social media site X. Sanders has a history of blood circulation issues in his legs that led to surgeries in 2023 and the amputation of two toes before that. But he hasn't revealed what ailed him since suffering the health setback in May and then missing several events in May and June, including a speaking engagement in Florida and Colorado's annual high school and youth football camps. Football recruits who visited in June were told he was out sick. He did appear at a Big 12 Conference media days event July 9 but declined to talk about his health. GONE FROM CAMPUS: Did Deion Sanders' absence affect Colorado's recruiting? What recruits said about it. He then recently left his ranch to visit his son Shilo at preseason camp for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on July 23. His eldest son Deion Jr. talked about the ordeal in a video he posted from the ranch on YouTube on July 22. 'I'm kind of sad,' Deion Jr. said of his last day at the ranch. 'I'm not gonna lie to you. I learned to really actually love this place. I really never stayed out here much. … It's not even just about being here. It was like the battle that was fought here. The battle that was fought and won here. That's like the main important thing. Boys didn't left the house for two months.' He called it a blessing and said details would be coming soon, as documented on video, much in the spirit of the 'Coach Prime' marketing machine. 'He's gonna tell y'all whatever he went through very soon, and I've got a lot of it recorded on video,' Deion Jr. said. 'So you'll be able to see what he went through.' Colorado opens the season at home against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. It will be Deion Sanders' third season at Colorado after finishing 4-8 in 2023 and 9-4 in 2024. But it will be a challenge after several top players left for the NFL, including his quarterback son Shedeur, safety son Shilo and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. Buccaneers training camp notebook, Day 3: Defense is hungry, Offense clicks
#Bucs S @ShiloSanders stayed after practice to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Everyone wanted to see him! The Bucs roster has reported to Tampa Bay, and as a result, they have started their journey into the 2025 season. It starts at home in Tampa Bay, but they hope it ends on the road in Santa Clara, where they have a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in five years. The worst part of football, especially during training camp, is waiting for injury updates as they occur or as players attempt to return from injuries sustained the previous season. In the case of the Bucs, they had to battle the injury bug more than they did any divisional opponent. It will make monitoring injuries throughout camp a big part of our coverage here on Bucs Wire over the next couple of weeks. After day three, plays continued to be made on both sides of the ball, with connections already beginning to emerge. Defense is "hungrier" in 2025 The Bucs defense took a beating in 2024, both in terms of their health and on the field in their pass coverage. They had one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL last season, and they knew they had to fix that if they wanted to contend in 2025. They are attempting to do that by both getting healthy and adding to their secondary in the NFL draft, and adding former All-Pro pass rusher Haason Reddick to the roster. Speaking with the media on Friday, another All-Pro defender, Antoine Winfield Jr., spoke about how the team is "hungrier" heading into the new season. Winfield said, 'Every year you obviously want to come in hungry, but we know we're so close to putting everything together. I think it's really setting the standard early.' Shilo Sanders is becoming Mr. Popular While he may just be a UDFA on the defense, Shilo Sanders has evidently already earned a cult following in Tampa Bay. The son of the Hall of Fame cornerback turned Colorado head coach, Deion Sanders, is enjoying his first training camp. He has had good marks spoken publicly by coaches about his performance, but now the fans are getting behind him as well. Jenna Laine shared that extra security had to be called in to make sure the crowd around Shilo Sanders was calm enough to stay for every signature. While the focus may be on his brother, Shedeur, in Cleveland, Bucs fans seem very happy to have Shilo in Tampa Bay. Rookie wide receivers continue to impress Emeka Egbuka has been playing well to start camp, to the point that Baker Mayfield is going out of his way to talk about how great the rookie wide receiver is. Egbuka has made acrobatic catches, showcased good body control, and remains elusive to the defense with and without the ball in his hands. That has been a constant all of camp, but now another rookie wide receiver is having a good day. Tez Johnson had a good practice on Friday and earned praise from Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield on Thursday before the breakout session. Mayfield said, "I think Tez Johnson is a guy that has a lot of potential. . .I think once we get the pads on, he is going to be really fun to watch." Quick hitters

Former Browns QB Baker Mayfield takes shot at former team amidst complicated QB situation
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield recently discussed his former team's quarterback situation on the podcast New Heights. The show, hosted by NFL stars Travis and Jason Kelce, covered the current state of the Browns' quarterback depth chart among other topics with Mayfield. When it came time to discuss the Browns' quarterbacks, Mayfield made it clear he no longer cared about the team's direction: 'I plead the fifth. When I was healthy, I was starting to get pretty damn good there. Not my problem anymore,' said Mayfield. The Browns moved on from their 2018 first overall pick for several obvious reasons. In his fourth year with the team, Mayfield had his worst statistical season, which resulted in only six wins and a very disappointing end to the 2021 campaign. He finished his final year in Cleveland with a 63.6 PFF grade, ranking 40th among all eligible NFL quarterbacks. When it was time to decide between extending a well-known, declining quarterback or making a change, Cleveland opted to pursue other options. The end of Mayfield's time in Cleveland came with the official announcement of the Browns acquiring quarterback Deshaun Watson via trade. While many fans felt this was the wrong decision, the team was not in a position to risk more time with Mayfield—especially if he was seeking a large contract extension. Instead, the Browns continued their search for a franchise quarterback.
