‘Welcome and vibrant' Co Down spot named NI ‘pub of the year'

The Plough Inn in Hillsborough picked up the award, while also being nominated for Gastro Pub of the Year, at the Licensed & Catering News (LCN) Awards.
The venue was previously owned by the Patterson family for close to 45 years before being sold to Dormans Hospitality Group (DHG) in November 2023.
Speaking after winning the award, Ryan McGlone, commercial director at DHG, said: 'We are absolutely thrilled to receive this much-coveted award.
'For many people, the Plough in Hillsborough represents the epitome of what they look for in a welcoming, local hospitality venue.
'In the relatively short time the Plough has been part of DHG, we have been able to enhance the customer experience even further and we are delighted to accept this prestigious accolade.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, the judges paid tribute to the Plough's offering for guests: 'This award celebrates pubs that create inviting atmospheres and deliver outstanding customer experiences.
'The judges' mystery guest praised the Plough Inn for its warm welcome, vibrant and well-appointed space, a well-stocked bar and helpful, engaging and professional staff.'

Petula Martyn has been appointed as RTÉ's new Mid West correspondent. RTÉ News announced the appointment on Tuesday, July 22nd. Her role will cover Ireland's Mid West region, including the counties of Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary. Advertisement Ms Martyn will be reporting and providing analysis across RTÉ News platforms on social, economic, cultural and political developments. Having joined RTÉ News in 2011, Ms Martyn worked as a multimedia journalist across television, radio and online platforms. She currently presents business news on Morning Ireland, the One O'Clock News, and Drivetime. She has also presented some of the state broadcaster's flagship radio programmes, including Morning Ireland, This Week and The Business, political party conference coverage and for RTÉ Sport during the Olympic Games. Advertisement Ms Martyn is said to be a "passionate Limerick hurling supporter," having reported on the county's All-Ireland successes, including a RTÉ Radio One documentary, Limerick: Pure Proud. She has also reported on general elections from the Mid West, as well as the election and inauguration of the first directly elected mayor. Ms Martyn began her journalism career in the Mid West, reporting for Limerick's Live 95FM and later as a journalist with the Limerick Leader. "Having grown up, studied, and started my journalism career in the region, I am delighted to return to take up the role of Mid West Correspondent," Ms Martyn said of her appointment. "I'm looking forward to covering the stories that matter to the people of Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary, including challenges in healthcare, housing, infrastructure, as well as cultural events and no doubt, sporting triumphs. I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to continue the great work that Cathy Halloran did for over 30 years. I care deeply about this region and its people." Engineering projects in Bradford have won several top awards at a regional Live and the city centre pedestrianisation were recognised at the Yorkshire & Humber Constructing Excellence awards, which took place at the Royal Armouries in pedestrianisation scheme won Infrastructure Project of the Year and the Best of the Best award, while the refurbished former Odeon, officially due to open in August, won the Conservation and Regeneration two winning projects will now compete in a national awards ceremony later this year. Bradford Live beat other projects including two from Bradford in the same category: Darley Street Market, and Shipley Sustainable Community Hub, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) also faced non-Bradford projects including the refurbishment of Hull's Maritime Museum and Leeds City College's Mabgate Bradford projects were funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority's Transforming Cities Fund and run by construction firm Balfour work to re-open Bradford Interchange after a year-long closure, carried out by the construction firm, was shortlisted and highly commended in the Integration and Collaborative Working Award. The awards celebrate the built environment and construction industry and are organised annually by Leeds Beckett University's School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing. July 16 (Reuters) - Canada is open to considering limits on softwood lumber exports to the U.S. to try to ease some trade friction between the neighboring countries, British Columbia Premier David Eby told Bloomberg News in a report published on Wednesday. "One of the asks for years out of the American coalition has been a quota — that there's a fixed amount of lumber that gets to come from Canada," Eby told Bloomberg News. "And I think that, for the first time, there's some willingness to have a conversation about what that could look like."
