Twitch streamers receive death threats during live stream on Santa Monica Pier

Independent07-03-2025
Three popular Twitch streamers managed to flee a stalker who threatened to kill them before chasing them along Santa Monica Pier in California while they were in the midst of a livestream.
Cinna, 28, Valkyrae, 33, and Emiru, 27, who are watched by millions on a range of social media platforms, were hosting a week-long marathon stream in California on Sunday evening.
Things took a bad turn when a man suddenly became persistent, demanding one of the girl's phone numbers, and started issuing threats when she refused, despite innocently posing for a selfie moments before.
The Santa Monica Police confirmed they were investigating the chilling incident after it was captured on one of the online star's livestreams.
'Let's take a picture', the man suggests, while the three streamers laugh and pose for the photo. One of the girls is then heard candidly remarking how 'sweet' the fan was.
Later, the young man, who changed into a new outfit at this stage in the stream, then asks for Emiru's number.
She quickly reacts, telling the man, 'I don't have a phone' and begins nervously walking away.
The man persists and asks her to put her number into his phone.
A panicked Emiru, real name Emily Schunk, says: 'I don't know how to use a phone – I'm sorry!'
But the man, who introduced himself as Russell, fails to acknowledge the rejection and states: 'Wait, wait, wait – I'm just going to keep following her.'
At that point, Cinna interjects, screaming to the man: 'You're going to have to get in line, there's too many stalkers!'
Brittany Lynn Watts, who goes under the moniker of Cinna, has nearly 600K followers on Twitch, was named best female streamer at the Streamer Awards last year.
The girls frantically start running away and 'Russell' is heard yelling: 'I'm going to kill you right now.'
Valkyrae, real name Rachell Marie Hofstetter, revealed they had informed Santa Monica police of the incident, who confirmed reports of an individual who had issued threats, according to the BBC.
The suspect reportedly managed to flee the pier and investigators are looking into surveillance and witness statements to understand 'the total picture', said Lt. Lewis Gilmour to Fox11 Los Angeles.
Speaking about the incident, a day later on X, Valkyrae, also revealed that the stalker 'reached into his pockets multiple times' prompting her to run.
She added: 'I'll never be out without a taser/pepper gun ever again, I'll never joke about being strong enough to handle being attacked again, and I'll always take threats like this seriously.'
In a statement Monday, Cinna described the ordeal as terrifying. 'We're very much in shock [...] that does not do it justice for how scary it was', she added.
According to the Department of Justice in 2023, statistics show that one in three women face stalking in their lifetimes – a statistic that is half as high for men.

‘Why are we only seeing this?' – Fans left fuming at bungling BBC's broadcast of Wimbledon

FANS fumed at the bungling BBC's Wimbledon broadcast - which cut away from showing the tennis for more than THREE MINUTES. Dan Evans took on Novak Djokovic on Centre Court in round two. 7 Dan Evans took on Novak Djokovic on Centre Court Credit: BBC 7 The BBC cut away from the action to show an empty studio Credit: BBC 7 Cameras then went to fans sat on Henmann Hill for more than two minutes The Brit served to stay in the set at 5-1 down. But after missing his first serve on the opening point, the TV cameras bizarrely cut away. For about one minute, an angle thought to be from the BBC studio showed a chair in the foreground and a blurry image of the walkways around the All England Club. Then for nearly two-and-a-half further minutes, live footage of tennis fans enjoying the afternoon sunshine on Henman Hill filled the screen. And it was not until the end of the changeover - three minutes and 23 seconds after cutting away from the match - that the BBC went back to the live feed from Wimbledon's main show court. It is understood both BBC One and BBC Two were hit by the error, which was not addressed on air by the commentators. Viewers trying to watch Evans battling against Djokovic blasted the Beeb's blunder. Really poor." A fourth complained: "I mean the coverage has been absolutely terrible. Moving court coverage around without any reason, not showing the Brits, not saying what is on iPlayer. Now we have a fantastic showing of Henman Hill with no tennis. Just give up guys." The mistake comes two days after British tennis fans were unable to watch the start of Jack Draper's opening match of the tournament. The BBC News was on at 6pm - just as Alexander Zverev was playing a crucial tie-break on Centre Court. So BBC bosses opted to stick with the tie-break before switching over to Draper. Elsewhere, the broadcasters were mocked for their hilariously big microphone given to Iga Swiatek for her radio interview. But on a more serious note, reports this week suggest the BBC face a battle from TNT Sports and Sky Sports to retain the rights for Wimbledon beyond their current deal which runs until 2027. 7 After nearly three-and-a-half minutes, the feed eventually returned to Centre Court 7 Evans lost in straight sets to the seven-time champion Credit: Reuters

Gavin and Stacey home up for sale and it's changed so much

The house in Barry was home to Doris before the character passed away and left the home to Gavin and Stacey in her will Superfans of the beloved BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey have a chance to snap up an iconic piece of the show's history, as Doris' house from the series is now on the market. The terraced property that served as a home for the much-loved character, cheeky pensioner Doris, is now for sale. ‌ Located on Trinity Street in Barry, Wales, it sits right next door to where Stacey's family lived on the show and is surrounded by familiar sights featured throughout the series, which concluded with a festive special last Christmas. ‌ Following the passing of Margaret John, the actress who portrayed Doris, in 2011, the series paid tribute by having her character also pass away, leaving her home to Gavin and Stacey in the storyline. Doris remained a fond memory in the show, even being mentioned in the finale years later. The property, listed by Chris Davies Estate Agents, boasts two bedrooms and spans 969 square feet. It's conveniently situated within walking distance of Barry train station and the docks. A TikTok video offers a glimpse inside the updated house, showcasing an open-plan living and dining area, alongside a contemporary kitchen. The first floor reveals two cosy bedrooms and a family bathroom. The outdoor space features decking and a synthetic lawn, described by the estate agents as "a seaside gem full of warmth and character." ‌ Priced at £220,000, the full listing details are available for viewing here. Gavin & Stacey fans were quick to comment, with one joking: "Smithy did a great job on that bathroom!" Another referenced the series, saying: "I'm so pleased to see Stacey got her new kitchen cabinets in the end." There were even some creative ideas for the future homeowner: "Would make a great Gavin and Stacey museum or air bnb. Would make a killing," suggested one fan.

BBC will no longer live stream ‘high risk' music acts after Bob Vylan incident

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The BBC has said it will no longer broadcast performances deemed "high risk" live after controversy over punk rap duo Bob Vylan's appearance at Glastonbury. In a statement issued on Thursday the corporation apologised for the group's "deplorable behaviour" after frontman, Bobby Vylan, whose real name is reportedly Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, led crowds in chants of "death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)" during their set on Saturday afternoon. The BBC admitted it had assessed the act as "high risk" before Glastonbury but deemed them suitable for live streaming. The broadcaster said this was "clearly not the case", adding it was changing its procedures around live music events meaning any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live. The statement said: "We deeply regret that such offensive and deplorable behaviour appeared on the BBC and want to apologise to our viewers and listeners and in particular the Jewish community. We are also unequivocal that there can be no place for antisemitism at, or on, the BBC. "It is clear that errors were made both in the lead-up to and during Bob Vylan's appearance. We think it's important to set out some of the detail around the streaming of this performance. "Bob Vylan were deemed high risk following a risk assessment process applied to all acts appearing at Glastonbury. Seven acts including Bob Vylan were included in this category and they were all deemed suitable for live streaming with appropriate mitigations. "Prior to Glastonbury, a decision was taken that compliance risks could be mitigated in real time on the live stream – through the use of language or content warnings – without the need for a delay. This was clearly not the case." It added: "Given the failings that have been acknowledged we are taking actions to ensure proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast. We will not comment further on those processes at this time. "Furthermore, as a result we will make immediate changes to live streaming music events. "Any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live." The BBC has also promised to take action to "ensure proper accountability" and issued an apology to viewers, especially the Jewish community. BBC director-general Tim Davie has also issued a personal apology, asking people to treat each other with "respect and kindness". He said: "I deeply regret that such offensive and deplorable behaviour appeared on the BBC and want to say sorry – to our audience and to all of you, but in particular to Jewish colleagues and the Jewish community. "We are unequivocal that there can be no place for antisemitism at the BBC. I and everyone need to ensure that the BBC is a role model for inclusivity and tolerance and we all have a part to play. We are utterly committed to creating an environment where everyone is supported and can do their very best work. "Please continue to treat each other with respect and kindness." Since the performance, Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation into the comments made during the group's West Holts Stage set. It has emerged that the group were already under investigation by police for comments made at a concert one month before Glastonbury. Video footage appears to show Bobby Vylan at Alexandra Palace telling crowds: "Death to every single IDF soldier out there as an agent of terror for Israel. Death to the IDF." The rap group issued a statement on Tuesday claiming they were being "targeted for speaking up" after Avon and Somerset Police began its investigation. The group have also had their US visas revoked, ahead of their tour later this year, were pulled from their Saturday headline slot at Radar festival in Manchester and from an upcoming performance at a German music venue. Bob Vylan are expected to perform at the Boardmasters surfing and music festival in Newquay, Cornwall, in August. The group is known for addressing political issues in their music including racism, masculinity and class.
