Evidence presented in court indicated that the sexual abuse occurred between October 2021 and February 2022 in Rantoul.
The Rantoul Police Department began to investigate Joshua Nibbe in April of 2022 after the child's mother had reported that her child had been sexually abused by Nibbe. The child was 11 at the time of disclosure, but the abuse had been going on since the child was 10 years old.
The State's Attorney's Office filed criminal charges on June 22, 2022. Nibbe was arrested on June 29, 2022 and has been in custody at the Champaign County Correctional Center since.
Predatory criminal sexual assault is a class X felony and carries between 6 to 60 years in prison. Since Nibbe was found guilty on two counts, Rietz said he will serve his sentences one after the other, rather than at the same time.
