The Chicago Cubs are loaded with talent, but they're expected to acquire more talented players before the trade deadline.
If the Cubs are going to go trade for two or three players to add to the active roster, they're also going to have to cut a few players on the team right now. While this is typically a tough decision, the Cubs have an obvious candidate to be designated for assignment: utility man Vidal Brujan.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Cubs would cut ties with Brujan in the coming weeks, too.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: A detail of a Chicago Cubs logo on a helmet against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on June 08, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan."Small sample, sure, but Brujan has been on the active roster since mid-April when he was activated off the IL and has started a total of six games," Rotman wrote. "Yes, he's essentially started two games per month for half the season, which is absurd. For the most part, he's either entered a game as a defensive replacement, a pinch-runner, or as a pinch-hitter in a blowout.
"Brujan can play a variety of positions, which is valuable, but what else does he offer? He has a .389 OPS this season and a .522 OPS in parts of five MLB seasons, so he can't really hit. He's known for having good speed, but he's stolen only 16 bases in 30 attempts in his career, has gone 2-for-3 this season, and ranks in the 42nd percentile in sprint speed according to Baseball Savant."
The Cubs acquired Brujan in a trade during the offseason, but it never really made much sense. He doesn't excel at anything, and Chicago's lineup is way too loaded with talent for Brujan to ever earn any regular playing time.
Cutting him seems like the obvious move. He's likely going to be the first player to go from the roster when the Cubs begin making their big trade deadline acquisitions that everybody seemingly expects them to make.

MLB AL Rookie of the Year Prediction: Odds, expert picks, including Cam Smith, Jacob Wilson, Roman Anthony

The American League Rookie of the Year race looked all but locked up by the A's Jacob Wilson entering June, but after a monster month, Cam Smith of the Astros has entered the chat. Wilson is a -110 favorite at BetMGM whereas Smith is +105. Wilson's teammate, Nick Kurtz hangs around at +550 and the No. 1 prospect in the MLB right behind him. I have a 0.5 unit bet on Boston's Roman Anthony (No. 1 prospect) at +1200 odds and he still roams around that number, but his production doesn't rival Smith's. While a case could be made for Wilson as he ranks second in the MLB with a .335 batting average, or Anthony because he is raking .345 to start July after hitting .210 in June, or maybe even Kurtz who has 14 homers, including nine over the last month! However, this is becoming Smith's award to lose and he's setting himself apart from the field in more ways than just his hitting. American League Rookie of the Year: Cam Smith (+150) Cam Smith is a former No. 14 overall pick of the Cubs last year, but he was a part of the trade that sent Kyle Tucker from Houston to Chicago — so Smith is living up to his expectations as a part of that deal — as much as he can anyway. No player among the top eight in the AL Rookie of the Year race has increased their odds more than Smith -- who was 80-to-1 entering the season at BetMGM! That's because Smith has raised his batting average almost every month as seen below. .125 in March (8 AB) .224 in April (67 AB) .307 in May (75 AB) .303 in June (89 AB) .350 in July (40 AB) Entering the July 9th games, Smith is batting .343 over the last seven days and .348 in the past 30 days, so he's stayed hot and has 21 multi-hit games on the year. The potential impact of being a star player has been shown. He has seven home runs, a .287 batting average, 2.3 WAR, 38 runs scored, 80 hits, and 39 RBIs, which the latter two rank second among all rookies. However, he's made a significant splash on defense to the point where managers and experts are claiming he will be a gold glover. There are stats to back that up to. According to the Outs Above Average metric at Baseball Savant and the Fielding Bible's Defensive Runs Saved stat, Smith ranks second out of all right fielders to in Outs Above Average with four (ranks behind Fernando Tatis Jr.) and second, again, with 9 Defensive Runs Saved (trails only Adolis Garcia). Smith is a dynamic two-way player, and once Jacob Wilson's batting average drops below .300 in the second half of the season, Smith will overthrow him as the favorite — some markets even have the two tied or a 5 to 10-cent difference per dollar, so time is running out to get involved with Smith. I played Cam Smith at +150 to win AL ROY and would go down to -110 odds for 2 units. He is +100 or better everywhere as of July 9. I still like Roman Anthony as a 0.5 unit bet at +1000 or better as well. Good afternoon, Chicago. The U.S. is having its worst year for measles spread in more than three decades, with a total of 1,288 cases nationally and six months left in 2025. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today that the national case count surpassed 2019, when there were 1,274 cases for the year and the country almost lost its status of having eliminated the vaccine-preventable illness. That could happen this year if the virus has nonstop spread for 12 months. Here's what else is happening today. MLB Insiders Advocate Cubs Pursue Royals' $38 Million Pitcher at Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are going to be adding starting pitching at the trade deadline, and they are looking at a variety of options. There will be a lot of options for the Cubs to choose from, and Tim Britton, Aaron Gleeman and Chad Jennings from The Athletic see a connection between the Cubs and Kansas City Royals starter Seth Lugo. KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 08: Starting pitcher Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals pitches during the third inning of the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Kauffman Stadium on July 08, 2025... KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 08: Starting pitcher Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals pitches during the third inning of the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Kauffman Stadium on July 08, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri. More"Lugo had a breakout season in 2024, pitching more than 200 innings with a 3.00 ERA and finished second in AL Cy Young Award voting," they wrote. "Now 35, his surface-level numbers are almost identical this year. The pitch and batted ball data suggest he's not been as good as a year ago, but Lugo has remained plenty effective. He has a player option for 2026 he's unlikely to exercise barring injury, meaning the right-hander should be considered a rental." The last part there is the key to the Cubs pursuing Lugo. If he's considered a rental, that means Chicago won't have to send as much back to Kansas City. This could, in turn, then help the Cubs add even more at the deadline. Lugo's advanced metrics will draw some concerns, but Jed Hoyer is going to be more concerned about his ability to help the team win games. He's giving the Royals a chance to win every time he takes the mound, and that is what the Cubs will want from him. Chicago was listed as one of three fits for Lugo with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres also on the table. If the Royals fall even farther out of the playoff race, expect Lugo to be dealt.
