Kerala Crime Branch questioned Union Minister Suresh Gopi as part of Thrissur Pooram ‘disruption' probe
However, CB officials averred that the agency preferred to keep the time or where they questioned Mr. Gopi confidential for now, given the politically sensitive nature of the investigation.
The Thrissur Pooram controversy took on political overtones as it dominated the campaign narrative in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Mr. Gopi found himself at the centre of the dispute after he rode in an ambulance, allegedly flashing its overhead lights and sounding the siren, to the festival office, which the police and district authorities had declared off-limits for vehicles and civilians on the night of the iconic fireworks.
Seva Bharathi, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), owned the ambulance. Subsequently, the police and the Motor Vehicles department (MVD) booked Mr. Gopi and the operator on the charge of misusing an emergency response vehicle for casual transport.
Mobile phone videos of Mr. Gopi parleying with apparently distraught Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms went viral on conventional and social media in the run-up to the poll day on April 26, 2024.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition quickly accused the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) of throwing the Thrissur Lok Sabha poll to Mr Gopi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the constituency, by 'wilfully scuttling Thrissur Pooram to stoke Hindu majoritarian religious sentiment among voters.'
Mr. Gopi's opponent, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader V.S. Sunilkumar and Congress' standard-bearer in the constituency, K. Muraleedharan, accused the State police of allowing the BJP candidate to gain political mileage by emerging as a champion of Thrissur Pooram lovers, a significant electoral bloc in the constituency.
The alleged disarray in the conduct of the festival had caused considerable disquiet among the mammoth festival crowd and the general public, prompting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to order a three-tier investigation last year.
Subsequently, the CB formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the cognisable offences detailed in the preliminary police enquiry report about the festival 'disruption'. The SIT will likely submit its report to the Additional Director General of Police, Crime Branch, H. Venkatesh.

Indian Muslims hostages, not citizens: Owaisi on Kiren Rijiju's minorities remark
A war of words erupted on Monday between All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju over the latter's assertion that minorities in India enjoy more benefits and protection than the majority it "rights, not charity", Owaisi lashed out at Rijiju, accusing him of acting like a monarch and dubbing him the "Minister Against Minorities". Intensifying his attack, Owaisi said that Indian Muslims were no longer citizens of the country but hostages. advertisementRijiju shared an excerpt of his interview with the Indian Express on X, in which he said, "INDIA is the only country where the minorities get more benefits and protections than the majority community." He claimed that the PM Modi-led government had championed the principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas', enabling minority communities to be equal participants in India's growth story. Rijiju went further, saying, "The main point we have to understand is that minority communities are receiving more funds and support from the government than the majority community... i.e., the Hindus."Owaisi fired back swiftly, saying, "You are a Minister of the Indian Republic, not a monarch. You hold a constitutional post, not a throne. Minority rights are fundamental rights, not charity."He added that being called names like Pakistani, Bangladeshi, jihadi, or Rohingya every single day is not a "benefit", nor is being lynched or having homes and religious sites bulldozed illegally. "Is it an 'honour' to be the target of hate speeches from no less than the Prime Minister of India?" he retorted that Indian Muslims don't migrate to other countries because of the benefits provided under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's welfare schemes. "How come minorities from our neighbouring countries prefer to come to India & our minorities don't migrate?" he responded sharply, saying, "According to Hon'ble Minister Against Minorities, if we don't migrate it means we are happy. Actually, we are not in the habit of fleeing: we did not run away from the British, we did not run away during partition, and we did not run away because of Jammu, Nellie, Gujarat, Moradabad, Delhi etc massacres."He added, "Our history is proof that we neither collaborate with our oppressors nor do we hide from them. We know how to fight for our democratic rights and we will inshallah."The Hyderabad MP also took aim at the government's changes to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which allows non-Muslims on Waqf boards."Can Muslims be members of Hindu Endowment Boards? No. But your Waqf Amendment Act forces non-Muslims onto Waqf Boards - and allows them to form a majority," he accused the Modi government of slashing scholarships for Muslim students, pointing out that the Maulana Azad National Fellowship was discontinued, and pre-matric, post-matric, and merit-cum-means scholarships were defunded or limited - all because they benefitted Muslim are now the only group whose numbers have fallen in higher education. Their presence in the informal economy has gone up. They have been among the worst-hit by your economic policies," he said, citing government further claimed that Indian Muslims are no longer treated even as second-class citizens but as hostages. "Indian Muslims are the only group whose children are now worse off than their parents or grandparents. Intergenerational mobility has reversed. Muslim-concentrated areas are the ones most starved of public infrastructure and basic services," he his rebuttal, Owaisi urged Rijiju to stop comparing Indian Muslims to minorities in "failed states" like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka."We are not asking to be compared with other minorities of other countries. We are not asking for more than what the majority community gets. We are demanding what the Constitution promises: social, economic, and political justice," he said.- EndsMust Watch

Leader of Opposition Ashok visits farm fields hit by rains in Hassan dist.
Shivamogga Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok visited the agricultural fields affected by recent heavy rains in Hassan district, and demanded the State government to provide compensation for the growers. Mr. Ashok visited maize farms at Kariganahalli in Alur taluk. He interacted with farmers, who told him that they suffered a huge loss due to downy mildew (bili-suli), a fungal infection that hit the maize crop. Later, he visited coffee estates at Kyanahalli and Chinnahalli in Sakleshpur taluk. Coffee, pepper, and areca plantations had been badly hit by the recent rains. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ashok said that the government was not responding to the woes of the farming community. The representatives had not taken time to visit the farms and speak to the farmers here. 'The government should come to their rescue. And if it does not have money, the government should borrow it to give compensation to the farmers,' he said. Regarding the sudden deaths due to heart attack in Hassan district, Mr. Ashok urged the State government to find out the reason. 'The Chief Minister became a laughing stock by commenting on the COVID-19 vaccine. The government should probe why there have been deaths in Hassan alone,' he said. Legislators H.K. Suresh, Cement Manju, BJP district unit president Siddesh Nagendra, former MLA H.M. Vishwanath, and others were present.

BBMP suspends 10 civic officials after QR-coded caste census stickers found on bikes, tea stalls
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Monday suspended 10 civic officials for purported negligence in conducting the caste census ordered by the state government. The exercise to collect information regarding members of 101 communities falling under the Scheduled Caste category has been mired in controversy since it was launched in Bengaluru on June 23. Several citizens have alleged that QR-coded stickers marking Scheduled Caste (SC) households have been pasted on buildings, vehicles, and even tea stalls in a random manner. In 2015, the Congress government spent ₹170 Cr on a caste census in Karnataka, then blamed dogs for its flaws. Now in Bengaluru, BBMP is pasting caste stickers without collecting any data. From dogs to data-less drama, Congress's idea of social justice is a comedy of errors. — P C Mohan (@PCMohanMP) July 3, 2025 Suralkar Vikas Kishore, Special Commissioner (Welfare), BBMP, admitted to gaps in carrying out the census. He, however, said, 'If the sticker is pasted on a non-SC house, they can just ignore it and if the house occupants belong to the SC community, then they can call the helpline number, and the field officers will visit them. Or they can participate in the survey online by using the QR-coded sticker.' 'We have suspended 10 officials for their shoddy work, and we will initiate action against them. But these stickers don't indicate that the survey is completed,' he added. Meanwhile, several Bengaluru residents flagged issues relating to the survey on social media. 'Please let me know the caste of HONDA ACTIVA!' one social media user sarcastically posted on X after he spotted the sticker on his two-wheeler. In another case, BBMP officials allegedly tried to paste the QR-coded sticker on a building in Chikkalasandra without speaking to the residents. Shashank, son of the house owner, said, 'We were inside the house when they (BBMP officials) arrived. They did not ask for any details and failed to show their ID cards. When we told them that they could not paste the sticker without collecting the details, the BBMP officials assaulted us. We went to the Subramanyapura police station to file a complaint. The civic officials, thereafter, apologised to us, so we returned without filing a complaint.' Medha S, a resident of Puttenahalli, said, 'These people are pasting the stickers like how product sales executives throw pamphlets inside houses. They are doing this despite knowing that there are occupants in the house.' Reacting to the controversy, Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra said on X, 'The so-called Caste Survey is nothing more than a hollow spectacle, orchestrated by CM Siddaramaiah with no real political will to implement it meaningfully. This exercise – born out of the Congress government's continued apathy towards internal reservation – has now become a subject of public mockery. Media reports and citizen accounts point to a farcical execution, where enumerators merely paste stickers and leave without any genuine engagement with residents.' 'Let's not forget: the Kantharaj Commission report was submitted in 2015. Yet, during his full five-year term as Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah chose not to act on it. CM Siddaramaiah must stop misleading marginalised communities with half-hearted theatrics. The people of Karnataka don't need empty promises – they deserve results,' he added. The BBMP has claimed that it has till now identified over 6.7 lakh SC individuals after covering more than 1.8 lakh SC households in the city.
