Tesla faces lawsuit over fatal autopilot crash involving 2024 Model S in New Jersey

USA Today24-06-2025
Tesla TSLA.O was sued on Monday by the estates of three people killed last September when their 2024 Model S equipped with Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features crashed on New Jersey's Garden State Parkway.
The wrongful death lawsuit filed in the federal court in Camden, New Jersey, attributed the deaths of David Dryerman, 54; his wife Michele, 54; and their daughter Brooke, 17, to the car's "defective and unreasonably dangerous design."
Brooke's older brother, Max Dryerman, was not in the car, and is also a plaintiff. The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

Tesla, led by billionaire Elon Musk, did not immediately respond to requests for comment after market hours. The plaintiffs' lawyers did not immediately respond to similar requests.
Musk's company, based in Austin, Texas, has long faced questions about the safety of its self-driving technology.
Tesla has said its features are meant for "fully attentive" drivers with their hands on the steering wheel, and that the features do not now make its vehicles autonomous.
Under pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla agreed in December 2023 to recall more than 2 million vehicles in the United States to add safeguards to its Autopilot advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
According to published reports, the Dryermans were returning from a music festival on September 14, 2024, when their Model S ran off the road in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, hitting a sign, guardrail and concrete bridge support.
The complaint said the car's defective design caused it to stray from its lane of travel and fail to apply emergency braking, resulting in the crash.
It also said Tesla failed to warn David Dryerman, who was driving, that his Model S was unsafe, citing Musk's statement in 2016 that Autopilot was "probably better" than human drivers.
The Dryermans were wearing seat belts, according to the complaint.
"Thousands of Tesla drivers have relied on Tesla's ADAS technology as though it were capable of safe, fully autonomous self-driving with minor software updates when in fact it is incapable of safely handling a variety of routine roadway scenarios without driver input," the complaint said.
The case is Dryerman et al v Tesla Inc, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, No. 25-11997.

Navitas' GaN Power ICs Gaining Traction: What's Fueling It?

Navitas Semiconductor NVTS is a key player in the next generation of power semiconductors, driving innovation in GaN (gallium nitride) technologies. Its GaN business — branded as GaNFast, GaNSafe and GaNSense — is now a major growth engine. Investors are increasingly eyeing the GaN semiconductor device market, which is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 6.1% from 2023 to 2028 (according to MarketsandMarkets). Leading tech firms like NVIDIA Corporation NVDA and Tesla TSLA are actively investing in GaN to power their fast chargers, servers and electric vehicle (EV) platforms. This validates GaN's potential and encourages adoption. With strong year-over-year growth, a widening footprint across mobile, EV, energy sectors and strategic global partnerships, Navitas is well-positioned to benefit from the accelerating demand for GaN semiconductor devices. The company's GaN business revenues grew over 50% year over year in 2024 amid broader semiconductor sector softness. The business is gaining strong momentum across multiple high-growth markets. In the Mobile & Consumer segment, it has achieved over 180 GaN charger design wins in 2024 and currently supplies all top 10 global smartphone manufacturers. Strategic partnerships with Transsion in Africa (potential) and Jio in India highlight Navitas' expansion into emerging markets. The company is ramping up new 80 - 120V GaN devices in 2025 to target the 48V DC-DC converter market. Within the Electric Vehicle sector, in 2024, Navitas secured its first design win with Changan Auto's onboard charger, boasting 6kW/L power density and 96% efficiency. In Solar & Energy Storage, it launched its bidirectional GaN ICs - GaN BDS, in early 2025, whose first use case will be in solar microinverters (expected to ramp up in late 2025). Power Integrations' POWI GaN business is gaining strong momentum, which contributed 15% year-over-year total revenue growth in first-quarter 2025. The company's GaN portfolio includes InnoSwitch3, InnoMux-2 ICs, HiperPFS and Scale-2 Gate Drivers. Power Integrations is the only GaN supplier offering devices rated at 900V, 1250V and 1700V, giving it an advantage in grid-tolerant and high-voltage applications. In the automotive sector, the company achieved a significant milestone with its first-ever 900V GaN design win for a drivetrain emergency power supply at a major United States EV OEM. Power Integrations already has more than two dozen automotive designs in production, primarily in China, with broader traction expected in Japan and Europe. STMicroelectronics STM is actively expanding its GaN technology as part of its broader power and discrete semiconductor portfolio. In first-quarter 2025, STMicroelectronics signed a development and manufacturing agreement with Innoscience to accelerate GaN development. This includes joint R&D and reciprocal use of front-end manufacturing capacity. The collaboration is designed to fast-track STMicroelectronics' GaN power roadmap. Its GaN product line is still in the early commercialization and co-development phase. Year to date, shares of Navitas have surged 79.3%, outperforming the industry's and S&P 500 composite's growth of 13.4% and 5.4%, respectively. GM Beats Tesla in EV Growth, Reports 7% Jump in Overall Q2 Deliveries

General Motors Company GM has witnessed a 7.3% hike in its year-on-year sales growth in the second quarter, totaling deliveries of 746,588 vehicles, following a 16.7% increase in the first quarter. Deliveries rose 12% year over year in the first half of 2025. It was GM's best first-half since 2019. In contrast to this, Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) has seen its deliveries shrink in Q2 as it struggles with a dated lineup, expensive pricing and the controversial politics. Tesla reported 384,122 vehicle deliveries, a 14% straight decline from the year-ago level of 443,956. This was the second consecutive quarter that witnessed double-digit declines. GM has been continually launching newer and redesigned models over the past two years. The company now has a lineup of 11 EV models, of which Chevrolet has displayed the highest growth 134% in the H1 sales, led by Equinox EV, which has secured its place among the top three best-selling EVs. Similarly, Cadillac emerged as the luxury EV market share leader in Q2. GM boasts of an EV market share of 16%, close to its total market share of 17% in the second quarter, following its 100% growth surge in EV sales. The boost in sales is a result of its investments in crossovers, SUVs and pickups, both gas and electric, paired with great execution. This enabled GM to beat the estimated 4% total auto industry growth. To keep up with the wave, GM is planning to further invest around $4 billion to strengthen its U.S. production and combat the impact of tariffs and other government policies. GM and TSLA currently carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), respectively. Some better-ranked stocks in the auto space are Ferrari N.V. RACE, Luminar Technologies LAZR and Westport Fuel Systems WPRT. While RACE sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) at present, LAZR and WPRT carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) each. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for RACE's current-year earnings is pegged at $9.89 per share, indicating a 7.97% year-over-year earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average surprise of 10.75%. RACE's shares have gained 16% in the past year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Luminar's 2025 loss is pegged at $4.29 per share, indicating an improvement of 53.57% from year-ago levels. The company's earnings beat the consensus estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average surprise of 11.79%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for WPRT's 2025 loss is pegged at $1.27 per share, indicating an improvement of 40.93% from year-ago levels. Tesla Drops Killer Model Y Lease Deal for July

Tesla Drops Killer Model Y Lease Deal for July originally appeared on Autoblog. Much like its Model 3 sibling, the Model Y also received a few updates for the 2025 model year and some rather attractive lease deals for July. The lease deals vary depending on which model you choose and how much money you put down, but they seem to be nationwide. Always check Tesla's website yourself for potential personalized offers. The Model Y Long Range RWD can be leased for $399 per month for 36 months with a $3,000 down payment and 10,000 miles per year. The Long Range AWD model gets higher monthly cost of $499 for 36 months, with a down payment of $3,000 and a 10,000-mile annual limit. The down payments can be adjusted for lower monthly payments, but there are limits depending on the model you choose. To sweeten the deal even more, you may also be eligible for the $7,500 Tesla incentive, along with a $1,000 off Military, First Responder, Teacher, and Student offer, or a $1,000 Tesla Credit and $1,000 cash from Lyft for verified Lyft drivers. Potential lessees who want to save money on the upfront costs can pay $0 at signing, with some adjustments to the monthly payment. We have estimated the monthly payments by spreading the amount at signing over the lease's term. Given the equal down payment, all models would carry an extra ~$83 per month. The Model Y Long Range RWD would get a total estimated monthly payment of $482, while the Long Range AWD would increase to $582. The 2025 refresh, dubbed "Juniper," received a full-width light bar in the form of daytime running lights and taillights, as well as a rear 8-inch passenger touchscreen. The front infotainment screen is the same 15.4-inch one and still lacks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Long Range models are now rated at 357 miles for the RWD poewrtrain and 327 miles for the AWD one. As for charging times, the Model Y Long Range AWD can add up to 169 miles in 15 minutes, whereas the RWD can add up to 182 miles in 15 minutes. Strangely, the top speed of the non-performance Model Y variants was reduced from 135 mph to 125 mph, but 0-60 mph times are still impressive, at 5.4 seconds for the RWD and 4.6 seconds for the AWD. Thankfully, due to customer complaints, Tesla kept the traditional turn signal stock. Given its size, the Model Y does a pretty good job at holding people and cargo, with seating for up to 5 adults and 76 cu. ft. of cargo space. The Model Y Long Range RWD starts at $44,990 while the Long Range AWD jumps to $48,990. Lease offers can vary based on location and specific vehicle configuration (trim level, options, etc.) and are subject to credit approval. Advertised payments typically exclude taxes, title, registration, and other potential fees.
