Who Is Greta Thunberg, Climate Activist On Gaza-Bound Ship Intercepted by Israel
The British-flagged yacht Madleen, operated by the Pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was sailing to the war-torn city to provide humanitarian aid - baby formula, rice and medical supplies.
On Monday, Ms Thunberg claimed the vessel was "kidnapped" in international waters on June 9, approximately 20 nautical miles off Egypt's coast. The Israeli forces disputed the claim, saying the interception was lawful. All passengers were unharmed, provided sandwiches and water and the vessel was redirected to the Israeli port.
Who Is Greta Thunberg?
Born on January 3, 2003, in Stockholm, Sweden, Greta Thunberg is known for starting the 'Fridays for Future' movement by skipping school every Friday to protest outside the parliament in 2018. She first learned about climate change when she was eight years old and became deeply concerned about the worsening climate conditions.
At the age of 11, she went into depression, stopped eating, and barely spoke for months. She was later diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome (a form of autism), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and selective mutism. In 2019, she spoke at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York and later became the youngest person to receive TIME Magazine's Person of the Year title.
In 2020, she spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos and later met Malala Yousafzai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize-winner for championing Pakistani women's education. Ms Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban when she was a schoolgirl.
She also released a documentary titled 'I Am Greta' which shows her journey from being a quiet teenager to a global climate activist.
In 2021, during a speech at the Youth4Climate Summit in Milan, Ms Thunberg criticised world leaders, including then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and then US President Joe Biden, for failing to fulfil their promises to address the climate crisis. In 2022, she released "The Climate Book," a compilation of essays from hundreds of experts focusing on changes to the Earth's climate. She was named on the Forbes 30 under 30 Europe list in 2023.
Several species have been named after Ms Thunberg to honour her efforts in raising global awareness about climate change. Some of these are Nelima Thunbergae (spider found in Germany), Nelloptodes gretae (beetle found in Kenya), Craspedotropis gretathunbergae (snail found in Borneo's rainforests), and Pristimantis gretathunbergae (frog found in Panama).

Malabar Devasom Board employees to stage token protest
The Kerala State Temple Employees Coordination Committee has threatened strong protest measures if the issues faced by the employees of the Malabar Devaswom Board (MDB) are not addressed soon. A token protest will be held at 11 a.m. on July 21, marking the 31st anniversary of the 1994 Kerala High Court order that led to the formation of the board. V.V. Sreenivasan, chairman of the Coordination Committee, pointed out that none of the directions in the High Court order—apart from the formation of the Board—had been implemented by the State government, despite the political changes over the years. The temples under the MDB still follow the Madras Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, instituted during the British era, while other Devaswom Boards in the State follow different legislation. Meanwhile, a comprehensive Devaswom law framed by the State government eight years ago is yet to be implemented. The coordination committee had staged a 64-day-long protest a few years ago, which failed to achieve the desired results.

Pope Leo XIV emphasised the importance of protecting places of worship in a call Friday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Israel's deadly strike on Gaza's only Catholic Church, the Vatican said. "During the conversation, the Holy Father renewed his appeal to revive negotiations and reach a ceasefire and the end of the war," the Vatican said in a statement, noting that Leo was at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome. "He once again expressed his concern for the dramatic humanitarian situation of the population in Gaza, whose heartbreaking toll is borne particularly by children, the elderly and the sick. "Finally, the Holy Father reiterated the urgency of protecting places of worship and especially the faithful and all people in Palestine and Israel." Netanyahu has said Israel "deeply regrets" the strike, and blamed a "stray round". He repeated this regret in the conversation with the pope, which was "friendly", a spokesman for Netanyahu told AFP, adding that the two men agreed to meet soon.

Why Netanyahu Government Is On The Verge Of Collapse And How He Can Save It
Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is on the brink of collapse. Israel's two ultra-Orthodox parties - United Torah Judaism (UTJ) and Shas - have announced plans to leave Netanyahu's coalition. They are demanding to pass a law that would continue exempting the ultra-Orthodox Israelis from military conscription-- a proposal that is fiercely opposed by Netanyahu's own Likud party, among other coalition members. The UTJ legislators have already submitted their resignations on Monday, while those of Shas are openly threatening to follow suit. With both ultra-Orthodox parties likely on the way out, Netanyahu's coalition faces an unstable parliamentary majority with just 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. But that does not mean elections are around the corner. Why The Two Parties Are Threatening To Quit For over a decade, the ultra-Orthodox have supported Netanyahu even as the Israeli public turned on him. In return, the Prime Minister would give generous government subsidies to ultra-Orthodox institutions. He also protected the community from Israel's military draft, which mandated Jewish Israelis to serve in the Israel Defence Forces. Young ultra-Orthodox men were exempted from the rule and instead paid to study religious texts. The arrangement has received backlash before, but the Hamas October 7 attack changed the scene, with the Supreme Court last year ordering an end to the exemption. Now, the ultra-Orthodox parties are trying to push for a new bill, but a consensus couldn't be reached for far. Why Netanyahu's Government Is Safe For Now For now, UTJ and Shas don't seem to be in a hurry to force Netanyahu out of government. They appear to be using the threat of exit as leverage to force Netanyahu's hand on the matter. Announcing their decision to quit, Shaa left the door for compromise open. They asked the lawmakers to enact a law in favour of ultra-Orthodox students "as soon as possible and no later than the opening of the Knesset winter session, so that it will be possible to maintain the existence of the government and the coalition partnership," according to a report by The Times of Israel. The Knesset is set to go for a three-month recess on July 27. This gives Netanyahu ample time to try to resolve the crisis behind closed doors, while the government continue to function in a reduced capacity until late October, without facing immediate legislative challenges or no-confidence votes. Netanyahu's Other Challenges Soon after Shas's decided to leave Netanyahu's coalition, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid said Israel's "illegitimate" government has no authority to make crucial decisions. "A minority government cannot send soldiers to battle. A minority government cannot decide who will live and who will die. A minority government cannot decide the fate of Gaza, reach arrangements with Syria or Saudi Arabia. It cannot continue to transfer billions to the corrupt and the military draft dodgers at the expense of taxpayers," Lapid said. He called for elections, which are currently due in late 2026. Now, whenever that contest takes place, Netanyahu is likely to face the steepest political challenge of his career. He managed to survive the last election on a technicality in Israel's electoral system after his coalition received just 48.4 per cent of the vote. But since April 2023, no amount of success against Hamas, Hezbollah or Tehran seems to be helping the coalition win polls and alienating his closest allies may not work in his favour.
