Malaysia and Singapore to enhance youth volunteerism and unity

The Sun4 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Singapore are set to deepen regional cooperation to strengthen youth volunteerism and unity, according to National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.
The minister shared details of the initiative following a courtesy visit to Singapore's Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, David Neo. In a Facebook post, Aaron stated, 'The discussion included a proposal to establish a volunteer exchange programme and develop a collaborative network between youth volunteer organisations from both countries.'
Aaron also emphasised ongoing efforts by Malaysia's Ministry of National Unity, particularly through Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS). The foundation has been actively involved in the Sukarelawan Siswa MADANI Berkhidmat missions, both domestically and internationally.
These initiatives, he noted, demonstrate Malaysia's dedication to nurturing resilient, united, and globally aware youth.
Aaron is currently in Singapore at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth to participate in the Third International Conference on Cohesive Societies (ICCS) 2025, which commenced on Tuesday.

Singapore Muslims to send 16 tonnes of Korban meat to Gaza

SINGAPORE, June 29 — A total of 16 tonnes of canned Korban meat donated by Muslims in Singapore will be sent to Palestinians in Gaza later this year as part of ongoing humanitarian efforts. According to The Straits Times, the update was shared by Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim yesterday, who said the donation highlights how the community is 'deeply mindful of our responsibility to support those facing humanitarian challenges abroad'. The Korban meat, slaughtered overseas, will be processed and canned before being delivered to Gaza in the second half of 2025. Faishal said distribution will be carried out by 'trusted partners on the ground', citing the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation as one example. 'This initiative represents not just our religious obligations, but also our commitment to supporting communities in crisis,' he reportedly said. 'It demonstrates how our acts of worship can be channelled to those in need and to provide practical assistance to those in dire circumstances.' Korban, the ritual slaughter of livestock during Hari Raya Aidiladha, is largely performed overseas for Singapore's Muslim community. The meat is then chilled and sent back for distribution locally. This year, six mosques in Singapore are approved to conduct Korban rites, with 39 tonnes of meat set aside for about 1,000 local beneficiaries. Faishal revealed that nearly 5,700 overseas Korban orders were made in 2025 — the highest since 2022 and a 20 per cent rise from last year. In response to feedback from the community, he said there are ongoing discussions with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) to potentially expand local Korban operations beyond the current six mosques. However, he stressed that 'the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance' will guide any decision. 'Please give us some time to look further into it and work closely with relevant agencies overseeing the regulatory requirements, to explore the possibilities,' he said. The aid shipment is part of broader efforts to support Gaza. Earlier in 2025, more than S$2.4 million (RM8 million) was raised under the Aid for Gaza campaign from February 24 to April 6. The funds will go towards essentials, healthcare and education for families affected by the conflict. The fundraising drive was spearheaded by the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund, the Egyptian Red Crescent, and Singapore-based humanitarian group Humanity Matters, under the SG60 community platform M³@Towns.

PAS warns of disciplinary action over insensitive remarks

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said lieutenant-general Johnny Lim's promotion is a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : PAS says it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any of its members who engage in insensitive behaviour that undermines national unity and fosters disharmony. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said a controversial Facebook post by a division chief regarding newly promoted lieutenant-general Johnny Lim was completely against the party's stance. Lim's promotion made him the first senior Malaysian Chinese officer to attain the three-star rank, and Takiyuddin stressed that the appointment was a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians. 'Diversity and differences in background should never be used as a reason or justification to treat any member of society unfairly,' he said in a statement tonight. 'Nor should they be used as grounds to deny progress, opportunities, achievements, abilities, or the legitimate aspirations of any individual or group. 'Racism or racial attitudes in any form or colour have no place in PAS and are incompatible with the nation's broader cultural values and national aspirations.' Yesterday, Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad speculated in a Facebook post about Malaysia having its first Chinese prime minister in the next 30 to 40 years. The post included a screenshot of a news report on Lim's promotion to lieutenant-general, with a caption stating that the image was merely for decorative purposes. Zaharudin has since said the image of Lim had no connection to the 'satirical message' in his posting, which drew a public backlash. The post has since been deleted. Takiyuddin said the post was in complete contradiction to official policies, resolutions and vision of PAS, as outlined in its constitution, resolutions of its annual general meetings, party meetings or official statements. He said PAS remains committed to upholding the principles and realities of Malaysia's ethnic and religious diversity, which is a 'unique and valuable' feature of Malaysian society that must be 'nurtured carefully'. Takiyuddin said PAS clearly demonstrated this when it agreed to amend the party's constitution to allow non-Muslims to become members of the Islamic party. 'The talent, achievements, progress and success of any Malaysian in any field should be a cause for collective celebration, not the opposite. 'PAS extends its congratulations to lieutenant-general Lim,' he said.
