PAS warns of disciplinary action over insensitive remarks

PETALING JAYA : PAS says it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any of its members who engage in insensitive behaviour that undermines national unity and fosters disharmony.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said a controversial Facebook post by a division chief regarding newly promoted lieutenant-general Johnny Lim was completely against the party's stance.
Lim's promotion made him the first senior Malaysian Chinese officer to attain the three-star rank, and Takiyuddin stressed that the appointment was a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians.
'Diversity and differences in background should never be used as a reason or justification to treat any member of society unfairly,' he said in a statement tonight.
'Nor should they be used as grounds to deny progress, opportunities, achievements, abilities, or the legitimate aspirations of any individual or group.
'Racism or racial attitudes in any form or colour have no place in PAS and are incompatible with the nation's broader cultural values and national aspirations.'
Yesterday, Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad speculated in a Facebook post about Malaysia having its first Chinese prime minister in the next 30 to 40 years.
The post included a screenshot of a news report on Lim's promotion to lieutenant-general, with a caption stating that the image was merely for decorative purposes.
Zaharudin has since said the image of Lim had no connection to the 'satirical message' in his posting, which drew a public backlash. The post has since been deleted.
Takiyuddin said the post was in complete contradiction to official policies, resolutions and vision of PAS, as outlined in its constitution, resolutions of its annual general meetings, party meetings or official statements.
He said PAS remains committed to upholding the principles and realities of Malaysia's ethnic and religious diversity, which is a 'unique and valuable' feature of Malaysian society that must be 'nurtured carefully'.
Takiyuddin said PAS clearly demonstrated this when it agreed to amend the party's constitution to allow non-Muslims to become members of the Islamic party.
'The talent, achievements, progress and success of any Malaysian in any field should be a cause for collective celebration, not the opposite.
'PAS extends its congratulations to lieutenant-general Lim,' he said.

Police to probe scuffle between cop, protester at anti-graft rally

A scuffle between a policeman and a protester, at an anti-corruption rally in central Kuala Lumpur today, shown in a video posted by X user @lancelot_se. PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a scuffle which broke out between a cop on duty and a protester at an anti-corruption rally attended by about 100 people in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said one of the rally-goers had lit a flare at about 4.30pm, producing thick smoke which could have endangered participants, security personnel on duty and members of the public nearby. Because of this, policemen on duty took preventive action, he said. 'As this preventive action was being taken, a scuffle broke out between the rally-goer and a policeman, leaving the latter with minor injuries. The scuffle was broken up by other policemen. Three reports were later lodged over the incident,' he said in a statement. Sulizmie said the investigation was into the use of criminal force against a public servant, the letting off of fireworks, and insulting behaviour. Around 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm today before moving to Dataran Merdeka through Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They urged Putrajaya to strengthen the legal system and reinforce the independence of anti-corruption institutions.

Saifuddin: Appointments in national security institutions should not be politicised

BALING: Appointments to positions within national security institutions should not be turned into political or racial polemics, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said all appointments, including within the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), are made based on strict screening processes that prioritise merit and service discipline, regardless of race or religion. He said that such issues were non-existent during the 1990s, when officers worked in harmony without regard to ethnicity or background. "Recently, when someone was promoted and received two stars, from one to two, it suddenly became an issue. "Speculative comments then followed, suggesting that if this continues, one day Malaysia could even have a Chinese Prime Minister, and so on. "This is the kind of situation we want to avoid in a multiracial country like Malaysia. Not everything should be viewed through a racial lens. "This is especially true for military institutions. They understand the promotion process well, there's the Armed Forces Council, screening, and various procedures involved," he told reporters after visiting the Sabo Dam construction site along the Kupang River basin here today. Previously, the appointment of Datuk Johny Lim Kean Seng as a Lieutenant General in the ATM drew attention after criticism from Sungai Buloh Pas chief Zaharuddin Muhammad in a social media post. DAP deputy secretary-general Steven Sim had reportedly slammed Zaharuddin's statement, describing it as an insult to the wisdom of the ATM and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Following this, Pas also expressed concern over the remarks and said it was reviewing further action in response to the allegations, which were deemed to undermine racial harmony in the country. Commenting further, Saifuddin said racially charged remarks such as those are dangerous and do not reflect the spirit of unity in a multiracial nation like Malaysia. He also upheld the recent decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, who warned against the use of religion as a political tool to divide the nation. He said the royal reminder clearly reflected His Majesty's concern for national harmony and should serve as guidance to all, regardless of political affiliation. "National unity must always be prioritised, and all parties should stop magnifying racial issues that could jeopardise the country's stability," he said.

As CJ retirement looms, Fadhli contrasts Tengku Maimun and Azam

As Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat is set for retirement on July 1, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari pointed out the contrasting treatment received by the top judge as opposed to MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki. He said that despite receiving massive support from the legal fraternity, academics, NGOs, and the public, the government does not seem keen to extend Tengku Maimun's tenure despite the Federal Constitution allowing it. 'Ironically, Azam, who is...
