The BS stage VI buses will replace ageing fleets connecting Central and Chathiram bus terminuses.
Initially, the buses were planned to be operated once the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur becomes operational. However, as the opening of the terminus has been postponed to June-end, the buses were launched from the Central bus stand. Talking to reporters after the event, the minister said vacant shops at the Chathiram bus terminus will be allocated to traders soon.
On desilting waterbodies, the minister said, "Ahead of opening of the Mettur dam, the desilting work in canals and channels has been expedited as per the instructions of the chief minister. Other waterbodies are also being desilted as a part of preparatory measures before the monsoon to prevent inundations. Around 80 crore have been sanctioned for the work."
TNSTC sources said the Kumbakonam division was allocated 173 new buses, of which 110 buses including 50 city buses and 60 mofussil buses, were commissioned. The remaining buses — 26 city buses and 37 mofussil buses — will be launched in a phased manner. About 30 low-floor buses are likely to be allocated for operations in Trichy and Thanjavur, sources added.

Reaching Maramalai hills a huge ordeal for estate workers
KANNIYAKUMARI: The heavily damaged seven-kilometre stretch of a state highway from Keeriparai to Maramalai hills, which has not even been re-laid once in the last two decades, has turned out to be an immense hassle for nearly 200 estate workers and a few government staff working at a panchayat office and a post office in Maramalai hills. As government bus service to the area has not been operational for nearly 20 years, the people travelling to Maramalai hills solely rely on private transport, which sets them back by Rs 1,500 per trip. A major portion of the four-kilometre stretch, which connects the state highway with the panchayat office, is a panchayat union road, and has been re-laid, said R Lilly Bai Santhappan, former panchayat president of Balamore. However, no road resurfacing work was carried out on the state highway over the last two decades, she said. The government staff has no other choice besides opting for private transport to reach the panchayat office and the post office, she said, accusing authorities concerned of not taking action on their repeated, long-pending demand. A vehicle driver said it takes nearly an hour to travel through the damaged stretch, causing serious troubles while transporting patients to hospitals in case of emergencies. 'We need to travel 20 kilometres to reach the nearby hospital in Thadikarankonam; for specialty treatment, we need to go to the hospitals in Nagercoil, located 40 kilometres from Maramalai hills,' he said, adding that they charge between Rs 800 and Rs 2,000 per trip, based on the distance, from Keeriparai to the hills. Urging the authorities to re-lay the road and operate mini bus services, CITU district estate worker union general secretary M Valsakumar said the estate workers depend on private vehicles to travel to Keeriparai, Thadikarankonam and Nagercoil to even purchase commodities. He also suggested that the state government could promote tourism, likening the Maramalai hills to Kodaikanal. T Ayyappan, a retired BSNL staff, said the road was completely not navigable on a two-wheeler, and rains worsen the travel, recollecting his latest journey to the hills a few months ago. Officials from the state highways department officials said the cost to re-lay the road would be very high, as it has not been repaired for the last two decades. Thus, we have been considering pothole repair and patching the road, they added. A senior TNSTC official said an inspection on the condition of the road would be conducted soon.

Valarakurichi Adi Dravidar streets get direct bus link to Ariyalur
Trichy: Residents of Adi Dravidar streets in Valarakurichi village, Ariyalur district, celebrated the launch of their first-ever direct bus service to the district headquarters on Wednesday. Marking the occasion with reverence, villagers offered prayers and removed their slippers as a symbolic gesture while welcoming the private minibus into their locality. Until now, residents had to walk or use two-wheelers to reach bus stops located 1–2 km away. The new service is part of the Regional Transport Office's New Comprehensive Plan for Mini Bus Scheme 2024, which introduced 31 new and extended routes across Ariyalur district. Although Valarakurichi recently got limited TNSTC connectivity, the Adi Dravidar streets—home to about 100 families—remained cut off due to narrow roads that couldn't accommodate standard buses. The minibus, operated by Sri Srinivasa Bus Services, now links the locality with the Ariyalur Government Medical College Hospital via the district bus stand. "The minibus is the right fit for these narrow roads and will benefit the entire village," said K Arjunan, Sendurai taluk secretary of the CPM. The bus's inaugural trip saw women commuters prostrating on the road in gratitude. The crew handed out sweets and chocolates, most of the passengers being women heading to work. "Since the village is remote, we've extended our service here. Women and elderly passengers commuting to the government medical college can travel for free," said Suresh Babu, the bus operator. Under the new scheme, each mini-bus route can cover up to 25 km, with at least 65% of the stretch serving areas not covered by TNSTC or private buses.

Six new TNSTC buses flagged off in Trichy
1 2 Trichy: School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi flagged off a total of six new buses from the Chathiram bus stand and Ponmalaipatti in Trichy on Saturday. The minister dedicated five buses from the Chathiram bus stand including a town bus under 'Magalir Vidiyal Payanam Thittam' for Thuvakudi via Thiruverumbur and NIT Trichy. Among the four new mofussil buses, two buses will ply between Trichy and Madurai via Viralimalai and Thuvarankurichi, one between Trichy and Cumbum via Dindigul and Theni and one between Manapparai and Tirupur via Trichy and Karur. At Ponmalaipatti, the minister flagged off a town bus under Magalir Vidiyal Payanam Thittam between Ponmalaipatti and the Chathiram bus stand via the Central bus stand. The new buses were launched on behalf of the Trichy Zone of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam division.
