Geopolitical conflict, early monsoon impact Coca-Cola's India Q2 play

Global beverage major Coca-Cola flagged the impact of early monsoons coupled with geopolitical disturbances in the June quarter, leading to a decline in volumes in India.
'In India, after a strong start to the year, volumes declined as our business was impacted by the early monsoon and geopolitical conflict early in the important summer season. In response, we are engaging consumers with integrated marketing campaigns and tailoring these activations to local and regional needs,' said James Quincey, Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola Company, during the quarterly earnings call with investors.
On a consolidated basis, the company's unit case volume declined by 1 per cent, as growth in Central Asia, Argentina, and China was more than offset by declines in Mexico, India, and Thailand.
Meanwhile, in the Asia Pacific region, the company's unit case volume declined by 5 per cent, largely due to a decline in India and the impact of refranchising bottling operations.
Last week, rival PepsiCo also reported a decline in its beverage business in India for the 12-week period ending June 14, citing early rains.
Speaking about recovery, Quincey underlined that the Indian market will never be a straight line.
'We're very bullish on India overall. While Q2 did decline, we have a lot of marketing campaigns focused on India. We have also just set up the first refranchised piece with the Jubilant Group for the company-owned bottler that we have, which is up and running with a new CEO, and we think this will bring new energy, dynamism, and focus to the execution,' he said.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta-based fizzy drinks major also announced the launch of its cane sugar products in the United States after former US President Donald Trump posted on social media last week claiming that he had persuaded the company to replace high-fructose corn syrup.
'As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with US cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range. This addition is designed to complement the company's strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences,' the company stated in its earnings release.

He said UAE is India's third-largest trading partner globally, and UAE companies are increasingly looking to invest in India not just in sectors such as food processing, infrastructure, and retail, but also in areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, waste management and circularity, data centres, defence and space, fintech, and tourism, among others. Bengaluru: The simmering controversy over the tendering process of smart meters in Karnataka took an interesting turn with the special court for elected representatives on Wednesday directing enforcement agencies to register a private complaint report (PCR) against energy minister KJ George and others. Based on a complaint filed by BJP functionaries CN Ashwath Narayan, SR Vishwanath, and Dheeraj Muniraj, special court judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat directed officials to submit a status report on the complaint filed with the Lokayukta in April 2025 pertaining to the same issue, besides registering a PCR. The complaint also named additional chief secretary (energy) Gaurav Gupta, previous Bescom MD Mahantesh Bilagi, and Bescom technical director SG Ramesh as accused in the case. The complainants alleged that all the accused did not comply with the tender rules while rolling out the smart meter tender. "A tender was floated in Sept 2024 to provide smart meter services, and it was allotted to one of the bidders, a Davanagere-based shell company. Rather than floating separate tenders for each of the Escoms (electricity supply companies), tenders were floated only for Bescom. The entire process not only violated provisions under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act, but also went against the guidelines laid down by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission," the complaint read. Teams of both India and the U.S. are presently engaged in "active negotiations" on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), the government informed Parliament on Thursday (July 24, 2025). In a written response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also said, "Discussions are aimed at adopting an integrated approach to further strengthen and deepen bilateral trade relations, including through enhanced mutual market access, reduction of tariff and non-tariff barriers, and closer integration of supply chains." The Ministry of External Affairs was asked by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi whether the government has taken note of the recent announcement by the U.S. administration regarding the reimposition of tariffs on Indian exports. "On the sidelines of the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Washington, DC on 1 July 2025, the External Affairs Minister referred to the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations that are going on between India and the U.S.," Mr. Singh said. Both sides acknowledged the importance of "maintaining positive momentum" in these negotiations and expressed their commitment to an early conclusion of the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector BTA, the MoS said. "The trade teams of both countries are presently engaged in active negotiations on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA)," he added. Mr. Singh said that on April 2, 2025, the U.S. announced the imposition of additional ad valorem reciprocal duties on 185 countries (including the European Union). As per the order, a 10% tariff was imposed on all countries effective April 5 this year. From April 9, this was to be revised to "country-specific tariffs". "The reciprocal tariff applicable to India was fixed at 26%. Subsequently, a 90-day pause, till 9 July 2025, was authorised with substantially lower reciprocal tariff of 10 per cent. On 7 July 2025, the implementation date for the reciprocal tariffs was further extended from 9 July 2025 to 1 August 2025," he added.
