TCS shares slip nearly 2% after company announces over 12,000 job cuts

As of the end of June 2025, TCS employed 613,069 people globally. In a statement, the company said the layoffs would primarily impact middle and senior grades and are part of TCS's larger journey to become a 'future-ready organisation.'
The company added that the deployment of some associates may no longer be feasible under current market conditions.The company emphasized that the transition is being managed carefully to ensure continuity in client service. Affected employees will receive their full notice period compensation along with additional severance benefits. TCS also plans to provide insurance extensions, outplacement support, counseling, and transition assistance.The decision follows closely on the heels of legal complaints filed by several employees against TCS's recently modified 'bench policy.' The updated policy reportedly allows just 35 annual days for employees to remain unassigned before being subject to performance-related action, and it requires a minimum of 225 billable days annually.

According to a previous report by ET, job additions across the top six Indian IT majors fell sharply by over 72% in the April–June quarter, with only 3,847 new hires compared to 13,935 in the preceding quarter.Despite the layoffs, TCS reaffirmed its commitment to long-term strategic initiatives, including investments in new-age technologies, entry into new markets, deployment of AI at scale, deeper partnerships, and the development of next-generation infrastructure.

On Friday, TCS shares closed flat at Rs 3,134.35 on the BSE.

Kerala to launch bottle return scheme through Bevco to curb plastic menace
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an effort to curb plastic menace, the state government is all set to introduce a deposit -return scheme through the Beverages Corporation (Bevco). The initiative will be rolled out on a pilot basis in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur this September. An amount of Rs 20 will be collected as deposit and QR code-enabled bottles can be returned in the respective outlets from where it is purchased. Annually 70 crore bottles are sold via Bevco annually, of which 56 crore are plastic bottles. Excise Minister M B Rajesh on Thursday, said the Tamil Nadu government has successfully implemented this scheme. He said the consumer will have to pay Rs 20 as deposit at the outlet while purchasing liquor bottles and the scheme aims to reduce littering of non-biodegradable bottles by incentivising consumers to return them. He said that the initiative is expected to reduce the volume of discarded bottles. The scheme is implemented jointly by Bevco and Clean Kerala Company Ltd (CKCL). CKCL will handle the logistics and ensure processing or recycling of the returned bottles. The minister said that the first-ever super premium outlet of Bevco will become operational in Thrissur with 4000 sq ft built-up space from August 5. Four more super premium outlets will be opened soon, he added. The super premium outlet will sell liquor brands that cost above Rs 900.

NEW DELHI: Besides inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of 53 development projects worth Rs 2,248 crore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also release the 20th instalment of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KSN) during his visit to his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on August 2. Moreover, the four-lane Varanasi-Bhadohi road adorned with beautiful streetlights featuring 'Tridents and Damrus' as well as idols of deities erected at road dividers and footpaths would also be inaugurated by the PM. Notably, UP accounts for a 25% (one-fourth) of the total small and marginal farmers, nationally, to receive the instalment. The ambitious scheme envisages distribution of Rs 6,000 to identified farmers in three instalments. In all, the Centre is scheduled to release a sum of Rs 20,500 crore to be distributed to around 9.7 crore farmers nationally. Under the 20th tranche, Rs 2,000 each will be debited into the bank accounts of more than 9.7 crore farmers across India through the Direct Benefit Transfer system.
