F1 to hold two Saturday races in 2025 as Baku date shifts, Las Vegas remains night event

Malay Mail15 hours ago

LONDON, June 30 — Formula One will race on a Saturday in Azerbaijan next year to avoid a clash with a national day and pre-season testing will start behind closed doors at Spain's Barcelona circuit in January.
Formula One and the governing FIA said the change of date for the race in Baku had been made at the request of the promoter and government stakeholders.
Originally scheduled for September 27 next year, it will now be held on the 26th with each day of the event also moving forward.
That will mean Formula One having two Saturday races on next year's 24-round calendar, with the Las Vegas night grand prix scheduled for November 21.
Formula One is entering a new engine era next season with major technical changes and the new cars will hit the track earlier than usual, with teams having three pre-season tests to shake out any gremlins.
The first on January 26-30 will be a private one at the Circuit de Catalunya.
The second and third, with the usual access for media, will be in Bahrain between February 11-13 and 18-20. The season starts in Australia on March 8. — Reuters

Osaka overcomes spirited Gibson to reach Wimbledon second round

Naomi Osaka reacts after beating Talia Gibson of Australia in their first-round Wimbledon match. (AP pic) LONDON : Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka overcame some first-round jitters to survive a scrap with Australian qualifier Talia Gibson and advance at Wimbledon with a battling 6-4, 7-6(4) first-round win on Monday. Osaka may have no great love for Wimbledon's lawns, having never got past the third round at the grasscourt major, but she had enough quality and fight to subdue a spirited Gibson. With the evening shadow spilling across Court 18 to take the sting out of what had been a ferociously hot day, former world number one Osaka had to fight back in both sets against the Aussie. Yet after a second-round loss last year, the threat of another early exit was seemingly enough for the Japanese player to find extra gears when it mattered most. 'I think just making my match today, playing someone that I've never played before, and also getting over the first-round nerves was a little tricky,' she told reporters. 'I'm glad that I did it, and I hope that I have many more matches to come.' Gibson was spraying winners around the court when she broke to go 3-1 up, but Osaka took stock and upped the pressure, breaking back to level at 3-3 and then again to take the first set as the Australian's error count soared. Gibson, the world number 126, could have crumbled at that point, but instead she dug in, breaking for a 4-3 lead before a rollercoaster finale. The Australian, who was making her main draw debut, twice served for the set but was denied both times as Osaka conjured crucial breaks to force a tiebreak, where her extra class told. Osaka's form has been erratic since she returned after her maternity break at the start of last year, but there had been glimmers of hope for the current world number 53. She reached the Australian Open third round in January before retiring injured and made the fourth round at the 1,000-level events in Miami and Rome this year. Yet Osaka suffered a first-round loss at the French Open and has not had back-to-back wins on any surface since the Italian Open in May. If she is to end that run at Wimbledon, the Japanese player will need to overcome either Katerina Siniakova or fifth-seeded Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the second round. Osaka will need to show more of that battling spirit if she is to find some form on a surface she admits does not bring out the best in her game. 'I know the grass season hasn't been particularly amazing for me this year, but I'm really happy with how much I fight every match. No matter what or no matter how I think I play, I feel like the mentality is pretty solid.'

Monterrey coach warns only Messi can skip defending before Dortmund clash

MONTERREY coach Domenec Torrent warned his team every player must defend diligently if the Mexican club are to stand any chance of beating Borussia Dortmund in the Club World Cup last 16 on Tuesday. The Spanish coach said former Barcelona great Lionel Messi, whose Inter Miami side were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, is the only player in the world who can get away without tracking back. Monterrey secured an impressive 1-1 draw against Champions League runners-up Inter Milan in the group phase, but, to reach the quarter-finals, must secure a first ever win for a Mexican side against European opposition in the competition. 'We need to compete as a team, and what I mean is it's about defending -- we must all defend, if you do not defend, you're getting benched, if you don't abide by the rules, you're harming the team,' Torrent told a news conference Monday ahead of the match in Atlanta. 'We played very well against Inter Milan, we went in for every ball, we suffered and we endured, even our most talented players that tend to defend less, they defended very well. 'There are only one or two players who may make a difference -- one is Lionel Messi, the best player in history. He was the only one who could tip the balance, turn the game on its head, without team-mates, without defending. 'He was so good he could tip the balance but all the other players in the world they need to track back and to defend, otherwise you can't compete head-to-head with these teams.' Torrent said the margin of quality between European sides and the rest of the world was smaller, but still evident, although it did not preclude an upset. 'Against the top European teams there is a significant gap, this is the truth of the matter,' he explained. 'We have a plan A, plan B and plan C, that's what you need as a coach, many things happen over the course of a football match.' The Mexican side boast a serial winner in former Real Madrid veteran centre-back Sergio Ramos, with the 39-year-old wearing the captain's armband and marshalling the defence. In attack they have former Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos and striker German Berterame, who netted a brace against Urawa Red Diamonds in the final group game to help them progress second, eliminating Argentine powerhouses River Plate. - Del Piero's pick - Former Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero even picked Monterrey to go through ahead of Dortmund when making some last 16 predictions. 'He's a football world legend, a reference. We thank him, but we don't take it seriously. We know who we are and, on paper, who the favorites are,' said Torrent. 'I hope our players haven't heard (that), because what I want to make clear to my players is that we have to fight for every ball, every second -- only in this way can we compete.' Berterame said the team have grown a lot psychologically under Torrent, who was Pep Guardiola's assistant at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City before starting on his own path as a head coach. 'Our mentality and what we've accomplished have made our mindset higher now,' explained the forward. 'We have to try to play like we've been playing against Inter or River, maintaining that intensity and that order.'
