Luton 1-0 Wimbledon: Ryan Johnson own-goal condemns Dons to defeat on League One return
The Hatters were not at their best, but were gifted three points by Johnson's 85th-minute gaffe.
Nahki Wells lofted a ball into the box from range, aiming for the run of Cauley Woodrow, but the backpedalling Johnson badly misjudged his clearance, glancing a looping header into his own net.
With just five minutes left to play, there was not enough time for the Wombles to respond. There are positives to take back to Plough Lane, though. They limited the hosts to just six shots on the night, but managed just two themselves, neither of which were on target.
It is not an unfamiliar problem for Johnnie Jackson's side, who scored the second-fewest goals of any top-ten finisher in League Two last season.
'I'm gutted for the players and the supporters, said Jackson, cutting a downcast figure at the final whistle. 'To lose the game in that manner is cruel.'
He was quick to absolve Johnson of any blame, though: '[Johnson] has to go and put his head on it. It can land on top of the bar, go over, but it is just one of those things. It goes in, and it is a horrible way to lose.'
Luton have plenty riding on this campaign after suffering back-to-back relegations, tumbling from the Premier League to the third tier, and will be grateful for a slice of luck in their season opener.
But Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield acknowledged at full-time that there was plenty of room for improvement.
'We are an evolving group, adding lots of bodies,' he said. 'We are on the journey to the final product but we are not there yet, I think that's obvious.
'There's lots in my mind right now, but I am pleased to get off to a winning start.'
Luton have brought in no less than 10 new faces this summer, and announced an eleventh ahead of kick-off with the surprise unveiling of Swansea's Jerry Yates, who hit ten Championship goals last season while on loan at Derby County.
'It has been a tough one to get over the line, let me assure you,' Bloomfield laughed. 'We had to work really hard on it.
'I am complimentary of the boys we already have, but if we can add that pace and power, grit and determination which I think he brings, the way he presses, we are really pleased to get him through the door.'
Luton face Peterborough next time out as they look to extend their winning form, while Wimbledon will hope to get their first points on the board as they host Lincoln City.

Ex-pros back Swindon to be 'knocking on the door' for promotion
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has tipped Swindon Town to be competing for automatic promotion to League One this season. League Two is just one game old, and Swindon got off to a frustrating start with a 2-1 defeat against ten-man Walsall, who were the beaten playoff finalists from last season. But, Swindon enter the season with a slightly unfamiliar level of expectation after three seasons of languishing in the lower reaches of the fourth tier, with the bookmakers having them as the fifth-most likely team to win the division. After Ian Holloway turned Town into the sixth-best side in the division during 2025, they are seen as one of the teams that can compete. Speaking about what he expected from League Two to Goodman said: 'You have to start with MK Dons and Paul Warne. They look to have recruited well, sold the project to a manager who knows how to get promoted, so I'd be shocked if they didn't seriously challenge. 'I can't see anything other than them being in the top three and getting automatically promoted. 'Chesterfield, my old mate Paul Cook is there, and they will hope to do one better than last season. I thought that was a great effort, considering it was their first season back in the EFL. 'Notts County and Salford were in and around it last season and again you'd expect the same of those two, with them both being ambitious clubs. 'Ian Holloway at Swindon, I've got to mention, too. What he did from the moment he joined, I think the points tally would have been knocking on the door for automatic promotion, and they were relegation candidates when he joined. I definitely think Swindon will be up there.' Read more: Town set to miss out on striker target to Scottish Premiership club 'Hopefully they will realise' - Swindon still looking to move players out Breaking down how Swindon conceded 'world's worst goal' against Walsall He's not the only one who has been impressed by what Holloway has done and sees them being competitive this year. Speaking to BoyleSports, about the latest football betting, former Southampton man Iain Dowie said: "I think Ian Holloway has done an outstanding job there. Harry Smith caught fire at the end of the season, and they bought players like Billy Bodin, Tom Nichols and James Ball. "He doesn't need to do much. He's lost three games since the 18th of January, and he's got a personality that gets you smiling and lifts the mood, and it's great to see him doing what he's doing. "My view is I think they've got to be challenging given the way they've hit form, and I don't see that form going away. "He's going to be unbelievably competitive, and he drives them on from the sideline. I think they'll be in and around the shake-up."

Colts coaching staff impressed with Anthony Gould's quiet improvement
Colts coaching staff impressed with Anthony Gould's quiet improvement originally appeared on The Sporting News Second-year wide receiver Anthony Gould may not be the biggest name on the Colts offense, but he hasn't been deterred. The Oregon State product had an uneventful rookie year. He made just one 23-yard catch on offense and had a role as a special teams return man, returning a total of 17 kicks and punts over eight appearances. This offseason, Gould has taken a step up. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter sees his hard work paying off. 'He put in a really good offseason of work, and it's showing here at camp,' Cooter said after Sunday's practice. 'He's playing really good ball right now…he's absolutely gotten better.' Gould has been a frequent target for both Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones as a quick-hitting, over the middle connection for easy yards. That role is typically occupied by Josh Downs, but Gould has a similar skillset. Gould is listed a place behind Downs on the Colts first unofficial depth chart, the same position he was slotted into on last season's first depth chart. He's also listed as the primary kick and punt returner, a decision backed up by multiple reports of him fielding kicks at Grand Park. There's no telling how much of an impact Gould can have offensively in a crowded passing game, but the skillset and versatility is there to become a valuable asset in Indianapolis.
