Carnival and Royal Caribbean are making major cruise ship upgrades
Sometimes, cruise ship features miss the mark, or designers fail to recognize something that was important to passengers. Occasionally, they even overlook something that passengers say has a negative impact on the cruise experience.

Passenger preferences and needs change over time, too, so certain features eventually become outdated as new innovations are developed that enhance the cruise experience.
Luckily, the fact that there's limited space on a cruise ship doesn't mean onboard areas like the pool deck, restaurants, bars, and casinos, can't be redesigned at some point. Even spaces that can't be fully reworked, like staterooms, can be refreshed to add some enhancements.
When cruise ships go to dry dock for routine maintenance every few years, they often receive significant refurbishment throughout to overhaul existing venues and make improvements that will elevate passengers' future sailings on the ship.
Sometimes when a need arises, cruise lines will even make upgrades to a ship without taking it out of service for dry dock. That's something Royal Caribbean is currently doing to fix a big casino problem on some of its newer and most-popular ships.
Doug Parker shared more on the upgrades rolling out on board certain Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise ships, plus details on the largest ultra-luxury cruise ship suite yet, on the June 12th edition of Cruise News Today.

Good morning. Here's your cruise news for Thursday, June 12th.
Carnival Valor is back in service after completing a month-long dry dock over in Spain.
The 21-year-old ship received major upgrades including the addition of the Heroes Tribute Bar and WaterWorks Aqua Park. Public spaces were also refreshed, staterooms upgraded with USB outlets, and the casino and spa were also expanded.
Valor resumed service yesterday in Barcelona and is now sailing a 15-night repositioning cruise to New Orleans.

And a $25,000-per-night cruise.
Yeah, Regent Seven Seas has unveiled its most extravagant suite yet, the Skyview Regent Suite aboard the upcoming Seven Seas Prestige.
Spanning nearly 9,000 square feet over two levels, the suite will set you back $25,000 per night and includes a private gym, sauna, bar, elevator, and a car and driver in every port.

And Royal Caribbean is expanding the casino aboard Wonder of the Seas, converting the Crown Lounge on Deck 4 into a larger, non-smoking gaming area.
The Crown Lounge will be relocated to Deck 16 and reopen later this month. The expanded, redesigned casino will reopen in mid-July.
Wonder of the Seas is currently sailing Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral and will reposition to Miami in August.

And cruise stocks were down on Wednesday. Carnival Corporation: down 2.6 percent, 23.87. Royal Caribbean: down 1 percent, 267.96. Norwegian: down 3.3 percent, 19.08. And Viking: down 3 percent, 47.36.

Celebrity Cruises ship drifts off coast of Italy during power outage
Passengers aboard the Celebrity Cruises' Constellation experienced a few hours of neither air conditioning nor electricity during a brief power outage. A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Group, the line's parent company, confirmed the 2,170-passenger ship lost power for under three hours on Saturday, Aug. 2, as the team "addressed a technical issue" in an email to USA TODAY. The cruise line did not provide details on what sort of issue or repair was required. It's not uncommon for cruise ships to lose power, with most having emergency generators independent of the ship's main source of power as a backup plan. Situated on the upper decks, they can provide power for emergency lighting, elevators, radios and fire detection systems, and even re-start engines if necessary, according to Royal Caribbean's website. The ship was sailing to Messina, Sicily from Kotor, Montenegro and was right off the coast of Italy when the incident occurred, leaving it to drift for a short period of time, according to CruiseMapper. Satellite tracking data at the time showed the ship's speed briefly dropped down to as low as 1.1 mph, as reported by Cruise Hive. The cruise line said the ship was close enough to the coast to still be within range of cell phone service. "We've been communicating with our guests directly," the spokesperson added. Part of Celebrity's more upscale Millennium class, the Constellation is currently sailing an 11-day, one-way cruise departing from Ravenna, Italy on July 28. It is scheduled to visit Naples and Livorno before ending in Civitavecchia-Rome on Aug. 8. During a Q&A session for the first cruise passengers sailing to Carnival's Celebration Key, Carnival President Christine Duffy didn't shy away from addressing the elephant in the room. Duffy is on board Carnival Vista this week as the cruise ship makes the inaugural call to Celebration Key, the cruise line's new resort destination on Grand Bahama. As she geared up to participate in events and festivities during the special sailing, Duffy obviously prepared herself to take some heat from passengers who have concerns about the cruise line's upcoming loyalty program this summer, the new Carnival Rewards loyalty program rolls out in June 2026 and is a complete departure from the way cruise line loyalty programs have traditionally worked. Instead of earning status solely based on their days spent at sea, Carnival passengers will rack up points for their spending under Carnival Rewards. The program also eliminates lifetime loyalty status benefits — a move that's upset many cruise passengers. Why is the cruise line making these controversial changes? Carnival's top brass is now speaking publicly about the cruise line's sweeping overhaul of its VIFP program. This week aboard Carnival Vista, President Christine Duffy and Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed guests directly in the ship's main starting next June, Carnival Rewards will replace the current VIFP program, which shifts to a spending-based model instead. Everyday spending will get you points on the card as well as what you purchase for Carnival. Duffy said that the cruise line's explosive growth — 65 million guests since 2012 — has made lifetime status unsustainable. She also clarified that kids under 18 will not earn rewards, but they'll sail under their parents' status and can opt in at 18. This is because there's a lot of legalities around minors and reward programs. Duffy is on board this week for the company's inaugural call to Celebration Key on Cruise Line adds mobile ordering option for coffee And Carnival is rolling out mobile coffee ordering on select ships to cut down on morning lines at the Java Blue Cafe. Yeah, through the Carnival Hub app, guests can now pre-order select espresso, iced coffee, and other drinks for pickup at designated venues. Now, the feature runs daily from 7 a.m. to 11.30 a.m., though it should be noted that if you have the Cheers drink package or the Drinks on Us beverage package, mobile app ordering is not included in that, meaning you'll have to pay out-of-pocket if you use the app to order. However, in-person ordering is still included in those packages. Carnival says the move is about convenience, and rolling it out to more ships soon. Royal Caribbean now owns Costa Maya port for Perfect Day Mexico And Royal Caribbean now officially owns the future site of Perfect Day Mexico. Yeah, the cruise line has completed its $292 million purchase of Costa Maya's port and 34 nearby properties. Construction is now set to ramp up on the new private destination, which is expected to open in the fall of 2027. The port will stay open during development and continue hosting other cruise lines, but only Royal Caribbean and Celebrity guests will have access to Perfect Day Mexico once it's cruise line stocks were mixed on Wednesday. If you are looking for simple point-based earning per dollars spent, the card is of value. Points can be converted into onboard credit to use on specialty dining, spa, or any other thrill or vacation upgrade you are looking to splurge on. But in practice, two points per dollar is fine, but no lounge access, no travel protections and currently not tied to their loyalty program, the Crown & Anchor Society in any direct Caribbean's loyalty program: Crown & Anchor Society is composed of tiers which reward cruisers with perks. Similarly, Celebrity Cruises' Captain's Club offers tier rewards to its loyal sailors. The more nights sailed the more points you earn allowing passengers to climb the tier levels, but there is currently no direct way to use the credit card to earn a higher tier. However, there is one way currently to get rewarded based off how much you spend. If you book a suite with Royal Caribbean or sail solo in a double-occupancy cabin you receive double points per night. Celebrity does something similar. The cruise line gives points per night based off the category stateroom you booked. Generally, the more you spend on your cabin (suites are typically at a higher price point), the more points you will get. Royal's mention of card changes, which hints at the expansion of benefits is worth watching because of the potential for changes in what you can earn. What cruisers love about the loyalty programs with Royal Caribbean is that currently points and tier levels never expire. The timing of the changes of Royal's credit card is interesting given Carnival Cruise Line's recent shake up of their loyalty program (including their credit card). Carnival's big move: From FunPoints to Points + Stars Carnival's new loyalty program will be spend based but will now expire after 2 years for most sailors. This is why the new program is controversial; however, there will be more ways to earn rewards. Highlights from Carnival's new program set to begin June 1, 2026. Earn 3 Reward Pointsand3 Status Stars per $1 spent on eligible cruise fares, spa, excursions, onboard dining. Casino play is also rewarded. For every 1 casino point you earn you will be rewarded 1 Carnival Rewards point. Points are your cruise‑currency—you can spend them on drinks, excursions, internet, spa, and future cruises. Stars determine your tier—Red, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond—in a rolling two‑year cycle (except Diamond members get a six‑year grace period)In short, Carnival is building an ecosystem: spend everywhere, earn stars and points, level up status and perks.
