Waves of patriotism: Old Glory Boat Parade returns to Newport Harbor
Freedom-Family-Fun was the theme this year of the Old Glory Boat Parade that began at the east end of Lido Island and then circumnavigated Newport Harbor on July 4. The annual parade sponsored by the American Legion Yacht Club Post 291 has been a Newport Beach Independence Day tradition for close to 70 years. With 48 registered vessels of all sizes, from yachts to Duffy boats all decked out in red, white and blue, the participants set out at 1 p.m. for a leisurely cruise led by a harbor patrol boat sounding its horn. The coastal celebration lasted until 3:30 p.m. Leading the parade of decorated boats was the ALYC club boat Valor carrying the grand marshal, Newport Beach Mayor Joe Stapleton. It was followed by boats carrying active duty service members and veterans including the Malika, a large catamaran. A small electric boat featuring a giant blow-up hot dog on the roof was so fully adorned with so many beach themed water toys and palm trees one had to look twice to even see that there was a boat in there somewhere. The harbor was a busy place with non-parade boaters navigating the waters in and around the parade route. Participants in the parade were competing in categories such as Best Decorated, Finest Costumes, Most Creative and the Commodore's Award. Winners be announced at an awards banquet set for July 20.

Marcos leads inauguration of valor clinic in Batangas
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Friday led the inauguration of the Valor Access to Lifetime Optimized Health Care Program (Valor) Clinic in Lipa, Batangas. The said facility is situated in the Fernando Air Base. Marcos visited the area together with Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. The Valor Clinic is a project initiated by the Veterans Memorial Medical Center to extend its services to the different areas across the country, including those outside the National Capital Region. Through this initiative, more veterans and the dependents will be able to avail the medical services that they deserve. This will also decongest the number of patients being seen in their main hospital. The medical facility will provide out-patient based services manned by the personnel and staff of the VMMC. It will offer basic consultation, diagnostic examinations, as well as pharmacy services. The facility features patient waiting area, outpatient consultation rooms, pharmacy unit, blood extraction area, staff pantry and support area, and dedicated teleconsultation facility. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Fort Hood Is Back, Thanks To Secretary Hegseth
In a surprise announcement, the U.S. Army revealed that Fort Cavazos will once again be called Fort Hood — this time honoring a different Hood entirely. The news broke on June 16 via a series of social media posts from the official U.S. Army Fort Hood X account. The announcement detailed that official orders for the name change have been received and are now being implemented, with an official renaming ceremony scheduled for a later date. 'The installation is currently updating the online presence, including Facebook and the website, and will update physical signage and materials at a later date,' the post continued. Col. Robert B. Hood was recognized for his valor near Thiaucourt, France, where he coordinated artillery fire while under heavy machine-gun fire and shelling. When his crew was lost, Hood reorganized the unit under fire and restored combat readiness within minutes. The Army directed further questions to its Public Affairs Media Press Desk and shared a link to its official announcement, which includes redesignation plans for six other installations. 'The U.S. Army will take all necessary actions to change the names of seven Army installations in honor of heroic Soldiers who served in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Battle of Mogadishu,' the Army press release stated. In addition to Fort Hood, installations that will be renamed include Fort Pickett (formerly Fort Barfoot), Fort Gordon (formerly Fort Eisenhower), and Fort Rucker (formerly Fort Novosel), among others. The name 'Fort Hood' was originally associated with Confederate General John Bell Hood. In 2021, a Democrat-led Congress mandated the removal of Confederate names from U.S. military bases. Fort Hood was subsequently renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 after Gen. Richard Cavazos, the Army's first Hispanic four-star general. However, political tides shifted following the appointment of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Earlier this year, Hegseth used a similar legal workaround to restore Fort Bragg's name, re-dedicating it to WWII hero Pvt. Roland L. Bragg. The Dallas Express previously reported that similar methods could be used to restore the Fort Hood name without violating federal law. A search of military honors databases revealed several non-Confederate Hoods with distinguished service records, including Col. Robert B. Hood. The move appears to satisfy supporters of traditional military base names while complying with legal mandates to avoid Confederate associations. The Army presser emphasized that the redesignations are being made in line with Section 1749(a) of the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean are making major cruise ship upgrades
Although cruise lines put a lot of careful thought and attention into ship design, they don't always get everything right. Sometimes, cruise ship features miss the mark, or designers fail to recognize something that was important to passengers. Occasionally, they even overlook something that passengers say has a negative impact on the cruise experience. Related: Royal Caribbean passengers demand key onboard change Passenger preferences and needs change over time, too, so certain features eventually become outdated as new innovations are developed that enhance the cruise experience. Luckily, the fact that there's limited space on a cruise ship doesn't mean onboard areas like the pool deck, restaurants, bars, and casinos, can't be redesigned at some point. Even spaces that can't be fully reworked, like staterooms, can be refreshed to add some enhancements. When cruise ships go to dry dock for routine maintenance every few years, they often receive significant refurbishment throughout to overhaul existing venues and make improvements that will elevate passengers' future sailings on the ship. Sometimes when a need arises, cruise lines will even make upgrades to a ship without taking it out of service for dry dock. That's something Royal Caribbean is currently doing to fix a big casino problem on some of its newer and most-popular ships. Doug Parker shared more on the upgrades rolling out on board certain Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise ships, plus details on the largest ultra-luxury cruise ship suite yet, on the June 12th edition of Cruise News Today.
