Devotees question fee collection for immersing ashes in Periyar
The decision to impose a fee of Rs 50 is being questioned by devotees.
Fee system came into effect on July 1. On average, around 50 people from various parts of the state arrive at Manappuram daily to perform this ritual, whereas the number increases on religiously important days. Devotees have started questioning TDB for imposing a fee for immersing ashes in a river that falls under the jurisdiction of irrigation department.
At the same time, people's representatives feign ignorance about TDB decision.
"We heard it from news reports. We don't have any other details. Moreover, the issue doesn't come under the purview of Aluva municipality," a municipal councillor said.
It is learnt that TDB has set up a counter at the site to collect fee using temporary staff. Though TOI tried to contact temple administrative officer over phone, the official didn't respond.
According to devotees, TDB takes responsibility for cleaning bathing ghats and riverbanks during major events such as Shivaratri and Karkidaka Vavu, but riverbanks remain dirty with garbage on normal days.

High admissions, five sets of twins bring double delight to Sullia school
Mangaluru: The Government High School, Yenmoor, in Murulya village, Sullia, is now home to five pairs of twins, four in class eight and one in Class 10, creating an unusual and delightful sight of identical faces and shared milestones in the school. Yenmoor is not just any village; it holds cultural significance in Tulunadu as the place where the legendary twin heroes, Koti and Chennaya, are believed to have died in combat. Their 'Adi Garadi' still stands there, adding a historical layer to the school's unique twin story. The headmaster credits the surge in admissions to the school's active promotion of science and tech-based learning. "Last year, we hosted a science mela that drew nearly 100 students from nearby areas. Every classroom is now a smart class, equipped with projectors and digital tools. Last year we had 53 admissions; this year it rose to 90, possibly the highest among govt and private schools in the area," he said. Total strength of the school is 230 students. It places strong emphasis on extracurricular activities, including sports, culture, and overall development of the school. Students have even participated in state-level events and won awards, other than winning district-level prizes. The faculty too have been winning prizes in various events. Amid this, the school is in need of more development, including better playground and a toilet block.

Over 5,500 stray cattle rescued in five months, shifted to Hingoniya
Jaipur: In a significant animal welfare push, Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Greater (JMC-G) rescued and relocated over 5,500 stray cattle from city roads to the Hingonia Gaushala over the past five months. In addition, more than 1,000 injured or sick cattle were transported and admitted for treatment through the corporation's dedicated animal ambulance service. To review preparations ahead of the monsoon, JMC-G commissioner Gaurav Saini conducted a surprise inspection of Hingoniya Gaushala Tuesday. Saini said, "During the monsoon season, ensuring proper fodder supply, drainage, and medical facilities becomes even more critical. The safety and well-being of cattle is our top priority." He closely inspected the condition of the gaushala, checking cleanliness, cattle health, fodder availability, and on-site medical arrangements. Saini also visited the nearby Nandishala and the multi-purpose veterinary hospital, where he reviewed the care and treatment of native cattle housed there. Licensed vendors have been issued permits, generating Rs 3.5 lakh in revenue, while the online dog registration system brought in an additional Rs 66,300. Officials from JMC-G said that all departments have been put on alert mode ahead of the rainy season. "We are operating in mission mode to ensure all cattle welfare systems remain active and responsive during the monsoon," said a senior official.

Kochi corporation moots increase in remuneration for dog catchers
Kochi: Finance standing committee of Kochi corporation has recommended increasing the remuneration for dog catchers at its animal birth control (ABC) centre at Brahmapuram. Currently, dog catchers receive a payment of Rs 20,000 per month without any additional financial benefits. Due to the meagre remuneration, many individuals who cleared the interview for dog catchers' post are not joining the centre, corporation officials said. "Even while the stray dog menace is worsening, the corporation is unable to appoint more dog catchers. It is a dangerous, difficult and low-profile job. Even the guest workers deployed for menial jobs are getting more wages, while the dog catchers get less than Rs 700 a day. That is why we decided to suggest increasing the remuneration," said finance standing committee member M G Aristotle. "We have recommended discussing the suggestion at the next council meeting," he added. Currently, there are only four dog catchers at the ABC centre in Brahmapuram. This affects the pace of vaccination and sterilisation. Licence for paying guest facilities: The meeting held on Monday, also suggested a 'special residence tag' for paying guest facilities in the city. "With the increased inflow of students and job aspirants from other districts to Kochi, hundreds of paying guest facilities are mushrooming in the city. Unfortunately, none of them have a licence. There is a provision for giving the corporation's licence for homestays, but in the case of paying guest facilities, there isn't any such provision. However, there is a provision in the building rules with which a 'special residence' licence to paying guest facilities can be provided," Aristotle said.
