Vijayawada: The ongoing crisis in the tobacco auction market has led the state govt to ban the cultivation of black burley tobacco for the next crop season. With traders not offering any solace, the govt swung into action and purchased stocks from growers through the market intervention scheme (MIS).
However, tobacco farmers are said to be unhappy with the slow pace of purchases at the centres set up in agriculture market yards. Taking the surplus stocks situation into account, the govt has decided to ban cultivation for the next season.
Bapatla collector JV Murali asked farmers not to cultivate black burley tobacco next season and switch to other crops. Murali also reviewed the progress of tobacco purchases with officials and asked them to expedite the procurement process.
"We will take action against farmers if they cultivate black burley. We will not hesitate to destroy the crop. The surplus production by farmers led to price drop and crisis in the market.
We urge farmers to cooperate with the govt and cultivate alternative crops instead of black burley," said Murali, adding that farmers are free to sell existing stocks to private companies.
To protect stocks from the rains, the govt asked farmers not to bring tobacco bales with more than 20% moisture to purchase centres.
The govt has so far procured around 2,842 metric tonnes of tobacco against the target of 14,800 metric tonnes. Over 13,000 farmers from 105 villages in Bapatla district are still waiting to dispose of their stocks.
The govt also constituted village level committees to oversee the ongoing purchase of tobacco at market yards. Senior officials, including joint collectors and RDOs, have been directed to closely monitor the purchases. However, farmers are worried that it may take two-three months to dispose of the entire stock if the slow pace of purchases continues. They are also worried that tobacco leaves may get damaged in the next two months.

Take measures to ensure farmers derive benefit from ‘Annadata Sukhibhava': Collector

Nandyal: District Collector G Rajakumari has directed revenue and agriculture officials to take immediate steps to reactivate the inactive NPCI-linked bank accounts of farmers to ensure they receive benefits under the Annadatha Sukhibhava scheme. Addressing officials during a teleconference from the Collector's camp office on Wednesday, she emphasised the urgency of completing pending e-KYC and NPCI mapping to prevent eligible farmers from missing out on the scheme's financial support scheduled to be disbursed across the state on August 2. The Collector noted that out of approximately 2.07 lakh farmers in the district, 1.97 lakh have already completed e-KYC and NPCI account mapping. She instructed officials to expedite the remaining verifications for the remaining beneficiaries. Around 2,463 farmers still have pending e-KYC, while nearly 6,000 farmers' NPCI accounts remain inactive or unmapped. Officials were directed to coordinate with local bankers to map Aadhaar and mobile numbers to the respective bank accounts and ensure NPCI portal integration is completed at the earliest, particularly in mandals such as Kolimigundla, Midthur, Panyam, Allagadda, and others with higher pendency rates. Highlighting fertiliser availability, the Collector assured that the district has an adequate stock of urea. Currently, 700 metric tonnes are in storage, with an additional 1,300 metric tonnes on the way. She urged farmers to use urea judiciously and encouraged the adoption of nano urea, which is said to be equivalent to half a bottle per one bag of conventional urea. Officials were instructed to raise awareness among farmers and promote nano urea as a sustainable alternative. Further, she emphasised the need to swiftly resolve any pending applications related to the Annadatha Sukhibhava scheme and instructed that all urea distributions be mandatorily recorded in the e-POS system. She also directed departments to ensure that tenant farmers receive their CCR (Crop Cultivator Rights) cards promptly to facilitate access to various government benefits. The teleconference was attended by JC C Vishnu Charan, RDOs, tahsildars, agriculture and allied department officials, Markfed representatives, LDM, and other mandal-level officers.

Make Nandyal dist a model for green energy: Collector

Nandyal: District Collector G Rajakumari has emphasised the importance of utilising the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to transform Nandyal district into a model for green energy. Speaking via video-conference from the Collectorate on Tuesday, she addressed Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs), municipal commissioners, tahsildars, MPDOs and APMs, urging them to take proactive steps in promoting rooftop solar adoption across the district. The Collector highlighted that the PM Surya Ghar scheme not only reduces pollution but also contributes to household income and builds a healthier society. Once installed, rooftop solar panels can provide uninterrupted electricity for up to 25 years. In case of surplus power generation, residents can sell the excess to the government, eliminating concerns over power outages. She further noted the added benefits, such as supporting electric vehicle charging infrastructure at the household level. Rajakumari called for every village in the district to be developed as a 'Model Solar Village.' Officials were instructed to involve public representatives such as MPTCs and ZPTCs and conduct awareness campaigns to encourage rooftop solar panel installation in every household. She stressed the need for close collaboration with banks to ensure the scheme's smooth implementation. A target of 10,000 installations per constituency has been set, totaling 70,000 installations across the seven constituencies in Nandyal district. Under the scheme, subsidies of Rs 30,000 for 1kW, Rs 60,000 for 2kW, and Rs 78,000 for 3kW systems are being offered, with 100% subsidy for SC and ST beneficiaries. The Collector urged all eligible citizens to avail themselves of this beneficial scheme and join hands in making Nandyal a solar-powered model district in India.
