'No brainer' as Dorrington returns to Dons on loan

Yahoo19-07-2025
Alfie Dorrington has returned to Aberdeen on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the 2025-26 season.
Dorrington, 20, initially arrived at Pittodrie in January and helped the Dons win the Scottish Cup.
His 23rd Aberdeen appearance of the season was a starting place in the final against Celtic, his own goal giving the holders the lead before Jimmy Thelin's side prevailed on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
"I had six months here last season, and it was the best six months of my footballing life; winning the cup, playing lots of games, gaining new experiences," said Dorrington.
"As soon as I heard Aberdeen had come back in for me it was a no brainer, I just wanted to meet the team straight away."
Dorrington added he is looking forward to playing in front of Aberdeen supporters again, "especially on European nights".
Thelin's side enter the Europa League at the play-off stage and start their season with a trip to face Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on 4 August.
"He played an important part in the squad in the second half of the season and with the campaign ahead we will need strength in depth to be competitive across all competitions," said manager Thelin.
"Alfie settled well and made a real contribution so it's always pleasing when a player shows a strong desire to be at the club.
"He recognised this is a good opportunity for him to be playing his football at a high level and in a good environment where he can continue to develop."

'Lawal looked like Beckham'

Stoke City manager Mark Robins said Bosun Lawal could feature in a number of positions during the upcoming Championship campaign after an injury-hit debut season with the side. The Irishman joined the Potters in August 2024 but was sidelined for much of the season with a back injury, playing just seven Championship games. But the versatile Lawal, who can play in defence or midfield, is keen to make a bigger impact this campaign and his performances in pre-season are certainly catching the eye of his boss. "There's bits and pieces where [Lawal] looks fantastic at times," Robins told BBC Radio Stoke following the 1-1 friendly draw with Premier League side Wolves on Saturday. "His feet are brilliant. He looked like [David] Beckham, coming out with the ball as well. "He can play anywhere with the feet that he's got. They are quite soft and he's got a really good touch. He can finish, as you saw on Wednesday evening [when he scored in the 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra]. "He's worked his socks off this pre-season and gives himself every chance. His build and his qualities make him a welcome addition to the squad." Listen to the full post-match interview with Mark Robins and more on BBC Sounds.

Wales defender Woodham signs for Liverpool

Wales defender Lily Woodham has joined Liverpool following her departure from Seattle Reign. Woodham, who started all Wales' games at Euro 2025, left Reign over the weekend having joined the National Women's Soccer League club in 2024. The 24-year-old left-back spent most of the 2024-25 season on loan at Crystal Palace, making 20 appearances in the Women's Super League. Woodham returns to the English top flight on a permanent basis after joining a Reds side who finished seventh last season. "I'm a fan of Liverpool so it's a dream come true really," Woodham told the Merseyside club's website. "I'm really excited to meet everyone. It already feels like a home from home and everyone has been so nice to me and welcomed me. "I just want to bring everything I can to the team and always give my all in games and training." Woodham, who is Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer, joins fellow Wales internationals Gemma Evans and Ceri Holland at the Merseyside club. The length of Woodham's contract has not been specified. She moved to America after six years at Reading, while she has also played for Bristol City and Charlton Athletic. Hoffenheim target Serbian right back Ognjen Mimović

Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reports that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are targeting Serbian right back Ognjen Mimović of Fenerbahçe Istanbul. The Turkish journalist already correctly predicted a transfer move involving the Bundesliga club this summer when reporting on a loan out for defender Attila Szalai. Sabuncuoğlu claims that the Sinsheimers have submitted a formal offer for the 20-year-old. Hoffenehim possess an exigent need at the right back position. Valentin Gendrey was meant to fill the slot made vacant by Pavel Kaderabek's departure this summer, but the Frenchman recently succumbed to a serious injury and looks to be out long-term. Mimović only just moved to Fenerbahçe during the January 2025 transfer window on a €6.7m deal from Red Star Belgrade. He was then immediately loaned out to Zenit St. Petersburg. The now twice-capped Serbian international has generated plenty of interests from other clubs. Sabuncuoğlu reports that Antalyaspor are also interested in Mimović. The player himself – having not yet even made an appearance for his new parent club – will obviously wish to take his time making a decision on his future. At present, Mimović maintains an estimated market value of €3.5m. GGFN |
