International success Zap Circus sells out A Circus Sensation in Narrogin on regional WA tour

West Australian13-05-2025
For one night only, the internationally successful Zap Circus wowed the southern Wheatbelt with a mix of acrobats, fire stunts, comedy and a chance for audience members to take to the stage.
With 170 in the crowd and about 90 more on the waitlist, a seat for the WA-based circus' latest show A Circus Sensation at the Narrogin Senior High School gymnasium was in high demand on Saturday night.
Run by husband-and-wife duo Rusty Hammond and Tarrabelle Murphy, the pair have performed in more than 30 countries and received 11 awards for their act since 2015.
Murphy said the Narrogin show 'was an unforgettable evening'.
'The Narrogin performance was incredible,' she said.
'The evening was electric with the energy of a sold-out audience, turning the school gymnasium into a theatre for the night with impressive stunts, hilarious comedy and even an opportunity for audience members to take the stage.
'It is fantastic to see such demand for the show in the community.
'We are thrilled that so many people had the opportunity to enjoy the evening and we look forward to working with Arts Narrogin and the surrounding shires to bring the show back again.
'We hope that by bringing our shows to regional communities we can provide joy, happiness, long lasting memories and connection through shared experiences.'
Narrogin Senior High School students got a taste of performing during a trick workshop led by Hammond and Murphy.
'The workshop was a great addition to the performance, allowing the high school students to try their hand at the art of circus,' Murphy said.
'Students learnt new skills and had the opportunity to have a go at something out of the ordinary.'
Zap Circus is touring regional WA, stopping in Mt Barker, Narrogin, Karratha, Mandurah, Manjimup, York, Harvey and Lake Grace.

Beauty and the Beast star on playing Hugh Jackman's role

A Beauty and the Beast musical star says he is honoured to play the role of Gaston, a character brought to life by a young Hugh Jackman in the original Australian production. Jackson Head and the rest of the stellar cast, including Perth's Shubshri Kandiah as Belle, took to the Crown Theatre stage on Thursday night for the musical's debut WA performance. The Brisbane actor channels his inner villain as Gaston, an arrogant and ruthless hunter whose unrequited feelings for Belle make him want to kill the Beast once he learns she loves him instead. It was the role a young Hugh Jackman played in the original show, which opened in 1995 and also starred Rachael Beck, Michael Cormick and the late Bert Newton. 'WA's own (acting product), very cool, great to be on the hallowed turf of Hugh Jackman. 'Gaston is a really cool role and lots of fun, the Gaston-Le Fou dynamic as well is really fun to play with, The charming and charismatic but ultimately dark character has his sidekick, Le Fou, played by Adam Di Martino, with him at all times. Di Martino, who has also starred in the Aladdin musical, said as Gaston's buddy, he was there to 'make sure he's feeling great all the time'. 'It's a pretty fun job because Jackson's a pretty good guy himself, so it's not too bad,' he said. Head responded with: 'I get the privilege of being supported every night.' There are a total of 300 costumes and 119 wigs in the show. It's taken a huge team to bring the musical over to Perth from Adelaide with 23 trucks needed to transport the set and a team of 70 spending 15,000 hours to load it all up. After a national tour enchanting more than 1.2 million Aussies in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide, Perth is the final stop and last opportunity to see the show in Australia. After the Perth season wraps up, the musical will head to Singapore in December.

Banksy work removed from Venetian palazzo for repair

Art restorers have removed a deteriorating piece of graffiti by street artist Banksy titled The Migrant Child from a building overlooking a Venetian canal to preserve the work. The removal from the wall of Palazzo San Pantalon was carried out in consultation with people close to the secretive British street artist, according to the Venice-based bank Banca Ifis' art program that promotes art and culture. The artwork depicting a shipwrecked child holding a pink smoke bomb and wearing a lifejacket appeared along Rio di San Pantalon in Venice in May 2019, and was acknowledged by Banksy. Marked on online maps, it has become a tourist destination. But six years of neglect had led to the deterioration of about a third of the work, the bank said. The restoration is being overseen by Federico Borgogni, who previously removed dust and cleaned the surface before detaching a section of the palazzo's facade, Banca Ifis said in a statement. The bank is financing the project, but didn't release the cost of the operation. The bank intends to display the work to the public as part of free cultural events organised by Ifis art once restoration is completed.
