Stories of Resilience: Ngaluk Waangkiny Regional Tour, Us Talking, comes to Arts Narrogin for NAIDOC Week

A group of Indigenous elders share their story of resilience in the face of racial adversity through a powerful month-long exhibition to make for a special NAIDOC Week in Narrogin. Arts Narrogin presents the multimedia exhibition Ngaluk Waangkiny, translating to Us Talking, from June 26 to July 31 depicting the life journeys of 10 Indigenous elders through photography, recorded oral histories and a short documentary. Elders Uncle Ben Taylor Cuiermara, Aunty Theresa Walley, Uncle Farley Garlett, Aunty Doolann Leisha Eatts, Uncle Walter Eatts, Aunty Irene and Uncle Albert McNamara, Aunty Muriel Bowie, Aunty Margaret Culbong and Uncle Noel Nannup utilise the different forms of media to explore identity, connection and resilience. Mr Nannup said he always takes the opportunity to teach young people about the importance of family history. 'You have your old people at home and they are your library. Go and talk to them and find out as much as you can about your family line and hang onto that,' he said. Mr Garlett said, 'when I was growing up, I had to learn all about white fellas, their culture and history. But what do you know about me?' Ms Culbong said 'racism doesn't change overnight, but it takes action, and you've got to do it, because we've been here for 60,000 years and we'll be here for 60,000 more.' Developed by Community Arts Network and touring with Art on the Move, the exhibition acts as a reminder legacy is not always inherited, but actively built, highlighting the elders triumphs, battle for human rights, respect and recognition. Shire of Narrogin president Leigh Ballard said the shire was proud to support Ngaluk Waangkiny and honour 'voices, histories and lived experiences of elders from Boorloo'. 'These powerful stories of resilience, advocacy and cultural strength are deeply moving and offer an opportunity for reflection, learning and connection,' Cr Ballard said. 'As we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week, this exhibition brings to life the 2025 theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy by recognising the profound influence of elders and the legacy they continue to build.'

International success Zap Circus sells out A Circus Sensation in Narrogin on regional WA tour

For one night only, the internationally successful Zap Circus wowed the southern Wheatbelt with a mix of acrobats, fire stunts, comedy and a chance for audience members to take to the stage. With 170 in the crowd and about 90 more on the waitlist, a seat for the WA-based circus' latest show A Circus Sensation at the Narrogin Senior High School gymnasium was in high demand on Saturday night. Run by husband-and-wife duo Rusty Hammond and Tarrabelle Murphy, the pair have performed in more than 30 countries and received 11 awards for their act since 2015. Murphy said the Narrogin show 'was an unforgettable evening'. 'The Narrogin performance was incredible,' she said. 'The evening was electric with the energy of a sold-out audience, turning the school gymnasium into a theatre for the night with impressive stunts, hilarious comedy and even an opportunity for audience members to take the stage. 'It is fantastic to see such demand for the show in the community. 'We are thrilled that so many people had the opportunity to enjoy the evening and we look forward to working with Arts Narrogin and the surrounding shires to bring the show back again. 'We hope that by bringing our shows to regional communities we can provide joy, happiness, long lasting memories and connection through shared experiences.' Narrogin Senior High School students got a taste of performing during a trick workshop led by Hammond and Murphy. 'The workshop was a great addition to the performance, allowing the high school students to try their hand at the art of circus,' Murphy said. 'Students learnt new skills and had the opportunity to have a go at something out of the ordinary.' Zap Circus is touring regional WA, stopping in Mt Barker, Narrogin, Karratha, Mandurah, Manjimup, York, Harvey and Lake Grace.
