Kanthapuram's efforts spark hope for nurse

Time of India20 hours ago
Kozhikode: The emergency meeting held in Yemen on Monday after Sunni leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar's last-minute effort to save Keralite nurse Nimisha Priya has given a glimmer of hope.
Sources close to Kanthapuram said that efforts are on to reach a consensus within Mahdi's family and postpone the punishment until then. Priya, who is on death row at the central prison in Yemen's capital Sana'a, is scheduled to be executed on July 16.
She is on death row for the 2017 murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. Kanthapuram, who holds the title of Grand Mufti of India, reached out to prominent Yemeni Islamic scholar Sheikh Habib Omar seeking his help to urge Mahdi's family to grant pardon to Priya by accepting 'blood money'.
Omar's representative Habib Abdurrahman Ali Mashoor along with representatives of the Yemeni government, the supreme judge of Jinayat court and tribal leaders held discussions in Mahdi's native place Damar in northern Yemen. The talks are expected to continue on Tuesday. Sources said their contacts, who took part in the talks, conveyed that Monday's discussions were promising and they expect a positive decision during follow-up talks on Tuesday.

They are hopeful that Omar, who is influential in Yemen, would be able to persuade Mahdi's family and all tribal leaders. Omar, who is a respected Sufi scholar in Yemen, had visited Kanthapuram's Markazu Saquafathi Sunniyya to attend a function.
Sources said a dialogue with the victim's family became possible and the presence of various stakeholders, including tribal leaders, is seen as a positive step in the highly-sensitive Mahdi murder case among northern Yemen's tribal groups.
Meanwhile office-bearers of Nimisha Priya International Action Council thanked Kanthapuram for his intervention.
Nimisha, a native of Kollengode in Palakkad, was accused of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi with whom she had started a health clinic in Sana'a. She allegedly chopped his body and dumped the parts in a water tank. Mahdi had reportedly tortured her and illegally seized her passport which allegedly led to the murder.
A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018 and an appeals court later upheld the sentence.
The lack of formal diplomatic ties with Yemen's Houthi militants posed an issue in securing her release. While Houthi militias control Sana'a, the rest of the country is governed by the internationally recognized Saudi-backed govt and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council. The Yemeni embassy in Delhi represents the Saudi-backed govt and has no official ties with Houthis.

Why Did Israel Attack Syria And Who Are the Druze? Explained

For the past 24 hours, Israeli airstrikes have been pounding various locations in Syria. In the first wave of attacks, the Israeli Air Force targeted areas predominantly inhabited by the Druze community. In the second wave, it struck the Syrian army's headquarters in Damascus. If you follow global affairs closely, you might be wondering: Why attack Syria now — especially when Iran's influence in Syria has waned, and Hezbollah's presence has also diminished? The answer lies in Israel's long-standing relationship with the Druze community, which resides in Syria. We bring you an in-depth analysis of a major international development, with Israel once again at the center of a growing conflict. After confronting Hamas in Gaza, battling Houthi rebels in Yemen, and challenging Iran's regional influence, Israel has now opened a new front — this time in Syria. In the first part of this analysis, we'll walk you through what's happening on the ground with Israel's latest military operation in Syria. It's crucial to understand this situation carefully. Israel launched its military campaign in Syria to protect the Druze — a minority group facing extremist violence. But why is this community so important to Israel? To understand that, let's first look at what's been happening on the ground in Syria. #DNAWithRahulSinha | ईरान के बाद सीरिया..इजरायल ने बम गिराया! 'मुसलमानों' के लिए लड़ गया इजरायल इजरायल के नए 'ग्लोबल अटैक' का विश्लेषण#DNA #Israel #Muslims #Syria @RahulSinhaTV — Zee News (@ZeeNews) July 16, 2025 A large portion of Syria's Druze population lives in the border province of Sweida. For the past two weeks, a local militia has been attacking Druze villages. In response, armed Druze factions began fighting back. As tensions escalated, radical groups began receiving direct support from the Syrian government. The government-aligned militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham then opened heavy fire on Druze-populated areas — prompting Israel to intervene militarily. The Druze community — for whom Israel has opened this new battlefront — has deep historical ties to Israel. Druze people, who are of Arab origin and follow a branch of Islam, live across Israel, Syria, and Lebanon. They reject Islamic extremism and are widely respected within Israeli society. Their bond with Israel is not only social but also strategic — a relationship that deserves close attention. Back in 1948, when a coalition of Arab nations attacked the newly established State of Israel, the Druze living in northern Israel sided with Israeli forces. By 1956, Israel began formally recruiting Druze Muslims into its military. Since then, many Druze soldiers have gone on to lead major brigades, and during the recent Gaza war, 12 Druze soldiers lost their lives fighting for Israel. Because of their significant contributions to Israeli society and defence, Israel did not hesitate to open a new military front in Syria to protect the Druze. This enduring partnership stands as a lesson for those who prioritize religious extremism and terrorism over national unity and peace.

‘Wife's duty to protect, not betray': Woman gets life for hubby murder

Agra: A local court in Aligarh has sentenced a woman and her lover to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband in 2023. Additional sessions judge Nawal Kishore Singh also imposed a fine of ₹3.2 lakh on each of the convicts, said additional district govt counsel (ADGC) Swarnlata Verma on Wednesday. A case was registered on Oct 20, 2023, based on a complaint filed by the victim's father, Murari Lal Varshney. He mentioned that his son, Bhuvnesh Kumar alias Bhikki (30), a trader and resident of Brahmanpuri locality in Aligarh's Kauriyaganj, had gone out the previous day with his friend Ankit (now 30), who was later revealed to be his wife's lover. Bhuvnesh's body was recovered the next morning from a wood yard. Police investigation revealed that the murder was premeditated. Ankit, an electrician, was a frequent visitor to the couple's home and had developed an illicit relationship with Bhuvnesh's wife, Nandini (now 27). When Bhuvnesh discovered the affair and objected, the duo conspired to eliminate him. On the night of Oct 19, the two strangled Bhuvnesh and dumped his body. A case was registered under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) at Akrabad police station. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Both accused were arrested and later charge-sheeted. The court relied on witness testimonies and forensic evidence to convict them. In its order, the court observed on Tuesday, "Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances and materials on record, it is clear that the duo committed murder. It was the duty of Nandini to support her husband; however, she and Ankit conspired and murdered Bhuvnesh, which shows extreme brutality."

FIR against kanwariyas for beating woman on scooty

Haridwar: An FIR was registered on Wednesday against unidentified kanwariyas after a video surfaced showing a group of pilgrims, including a woman, assaulting a local woman in Haridwar. The incident took place on Sunday night after the victim's scooty purportedly grazed past a kanwar (pot) while she was returning home with a friend. The video shows seven-eight kanwariyas verbally abusing the victim (whose face was not visible), pulling her hair and beating her. Initially, police claimed they were not aware about the incident as no formal complaint was filed. However, after public outrage on social media, senior sub-inspector Ramesh Saini of Kankhal police station registered an FIR under BNS sections 191 (rioting), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). While police said the victim remains unidentified, TOI spoke to the 40-year-old woman, who confirmed the incident took place near Rishikul trijunction in Haridwar. However, she has chosen not to file a complaint. SHO Chandra Mohan said, "We took suo motu action after the video went viral. Our team is trying to identify both the woman and the accused kanwariyas for further action." Meanwhile, police have so far registered seven cases against kanwariyas for rioting and assault across Kankhal, Bahadrabad, Roorkee and Manglaur police station areas, leading to eight arrests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Clashes between police and kanwariyas have been reported at several places in the city and rural areas over route disagreements. SP (city) Pankaj Gairola said, "We're urging kanwariyas to take the canal route, where all basic amenities are available and their safety is ensured. However, some are adamant on using the highway. In such cases, police have had to intervene. Most of the pilgrims are following the designated route."
