Kanthapuram's efforts spark hope for nurse
Sources close to Kanthapuram said that efforts are on to reach a consensus within Mahdi's family and postpone the punishment until then. Priya, who is on death row at the central prison in Yemen's capital Sana'a, is scheduled to be executed on July 16.
She is on death row for the 2017 murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. Kanthapuram, who holds the title of Grand Mufti of India, reached out to prominent Yemeni Islamic scholar Sheikh Habib Omar seeking his help to urge Mahdi's family to grant pardon to Priya by accepting 'blood money'.
Omar's representative Habib Abdurrahman Ali Mashoor along with representatives of the Yemeni government, the supreme judge of Jinayat court and tribal leaders held discussions in Mahdi's native place Damar in northern Yemen. The talks are expected to continue on Tuesday. Sources said their contacts, who took part in the talks, conveyed that Monday's discussions were promising and they expect a positive decision during follow-up talks on Tuesday.

They are hopeful that Omar, who is influential in Yemen, would be able to persuade Mahdi's family and all tribal leaders. Omar, who is a respected Sufi scholar in Yemen, had visited Kanthapuram's Markazu Saquafathi Sunniyya to attend a function.
Sources said a dialogue with the victim's family became possible and the presence of various stakeholders, including tribal leaders, is seen as a positive step in the highly-sensitive Mahdi murder case among northern Yemen's tribal groups.
Meanwhile office-bearers of Nimisha Priya International Action Council thanked Kanthapuram for his intervention.
Nimisha, a native of Kollengode in Palakkad, was accused of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi with whom she had started a health clinic in Sana'a. She allegedly chopped his body and dumped the parts in a water tank. Mahdi had reportedly tortured her and illegally seized her passport which allegedly led to the murder.
A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018 and an appeals court later upheld the sentence.
The lack of formal diplomatic ties with Yemen's Houthi militants posed an issue in securing her release. While Houthi militias control Sana'a, the rest of the country is governed by the internationally recognized Saudi-backed govt and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council. The Yemeni embassy in Delhi represents the Saudi-backed govt and has no official ties with Houthis.

‘Wife's duty to protect, not betray': Woman gets life for hubby murder
Agra: A local court in Aligarh has sentenced a woman and her lover to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband in 2023. Additional sessions judge Nawal Kishore Singh also imposed a fine of ₹3.2 lakh on each of the convicts, said additional district govt counsel (ADGC) Swarnlata Verma on Wednesday. A case was registered on Oct 20, 2023, based on a complaint filed by the victim's father, Murari Lal Varshney. He mentioned that his son, Bhuvnesh Kumar alias Bhikki (30), a trader and resident of Brahmanpuri locality in Aligarh's Kauriyaganj, had gone out the previous day with his friend Ankit (now 30), who was later revealed to be his wife's lover. Bhuvnesh's body was recovered the next morning from a wood yard. Police investigation revealed that the murder was premeditated. Ankit, an electrician, was a frequent visitor to the couple's home and had developed an illicit relationship with Bhuvnesh's wife, Nandini (now 27). When Bhuvnesh discovered the affair and objected, the duo conspired to eliminate him. On the night of Oct 19, the two strangled Bhuvnesh and dumped his body. FIR against kanwariyas for beating woman on scooty
Haridwar: An FIR was registered on Wednesday against unidentified kanwariyas after a video surfaced showing a group of pilgrims, including a woman, assaulting a local woman in Haridwar. The incident took place on Sunday night after the victim's scooty purportedly grazed past a kanwar (pot) while she was returning home with a friend. The video shows seven-eight kanwariyas verbally abusing the victim (whose face was not visible), pulling her hair and beating her. Initially, police claimed they were not aware about the incident as no formal complaint was filed. However, after public outrage on social media, senior sub-inspector Ramesh Saini of Kankhal police station registered an FIR under BNS sections 191 (rioting), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). While police said the victim remains unidentified, TOI spoke to the 40-year-old woman, who confirmed the incident took place near Rishikul trijunction in Haridwar. However, she has chosen not to file a complaint. SHO Chandra Mohan said, "We took suo motu action after the video went viral. Our team is trying to identify both the woman and the accused kanwariyas for further action." SP (city) Pankaj Gairola said, "We're urging kanwariyas to take the canal route, where all basic amenities are available and their safety is ensured. However, some are adamant on using the highway. In such cases, police have had to intervene. Most of the pilgrims are following the designated route."
