Awareness Program Held in Gadwal to Mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
Speaking at the event, members of the Legal Aid Defense Councils emphasized that the primary goal of observing this day is to support victims of human trafficking, protect their rights, and ensure their safety. They noted that human trafficking has now become a critical human rights issue globally.
The theme for this year is: 'Use and Abuse of Technology – Stop Trafficking, Protect Victims.' The message focuses on how technology can be leveraged to prevent trafficking and safeguard vulnerable individuals.
Highlighting the severity of the issue, the speakers said that millions of women, children, and men worldwide fall victim to trafficking through deception, coercion, and false promises. These individuals often end up being exploited in forced labor, prostitution, and other forms of abuse. In India, particularly, women and young girls are commonly trafficked under the guise of job offers or marriage proposals.
The speakers called for a unified effort by the government machinery, police departments, voluntary organizations, and social activists to strictly enforce anti-trafficking laws, identify victims, and ensure proper rehabilitation.
The program saw the participation of Legal Aid Defense Council members Mr. V. Rajender, Mr. B. Srinivasulu, Mr. D. Lakshman Swamy, representatives from the Railway Police, and various non-governmental organizations.

Andhra Pradesh DGP orders stern action against human traffickers
Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta has directed police officers to promptly book cases against human traffickers and take stringent action. Marking World Day Against Trafficking in Persons – 2025, the DGP, along with Additional DGP (Law & Order) N. Madhusudhan Reddy, IGP and Women & Child Safety Wing in-charge B. Raja Kumari, Women Protection Cell SP N. Sridevi Rao, and other officials, released awareness posters at the AP Police Headquarters on Wednesday. Mr. Gupta stressed the need to act not only against traffickers but also those abetting trafficking. He said the Women and Child Safety Wing is actively supporting victims, including providing financial assistance. Referring to recent convictions—life imprisonment in Guntur and a seven-year jail term in Kadapa—the DGP warned of severe consequences for offenders. He said Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) were operational in all 26 districts under Mahila Police Stations. Citizens are urged to report any trafficking-related information through the Sakthi App, Dial 112, or WhatsApp at 7993485111.

Firm action needed to prevent human trafficking: District Legal Services Authority Secretary
District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Secretary K. Ratna Prasada on Wednesday (July 30) described human trafficking a grave and organised global crime. He was addressing a gathering on the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. He pointed out that economic disparity, social inequality and increasing digital vulnerabilities are key factors contributing to this crime, which continues to devastate countless lives across the globe. Mr. Prasada stressed that traffickers often deceive victims, especially from marginalised communities, with false promises of jobs or marriage, only to trap them in forced labour or sexual exploitation. He called for community vigilance and warned against trusting strangers who make dubious offers. He outlined a multi-pronged approach to effectively tackle human trafficking, including strengthening coordination between police, border security and international agencies; increasing surveillance at vulnerable transit points; leveraging digital tools for anonymous reporting; conducting regular awareness drives at grassroots level and ensuring rehabilitation and legal aid for rescued victims. The seminar, jointly organised by the DLSA-Eluru and the Child Rights Advocacy Foundation at the District Court Complex, brought together judicial officers, law enforcement officials, social workers and representatives from various welfare departments.

RPF rescues over 65k trafficked and runaway children in last four years
New Delhi, July 30 (UNI) In a significant achievement, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has rescued more than 65,000 trafficked and runaway children across India in the last four and a half years, underscoring its crucial role in combating human trafficking. Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), lauded the RPF's efforts and highlighted the grave nature of human trafficking, describing it as 'one of the gravest human rights violations,' with women and girls being disproportionately affected. She emphasised the importance of early detection and timely intervention by the RPF in addressing this menace. To enhance the capabilities of RPF personnel in preventing trafficking of women and children, as well as other crimes against women, the NCW and RPF have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons today, said a statement here. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, who attended the event, shared the development on the social media platform X, marking the collaboration as a key step forward in strengthening anti-trafficking measures. The MoU was signed by Shivani Dey, Deputy Secretary of NCW, and S. Sudhakar, DIG/Projects, RPF, as per the statement. Manoj Yadava, Director General of RPF, reiterated the force's commitment to the cause. 'Indian Railways, with its vast network and reach, holds a unique position and responsibility to act as a frontline deterrent against trafficking,' he said. He added that the partnership with NCW would enhance operational response and community engagement, enabling more effective prevention and rescue efforts. The MoU facilitates the organization of structured training programs and sensitization initiatives for RPF personnel. Public awareness efforts, including the dissemination of informational materials at railway stations and on trains, will also be undertaken. Additionally, anti-human trafficking units (AHTUs), already operational at over 750 locations, will be leveraged to strengthen surveillance and ensure immediate response to suspected cases, said the statement.
