Oscar Piastri flips script on first racing lap to win famous Belgian Grand Prix after rain delay
Heading home McLaren teammate Norris, who had started on pole, means Australian driver Piastri's lead has jumped from nine to 16 points.
It also halted his English rival's gathering momentum — Norris had won the previous two races to slash Piastri's overall lead to single figures.
Norris, who was passed by Piastri on the first racing lap at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, said: 'Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Oscar deserved it.'
'Oscar just did a good job. Nothing more to say. Committed a bit more through Eau Rouge, and had the slipstream and got the run.
'So nothing to complain of. He did a better job in the beginning, and that was it. Nothing more I could do after that point. I would love to be up top, but Oscar deserved it today.'
The decisive moment of the afternoon came moments after the race finally got underway.
Piastri charged through the spray to slipstream Norris through the daunting Eau Rouge and scythed past on the uphill straight, with his overtaken teammate complaining of a possible battery issue.
Piastri then proceeded largely untroubled as he powered on to finish 3.415 seconds clear of his arch-rival, flipping the script from Saturday's sprint race when he started on pole but lost out to Max Verstappen.
Norris reduced Piastri's lead toward the end of Sunday's grand prix but the Australian held on with worn tires with his teammate unable to get close enough to challenge.
'I knew Lap 1 (after the safety car) would probably be my best chance of winning the race. I got a good exit out of Turn 1, lifted as little as I dared and yeah, we had it mostly under control,' Piastri said after his eighth Formula One career win and sixth of this season.
Piastri had been disappointed to qualify second for the race behind Norris, but it 'turns out starting second at Spa is not so bad after all'.
The world title initiative has suddenly swung back to Piastri, who heads to Hungary for next Sunday's grand prix having won his first race in Budapest last season.
Norris added: 'I'll review my things but still happy for the team, another 1-2 and our first 1-2 here for many, many years.'
The race had been red-flagged after an initial formation lap due to standing water and heavy spray affecting visibility.
That resulted in a delay of an hour and 20 minutes as officials waited for conditions at the notoriously weather-prone circuit to improve.
Charles Leclerc was a distant third for Ferrari as dominant champions McLaren celebrated their sixth one-two finish in 13 races and the third in a row.
Titleholder Max Verstappen, in his first full race under a new Red Bull chief following the departure of Christian Horner, finished fourth.
George Russell, of Mercedes, who crossed the line first in Spa last year but was disqualified due to his car being underweight, was fifth this time and Williams' Alex Albon came home sixth.

Gout Gout's 100m personal best crushed by 16-year-old Japanese athlete Sorato Shimizu
Australian sprinting sensation Gout Gout has been upstaged by a 16-year-old from Japan. Sorato Shimizu has sent a warning shot to both Gout and the world after running a blinding 10.00 flat 100m sprint at a meet in Hiroshima, Japan on Saturday. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Teenage sensation betters Gout Gout in blazing 100m run. The teenager, who is 14 months younger than Gout, smashed the Aussie prodigy's personal best time of 10.17. Ominously, he is also now quicker than Usain Bolt at the same age. The Jamaican Olympic legend had not recorded anything faster than Shimizu's 10-flat at any stage until after he turned 20. Shimizu's run set a new 100m under-18 world record, which was previously held by both American Christian Miller and Thailand's Puripol Boonson, who had ran 10.06 seconds. Miller set the mark in July 2023 before Boonson joined him just under three months later. He is also the equal fifth-fastest Japanese runner of all time in the event. Speaking after the run, a hungry Shimizu said he didn't even hit his own personal goal, but said he was happy to have broken the country's high school record, which was previously Yoshihide Kiryu's 10.01 set in 2013. 'I was determined to run under 10 seconds heading into the final,' he said. 'I'm happy to have set a high school record. I'd like to get a taste of it if I can make it.' It comes just over a month after Gout stitched together another Australian record when he won his first senior international race on foreign soil. The 17-year-old, returning to competition for the first time since April, stunned the Golden Spike Meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic in late June. Gout powered away late and crossed the line in 20.02 seconds to defeat recent Diamond League winner Reynier Mena. 'I've felt stronger in training these last couple of months and I've felt good since I got to Europe last Thursday,' Gout said at the time. 'I knew Mena would come hard at me the first 100 but I was confident I'd be close enough to come home strongly in the second part of the race which is of course my stronger part. 'I felt calm but strong as I came off the turn and was confident I'd be strong enough to get the win. 'Another national record! Pretty happy with that, it's not a bad first-up in Europe!' Gout is building towards the 200m at the Tokyo world championships in September, and recently confirmed he would run for Australia at next year's Commonwealth Games in Scotland. The major competition will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 next year and be broadcast exclusively live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport. Gout has taken the sprinting world by storm with his freakish talents, and next year's Games will be the biggest event of his budding career. BYD's Australian boss has taken to social media to blast claims from rival Chinese car brand Chery that accuse BYD, MG and Geely of copying its hybrid technology – calling the suggestion F*** in a fiery LinkedIn post. The outburst comes after Carsales published an article quoting Chery Australia COO Lucas Harris, who said competing Chinese brands like BYD were '100 per cent' copying the company's so-called 'Super Hybrid' powertrain technology. Harris told Carsales this during the launch of Chery's Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 hybrid SUVs. The Carsales story referenced BYD's new Shark 6 ute, MG's HS Super Hybrid, and Geely's incoming Starray EM-i Super Hybrid, all of which use similar naming conventions and drivetrain logic, with varying claims about efficiency, battery backup, and petrol-electric switching. The article and Harris's comments provoked an immediate and rare response from BYD Australia General Manager Wing You, who posted a screenshot of the article with a blunt remark. 'Emmmmm, very interesting!' he wrote on LinkedIn. 'They are very lucky by internal rules, we cannot negatively comment on other brands; however, I need to say, this GENTLEMEN's words are F***!.' 'Before the launch of the SEALION 6 plug-in hybrid SUV in mid-2024, the term 'Super Hybrid' was used in the Australian market. Anything that suggests otherwise is misleading and risks confusing consumers who deserve clear, fact-based information to support their vehicle choices,' she said. In the Carsales interview, Harris told journalist Ally Lawrence that Chery took possession of the 'Super Hybrid' name more than 12 months ago in Europe. However, trademark records confirm the name 'Super Hybrid' and 'Super Hybrid System' is active in the United Kingdom, registered to Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., but it was only lodged in April 2025, not a year prior. Chery has pending trademark applications for the term in several other jurisdictions, including Thailand, Brazil and Australia. BYD applied to trademark its DM-i hybrid system in multiple countries, including the United States, Australia and Brazil as early as December 2024 – months before Chery's UK filing and most recently in the UK in May 2025. Picture: Thomas Wielecki Harris told Carsales that Chery claimed to have possession of the 'Super Hybrid' name over 12 months ago in Europe; however, Harris admitted that BYD beat it to the Aussie market with the Shark 6 dual-cab ute. It uses a system called Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i) in the Shark 6, with the car capable of driving in EV or hybrid mode without performance loss. In comparison, Chery's version is branded CHS or SHS depending on the model, promises better driveability when unplugged, with Harris claiming rival plug-in-hybrids (PHEVs) become 'awful to drive' when battery levels dip. 'Noise goes up considerably, the power delivery and driving feeling is significantly worse; and the fuel economy is just awful,' Harris told Carsales. 'That's a big difference with our technology; you can drive it around and never, ever, ever plug it in, and you'll have no deteriorated performance at all.
